1Q14 net profit was below expectation, but quarterly results have tended to be volatile.

The overall thematics remain intact, but valuations are no longer compelling following the stock’s 26% YTD rally.

Maintain HOLD, TP unchanged at MYR4.60.

What’s New

TDC’s 1Q14 core net profit (excluding Digi dividends) of MYR20m (- 32% YoY, -89% QoQ) represents 16% of our full-year forecast (note that consensus forecasts include Digi dividends, and 4Q13 net profit included a sizable MYR151m tax credit). 1Q14 EBITDA of MYR43m (-12% YoY, -14% QoQ) was 20% of ours and consensus fullyear forecasts respectively.

Revenue declined sequentially (-12% QoQ), led by data (-14% QoQ), and data centre (-8% QoQ). This led to a sequential compression of EBITDA margins (-1ppt QoQ) to 32.4%. 1Q14 tax expense was also higher than expected (11% tax rate against our 5% assumption). Management will host a results call this morning.

What’s Our View

There is generally some degree of volatility in TDC’s quarterly results, as data revenue can be lumpy. Our forecasts are unchanged for now, pending further updates by management.

TDC’s share price is up 26% YTD as investors re-rate the stock on its 1) secular growth prospects and 2) capital management potential. While the overall thematics remain intact, we think valuations are no longer compelling, hence our HOLD rating.

Our MYR4.60 TP is unchanged, based on a sum-of-parts, with 1) the core business valued at MYR3.40 per TDC share based on DCF and 2) its 137.5m Digi shares valued at MYR1.20 per TDC share (based on our MYR5.00 Digi TP).

Timecom consolidating very well at this level. Once it break 4.5 level it will go to 6.0 next level. The company has a very good balance sheet. And internet in the future for the coming years.

Google will be joining forces with five East Asian companies to build a 9,000-km (6,000 mile) fiber-optic underwater cable that will span the Pacific Ocean, connecting the West Coast of the U.S. to two cities in Japan. The $300 million project aims to address the needs of rising Internet usage along the trans-Pacific route.

China Mobile International, China Telecom Global, Japanese mobile carrier KDDI, Singapore’s SingTel and Malaysia’s Global Transit — some of the largest telecom firms in Asia — will also be investing in the project that is scheduled to begin service by 2016

Malaysian communications provider Time dotCom has completed the long-planned acquisitions of Global Transit companies and AIMS Group as part of its transition to a regional wholesale service provider. Time purchased 100 percent in Global Transit Communications from Pulau Kapas Ventures for a consideration of MYR 102 million, which was settled with the issue of 28.73 million new Time shares. The company also bought 100 percent of Global Transit Limited from a number of investors for a consideration of MYR 101 million, which includes a cash payment of MYR 40.40 million and 17.07 million Time dotCom shares. The acquisition also included 100 percent in Global Transit Entities from Global Transit International and 100 percent of AIMS Group from Megawisra for MYR 119 million, which was settled with 20.11 million new Time shares and a cash payment of MYR 47.60 million. AIMS Group is a provider of carrier neutral data centre services. Global Transit Communications is a regional internet service and backhaul provider for telecommunication service providers, while Global Transit holds a 10 percent interest in the Unity Cable System. Global Transit Entities holds internet licences in Singapore and Hong Kong.

the long-term trendline while the recent
