BANGKOK: Thailand's plan to build a 90km land bridge across its southern region, which could see shipping trade bypass Malaysia and Singapore, is on paper easier than the long-touted Kra Canal, although it still faces steep challenges, say analysts.

But for Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, the project is expected to attract international investors and turn Thailand into a thriving production hub.

“This will be a global mega-project, which will shorten the duration of goods transport via the channel of the Malacca Strait by six to nine days,” he said during the Thailand-China Investment Forum in Beijing on Thursday (Oct 19).

Mr Srettha also added that Thailand is ready to welcome Chinese investors to help develop the country and promised to improve the ease of doing business in the kingdom in the future.

A NEW TRADE ROUTE LINKING THE INDIAN AND PACIFIC OCEANS
The land bridge project is designed to provide a new trade route between the Indian and Pacific Oceans. It will include two deep sea ports on Thailand’s eastern and western coasts as well as a rail and road system linking them together.

With Spore port economy reducing Spore GDP, Johor, Ngri Sembilan, Melaka economic activities dependent on Spore spillovers effect will be reduced quite significantly. The land-bridge is actually a railway not a canal as planned. Eventhou it might shorten the travelling distance but the hassle of loading and unloading at two ports will not help alot. Currently, Malacca strait is jammed until cannot jam, so to have an extra two one way rail, i personally think it will not help much. That the reason China pushing for a canal instead of rail. Thailand Agua alot only, brain not much.

The completed Thailand project might spillovers, but the mentality and radicality of the northen teh tarik state put the whole things to shame. Try to hold a gun and force any SG company to start a business in northen area. You will surprise with their answers. They are backwards for a reason.
On nusantara new capital, check out their current progress. Check out the comments of some very famous international company, why they holding back their investment there. Especially with resent war and boycott issues, which international companies will set their foot there? Jokowi dont have much time left, his policies are in uncertain state as a new president will be elected. Not much investors will to take such risks.

Let's put things in perspective... Technically BV is operating without a valid mining licence. I believe BV would have applied for the licence 6 months before the expiry. In other words the application is pending. Since the application is under review by the authorities, I do not think BV mining operations is deemed illegal
