Why hedging? Because funds who holds bluechips for long term wants to protect their portfolio from market fluctuation,specfically during mkt downturn. So instead of liquidating their holding, fund managers may open a short position in mkt indices that will counter the lost in share value of their portfolio. Ideally if the fund holds 10m rgt worth of bluecchip, they may initiate 10m rgt worth of short position in index futures.

Guys! Bursa is a small market. All it takes is a strong proprietary trader to force the market down. Even without short sellers, the market moves due to fund managers or large sharks buying and selling. Every quarter, we can see foreign fund take advantage of our small market and 'kill' the ikan bilis and some slow fund managers in the market. Presently, lots of liquidity in the market because many individuals are looking to the stock market to make money because unit trust returns are slow, and typically lose money / reducing capital when market drops if compare to EPF g'teed pincipal. Retail traders are not professional, they are the ones who suffer most with short sellers. Because retail traders suffer most, they will look for alternative avenues for investment like properties which have led to our overprices properties especially residential. Even the video pointed out the cons, short sellers can cause the market to crash and a new cycle of negativity in the economy can lead to recession.

My personally thought, some protection need to be in place to protect local investors from predatory foreign funds like imposed by Indonesia. The accumulation of local funds into the market can increase the number of listed firms by replacing bank borrowings with listed instruments. And as you know, less bank borrowings somehow give more resilience to a company during difficult times. Banking system is not build to assist those in need, banks are there as economic conduit but some banks go overboard creating other economic disasters like property overhang and high gearing for businesses and individuals.
