Although EPF had been selling some portions, the fact is, EPF is still a substantial shareholder, holding 16.82% of TNB shares as of today

D0n't be afraid of EPF selling. Take advantage. If not how to buy cheap? Beat them at their own game. Most of the time they don't know what they are doing. Don't overrate them.

Rainy season have come so peak demand will taper off. I am a little concerned about the recent fuel price hike despite ICPT.

nothing to fear @starsherpa (analyst remain neutral)

RAB – fuel cost pass-through. Under RAB framework, there is an ICPT mechanism to pass-through the fluctuation of fuel costs to end users. Historically, government has been subsidizing fully (through KWIE or other funds) or partially and allowed to pass through the higher energy fuel costs to end users in the form of surcharges. Hence, we expect TNB to remain neutral from the recent surge in energy prices (except for short term cash flow impact due to timing recognition mismatch), while PGB and YTLP are not directly affected by fuel costs.

Posted by PassionateInvestor > 2021-10-20 16:26 | Report Abuse

@starsherpa. Your concern is not to say unreasonable. A couple of power providers in UK and Singapore have already folded and suppose we can assume that the same costs pressure is applicable to TNB since it is a worldwide issue.
Let's hope that the impact will be minimum as I do love it's dividends.

opportunity on 5G is on the table for Tenaga

On July 5, Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB), the government's special-purpose vehicle tasked with executing the 5G rollout, announced that Ericsson had been selected to design and build Malaysia's nationwide 5G network. The project is estimated to cost RMll billion and will incorporate
tower rental and fibre leasing, with the latter possibly proving to be lucrative for fibre asset owners
such as Tenaga. It is understood that DNB is likely to lease the existing fibre-optic cable network owned by different parties, including Tenaga and the telecommunications companies. However, more needs to be built and, for that , DNB will have an open tender to award the jobs. While microwave backhaul through towers is the most common technology for 4G/5G backhaul, fibre is the preferred choice to confidently support 5G implementation such as the Internet of Things, where smart household appliances — dozens in each home eventually flood the network .
"You see our pole at the doorstep of most premises in the country that says something about our competitive advantage, " says Baharin. Like he says, Tenaga's competitive advantage is in its last-mile connectivity. Any home with electricity supply practically has Tenaga's fibre assets ready to be activated to support the 5G rollout.

This year, Malaysia will see 5G rollout in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Cyberjaya, followed by
Selangor, Penang , Johor, Sabah and Sarawak in 2022 and other states in 2023.
"At the moment, the industry is consolidating, the people are collaborating, and Tenaga is no exception, " Baharin comments. " We are quite open to that consolidation and to collaboration with different parties that see any mutual benefit of working together. It's a question of where and when we can go in. It's quite a crowded market. " Thus far, Tenaga's fibre venture has largely revolved around the provision of broadband services to operators riding on its infrastructure.
Since last year, Tenaga's wholly-owned unit Alio Technology Sdn Bhd has partnered with Astro, DiGi and Celcom to lease its assets, using a wholesale model. The utility group is now activating its fibre assets in Perak , Penang , Kedah and Johor, with a revised target of connecting 180,000 premises by year-end. "The contribution is small at the moment , yes, but we see a future
ahead, " says Baharin .

It's frustrating seeing the Tenaga price sitting in the current price range, however, it is understandable. The Funds currently buying the stock are not going to move the price upwards until they can see clear signs that EPF have finished with their selling.

Once EPF have moved out of the current selling, my price targets are (1)10.20, (2)10.36/10.42 and (3)10.58/10.62, providing the KLCI remains above 1,600.

An article released today has similar technical targets. See below....

***************************************************

Technical Tracker - TENAGA: Set to Rebound Soon

n line with China power crunch, TENAGA share prices had fallen 5.7% from a high of RM10.33 to RM9.76 yesterday. We continue to like TENAGA on the back of better utilities demand prospect that is driven by Malaysia’s transition into Phase 3 and 4 of National Recovery Plan.

We believe the risk-reward profile had turned attractive after recent weakness, underpinned by stable FY20-23 EPS CAGR of 5%, undemanding valuations of 11.3x FY22E (-28% vs 5Y mean 15.7x) and 1.01x P/B (-22% vs 5Y mean 1.3x) coupled with attractive DY of 5.1% for FY21-22. As such, we reckon the current sell down is mainly driven by the sentiment, and recent weakness in share prices provides a great opportunity to accumulate the stock as a recovery proxy.

Despite lingering fear that the recent surge in power energy would impact TENAGA in terms of electricity generation cost and demand for the utilities, we nonetheless are not overly concerned as the Imbalance Cost Pass-Through (ICPT) mechanism will allow TENAGA to transfer the fluctuation risk of fuel energy cost to end-users or be compensated by the government. With the hike in energy cost, we expect a potential surcharge of RM7.6bn in 1H22 to be pass-through. Hence, TENAGA is deemed to be neutral from the hike in energy cost. Going forward, TENAGA will continue to leverage into its power business through focusing its RE investment and will not undertake any new coal-fired power plant development, this is in line with the government pledge.

Technically, TENAGA is poised for symmetrical triangle breakout (RM9.85). A successful breakout will spur the prices toward RM10.23 before reaching our LT targets of RM 10.63. Cut lost at RM9.54.

Research firms positive on TNB's RE expansion in UK

(October 21, 2021 12:38 pm +08)

KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 21): Tenaga Nasional Bhd’s (TNB) move to expand its renewable energy (RE) portfolio has received a positive response from research houses.

On Wednesday, TNB announced that its subsidiary Vantage RE Ltd has acquired a 49% stake in an offshore wind farm company Blyth Offshore Demonstrator Ltd (BODL) from EDF Renewables, a subsidiary of the French utility company Électricité de France (EDF).

The acquisition marks the utility giant’s maiden entry into the international offshore wind market as BODL currently owns offshore wind assets off the coast of Blyth, Northumberland, England.

The assets include five turbines with a total installed capacity of 41.5 megawatts (MW) (Blyth 1) and further development rights for a floating offshore wind project of up to 58.4MW (Blyth 2) off the Northumberland coast.

In a note on Thursday, Kenanga Research said although it is a small investment, the move would set the pace in growing the group’s RE portfolio in the UK and Europe, where the utility giant plans to increase it by 2,733MW by 2025.

"This also helps to address the pressing environmental, social and governance (ESG) concern that has pressured its share price in the past years,” it said, maintaining its "outperform" call on TNB’s shares, with a target price (TP) of RM11.80 per share.

Meanwhile, MIDF Research noted that although no details of the transaction value were revealed, the greenfield installed cost of offshore wind generators has fallen by 28% in the past four years and stood at US$3.8 million per MW in 2019.

“Having said that, Blyth 1 is relatively a mature asset, having been in operations for circa four years, and is backed by the Renewable Obligation Certificates (ROC) subsidy regime, hence we think a premium is likely,” it said in a note on Thursday.

As such, the research house retained its "buy" call on TNB with an unchanged TP of RM11.80 per share, factoring in a 10% ESG discount to reflect the valuation pressure on TNB, given its generation unit’s high exposure to coal power plants.

It noted that the plants currently account for 24% of overall group revenue and the coal power purchase agreements (PPAs) are expected to fall off the grid only from 2029 onwards.

“Nevertheless, TNB had revealed its 2050 sustainability pathway, which includes a commitment to reduce emission intensity by 35% and coal capacity by 50% by 2035, as well as an aspiration to achieve net-zero emissions and to be coal-free by 2050.

"These should eventually provide a clear direction in TNB’s sustainability agenda and gradually reduce the ESG overhang on the stock," it said.
