Credit Suisse is bringing back the “First Boston” name after 17 years as the Swiss bank unveiled a sweeping restructuring that includes a big investment from Saudi Arabia, the sale of a unit, and as many as 9,000 job cuts.

The revamp was unveiled Thursday alongside a third-quarter loss of 4 billion francs ($4.1 billion), the fourth consecutive loss for the struggling bank that has reeled from the blowup of the Archegos family office and the collapse of the financing firm Greensill Capital.

Most of the loss stems from a 3.7 billion franc impairment of deferred tax assets, but it would’ve lost money even without that, as revenue dropped 30% to 3.8 billion francs, on a 58% slide in investment bank revenue in dollar terms, a 18% wealth management decline and a 9% drop from its Swiss bank.

It’s going to raise 4 billion francs through the sale of stock, a move it long resisted, with up to 1.5 billion francs coming from Saudi National Bank. It’s going to sell a majority of its assets in its securitized products group to an investor group led by Apollo Global Management and Pimco. It’s going to split off into a bad bank — what it calls a “capital release unit” — its prime services unit, emerging markets lending outside of wealth management and select European lending and capital markets activities.

Stocks of diesel and other distillate fuel oils were just 106 million barrels on Oct. 21, the lowest for the time of year since the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) started collecting weekly data in 1982.

Reflecting the intensifying fuel shortage, futures prices for ultra-low sulphur diesel (ULSD) delivered in New York Harbor in December are trading at a premium of $60 per barrel over Brent.
The twelve-month calendar spread for ultra-low sulphur diesel futures has flared out to a backwardation of $50 per barrel from less than $10 this time last year, as traders anticipate physical shortages.

Gasoil is actually diesel prestandard. Governments started a standard definition and the term diesel was used. Gasoil is the larger set. Diesel is a small subset of Gasoil with defined standards.

SHANGHAI, Oct 28 (Reuters) - China's biggest electric vehicle (EV) maker BYD said its third-quarter net profit jumped 350% from a year ago, helped by a wider range of product offerings and strong sales that saw it beat Tesla in the world's largest auto market.

BYD's net profit for the July-September quarter reached 5.72 billion yuan ($788.75 million), while that for the first nine months increased 281% to 9.31 billion yuan, the company said in a stock exchange filing on Friday.

The result was in line with a forecast the company published last week.

Having scrapped gasoline vehicles from its product mix this year, BYD has, more than any other automaker, been able to capitalise on a range of incentives for electric cars offered by China's central and local governments.

The company, which is 19% owned by Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway, has also been able to significantly reduce costs per vehicle on the back of robust sales and a broader product range than other EV competitors.

BYD's combined sales of pure electric and hybrid plug-in vehicles increased 250% in the first nine months to 1.2 million units, outpacing a 110% rise for the overall EV segment. Tesla sold just over 318,000 electric vehicles in China during the first nine months of the year.
