KUCHING: Sarawak Cable Bhd’s (Sarawak Cable) revenue for the fourth quarter of 2015 (4Q15) ended Dec 2015 rose more than four times as compared to the same quarter last financial year.
The company in a filing to Bursa Malaysia said revenue for 4Q15 stood at RM422.74 million as compared to RM93.27 million in 4Q15, a substantial increase of 353 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y).
Sarawak Cable said the higher turnover was attributed to higher contribution from the sales of power and telecommunication cables.
For financial year 2015 (FY15) ended December 2015, Sarawak Cable said its revenue soared by 329 per cent y-o-y to RM1.45 billion from RM339.44 million in FY14.
The company added net profit for FY15 gained by 64 per cent y-o-y to RM39.79 million from RM24.23 million in FY14.
Additionally, Sarawak Cable explained the improved financial results was due to positive contribution from its newly acquired subsidiaries, Universal Cable (M) Bhd (UCMB) and Leader Cable Industry Bhd (LCIB).
Going forward, the company said it remains positive with the business strategies in place, there will be growth for the sales of power and telecommunication cables this year.
Correspondingly, Sarawak Cable is confident the demand for its galvanised products and steel structures will continue to improve.
Moreover, the company added it remains optimistic for its transmission lines construction segment with the group’s development plans for the power transmission industry.
With that, Sarawak Cable anticipates improved performance in FY16.

KUCHING (March 3): Sarawak targets to build 9,185 units of quality affordable homes under eight development projects by 2019.
Its Housing Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg said his ministry was cooperating with the state Housing Development Commission, Perbadanan PR1MA Malaysia (PR1MA) and local developers to build them.
Speaking at a news conference at his office here today, he said the projects were in Siol Kandis (Vista Tunku with 1,877 units), Matang (Matang 1 - 912 units and Matang 2 - 448 units), and in Semenggoh (1,260 units).
He said the other two projects here would be in Petrajaya 2 (616 units) and Bintawa (1,320 units).
"The rest will be in Sibu (1,096 units) and Sungai Plan in Bintulu (1,656 units).
"They will be sold from RM100,000 to RM300,000 per unit, depending on the type but are generally 20% lower than the market prices."
Abang Johari said there was a need to build more homes as an increasing number of people were now more keen to live in the towns and cities.
"By 2025, it is envisaged that at least 60% of the state's population will be urban and 40% rural dwellers," he said.
Abang Johari noted that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, accompanied by Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem, was expected to officiate a PR1MA housing roadshow on March 12 at the Old State Legislative Assembly Building, here.
"The roadshow will actually begin a day earlier on Friday and will be held until Sunday, 10am to 7pm," he said.
PR1MA chief executive oficer Datuk Abdul Mutalib Alias, who was present at the news conference, said it would work closely with the state government, other relevant authorities and local developers in identifying ideal sites for more PR1MA homes.
"We have so far planned to build a total of 233,380 units nationwide and of these, 75,859 units are already in the various stages of construction," he said.
Middle-income residents in the state are urged to register via the official website at www.pr1ma.my for the opportunity to own a house.
THE upcoming Sarawak state election will be interesting to watch as it is the first after the changing of guard. This will be the first state election for chief minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem who took helm in 2014 from his predecessor Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud who was in rein for 33 years.
Even before the election year, the state government has thrown in sweeteners to build or enhance infrastructure in the rural and sub-urban areas. Adenan said that about RM6bil or three quarter of the annual budget will be used for the state’s development, out of which, RM2.65bil was set aside for rural development and that is 13% higher year-on-year.
As a big chunk of the money will go to physical development, construction players and building material suppliers usually appear as the direct beneficiaries.
Other sectors like plantation may not benefit directly from the state election because their earnings are more sensitive towards the price movement of CPO and timber.

Meanwhile, prospects for oil and gas players are highly correlated to crude oil prices. This time, the number of state assembly seats has also been increased from 71 to 82. The Government has also increasingly placed more importance in the agenda of developing Sarawak.
It is evidently so when the Government announced a RM27bil allocation for the construction of the 1,663km Pan Borneo Highway during Budget 2015. And much authority to execute the project was entrusted to the state government.
Slated to be the transportation backbone of Sarawak and Sabah, the mega project is expected to generate high catalytic impact on economic growth of both states. While the idea of connecting the two states through a highway dated way back in the 1960s, the appointment of Lebuhraya Borneo Utara Sdn Bhd as the project delivery partner (for upgrading and widening of roads that stretch across 1,089km in Sarawak) has gotten the ball rolling with 10 more packages with road length of 60km to 90km up for tender in several phases this year.
The requirement of a 70% Sarawakian partner for the construction of the Pan Borneo Highway is expected to benefit local players such as Cahya Mata Sarawak Bhd (CMS), Hock Seng Lee Bhd (HSL), KKB Engineering Bhd (KKB), Sarawak Cable Bhd (SCB) and Naim Holdings Bhd.
The first two packages under the Sematan-Miri stretch are expected to be awarded soon. After which, more jobs will be awarded in June, September and November. Some of the pre-qualified contractors and consortia include CMS, Gamuda Bhd, IJM Corp Bhd, Sunway Construction Group Bhd, Naim, HSL and Zecon Bhd.
CMS, SCB and Naim could benefit from supplying building materials for the construction of the highway. On top of that, CMS and Naim are also deemed as potential beneficiaries for the construction of the infrastructure alongside HSL and KKB due to their respective expertise and track record in other projects in the state.
Conglomerate CMS is the biggest listed company in Sarawak with a market cap of RM5.3bil and is involved in the manufacturing of cement, construction and road maintenance as well as property development.
HSL, which has built 700km of roads in Sarawak, was shortlisted for the package three worth over RM1bil which spans 73km from Serian to Simunjan. Should HSL clinch the job, the potential contribution to its pre-tax earnings is estimated at RM100mil if margins are intact. On this score, it is notable that possible additional soil reinforcement work and changes in technical specifications that arise from the peat soil in Sarawak might lead to margin erosion and even cost overruns.
Steel fabricator KKB would have an edge in installing guardrails and building bridge structures as there would be intricate parts of the highway that will span over areas with rivers and ridges.
The steel fabricator’s capabilities are in inter-urban road infrastructure and downstream oil and gas. In the past five years, KKB was able to record an average pre-tax profit margin of 23%.
Meanwhile, Naim has partnered an established Peninsular Malaysia-based construction firm to bid for a slice of the project. The firm owns two quarries and three premix plants and also plans to bid for the supply of road construction materials. As the election in Sarawak heats up, listed companies based there should see some price movements too.
Based on historical numbers, pre-election jittery can lead to profit-taking activities as investors wait out the uncertainties of any possible political change. Pursuant to the 2011 election, we can also see that share prices of the companies dipped after the ruling party lost eight seats to the opposition. However, we opine that the influence of incumbent parties like Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu remains strong especially in the rural areas.
PM says Pan Borneo Highway will boost economic growth, development and unity in Sarawak
SERIAN: The Pan Borneo Highway will benefit Sarawak in terms of development, economy and unity.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the project would not only be a catalyst for economic growth but a game changer that would bring huge transformations to the state’s landscape.
The RM16-billion project was also expected to create an eight-fold multiplier effect on the state’s economy, he said.
“Thirdly, if we want to be a united and developed state, we must ensure a better and effective connectivity for the people, not only in terms of telecommunications like handphone, but also in terms of mobility.
“When this highway is completed, it will be easier for Sarawakians and Malaysians in general to move around and communicate with one another.
“This will surely strengthen the spirit of unity and turn Sarawak to be more united,” Najib said when launching the construction of the 75km stretch of the Pan Borneo Highway project from Serian roundabout to Pantu junction here yesterday.
He said construction of the stretch costing about RM1.46 billion was the third and biggest package compared to the other two packages launched previously. The first package is from Telok Melano to Sematan and the second from Nyabau to Bakun intersection.
By the end of this year, 10 packages of the project would be implemented in Sarawak. The fourth package is to be launched next month, he added.
“The Pan Borneo Highway project is a gift from the federal government to Sarawak. In April 2013, I made a pledge that if BN (Barisan Nasional) is given the mandate in the 13th general election, one of our main promises is that we would implement Pan Borneo Highway for Sarawak. We honoured our promises to Sarawakians.”
Najib assured that the Pan Borneo Highway project would be implemented despite the drop in prices of oil and commodities, adding what made it more meaningful was that the highway would be without toll.
With the states in Peninsular Malaysia from Perlis to Johor seeing rapid development and changes after the construction of the North-South Highway, he believed that Sarawak too would see tremendous development from Sematan to Lawas after the Pan Borneo Highway project is completed.
“When the federal government agreed for this highway project to be implemented, I told them early that I wanted the contracts for this project, be they small or big, to be awarded only to Sarawakian companies owned by Sarawakians.”
In reiterating his commitment to Sarawak, he said the government of the day did not only have a dream for Sarawak, but also plans and vision for the people of Sarawak because Sarawakians needed to get all the benefits for being a partner in the federation.
“Don’t be influenced by the opposition – they can promise anything but they cannot deliver for the people of Sarawak. We have delivered for the people of Sarawak. I also said when we implement this project we must be fair because Sarawak has many races and ethnicities.
“We have to ensure that there is social justice in anything we do and all the ethnics will benefit from the implementation of this Pan Borneo Highway project. We want to ensure that the people of Sarawak would benefit from this.”
Among those present at the event were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem, Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu, State Secretary Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohd Morshidi Abdul Ghani, Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Richard Riot, Housing Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg, Infrastructure Development and Communications Minister Dato Sri Michael Manyin, Assistant Minister of Resource Planning Datuk Naroden Majais and Deputy State Legislative Assembly Speaker Datuk Roland Sagah.
