CARI was set up in 2011 to support the ASEAN economic integration agenda by way of policy research and policy advocacy.I wish to thank CIMB for their past support. In the last ten years, CARI has established itself as a thought leader and knowledge partner in ASEAN.I look forward to leading CARI to new heights in the years ahead, which will see huge sustainability issues challenging economic and political development.

GENEVA (Feb 6): Two Chinese vaccines are "in very advanced stage" of the World Health Organization (WHO) Emergency Use Listing Procedure (EUL) assessment, an official from the WHO said yesterday, the Xinhua news agency reported.

The vaccines, produced by Sinovac and Sinopharm, are among the four vaccines in very advanced phase of approval, said Mariangela Simao, the assistant WHO director-general for access to medicines, vaccines and pharmaceuticals, at a press conference.

A team of experts from the WHO are now already in China, and they "will start inspections next week" as they are currently in quarantine, she said.

This could bring an approval for the vaccine in a relatively short time frame as Sinovac and Sinopharm have completed several Phase 3 trials, as shown by a public document weekly updated on the WHO website.

Expect a dividend announcement on or before 2nd March, Its almost 12 months since last dividend was announced (2nd March 2020) and if CIMB fails to pay a dividend by the end April it will trigger a sell off by institutions that hold CIMB stock as their rules may require them to divest if the company fails to pay a divided in any year. If this happens it will be three dividend paying years before they can buy CIMB again.

We have pencilled in a dividend of 8.9 sen/share (payout: 50%) for FY20 and we expect the DPS to be lower in quantum for the financial year compared to FY19’s 26 sen/share (payout: 56%).

CIMB has the intention to divvy in upcoming results release with a FY20 payout ratio of 40-60% but it would still largely subject to board of directors and BNM’s approval.

CIMB Niaga aims to release its results on 19 Feb while the group is reporting on 26 Feb.

Malaysian banks are likely to declare dividends, albeit lower, when they release the fourth quarter financial results. The view is formed on the premise that most local banks have demonstrated their financial strength to withstand the current economic crisis.Except for Malayan Banking Bhd (Maybank), BIMB Holdings Bhd and RHB Bank Bhd, all other listed banks did not declare any interim dividends in the January-September period.

As crude oil prices rise, inflation also rises. Gold is known to be a good hedge against inflation. The value of gold only increases when inflation rises. ... Gold and crude oil are further related in that a rise in the price of oil dampens economic growth due to its excessive industrial use.
