managing director Ong Choon Lui said the group is tying up with other firms to bid for the heavy-duty power generator contract under the mass rapid transit (MRT) Line 3 project.

“We do not want to speculate. The result is expected to be announced by the end of this year,” Ong told newsmen after the company’s extraordinary general meeting (EGM) yesterday.

Apart from the MRT Line 3, Ong said Bintai Kinden is bidding for M&E jobs in the oil and gas sector, besides looking for projects involving factories and the hospitality sector.

Bintai Kinden is active in both Malaysia and Singapore. Its order book here currently stands at RM500 million, while its Singapore order book is valued at S$480 million (RM1.29 billion), which the group believes will keep it busy for the next two to three years.

Ong said some 70% to 80% of group revenue is currently derived from its engineering segment. He expects the segment’s total contribution to grow to 90% in the next two years, underpinned by the group’s strong order and tender books, along with the consolidation of its engineering businesses.

Ong said the group aims to become the biggest engineering firm in the country, and ultimately the world. To achieve this, he said the group is focusing on expanding its business beyond Singapore to Indonesia, Myanmar, Vietnam and Thailand. The group will start off with sectors like transport — such as the MRT project — and oil and gas, he said, besides looking at constructing industrial parks before branching out to other sectors.

The group is also studying the European market, but no viable projects have been identified yet.

By expanding its engineering segment, Ong believes the group can withstand uncertainties that may affect earnings.
