DBKL bans refugees, unaccompanied foreigners from Selayang wholesale market

The Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has banned refugees, even those recognised by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), from entering the Kuala Lumpur Wholesale Market in Selayang.

The notice, which was issued on Friday, June 19 by Mayor Datuk Nor Hisham Ahmad Dahlan, also said that foreigners are only allowed into the market if they have a valid permit and are accompanied by a Malaysian.


“Any individuals entering the Kuala Lumpur Wholesale Market will be screened and must register before they are allowed entry.

“All licensees and workers at the market (including IIUM, Wholesale Consortium, High Kuan and FCCT) can only enter if you are carrying a licensed/worker’s pass.

“All UNHCR card holders are denied entry,” said the notice.

No reason was given for the ban on the refugees.

A report by online portal Malaysiakini said that a DBKL staff had confirmed that the notice was issued by its licensing department.

Recently, authorities had raided the market as well as its vicinity which led to the arrests of hundreds of undocumented migrants, including Rohingya refugees. Foreigners made up around 90 per cent of the market workers.

The market located in Selayang was also temporarily closed for four days in April to disinfect the premises and screen the workers after it was identified as a Covid-19 cluster where 28 people were infected and a 36-year-old Myanmar man had died.

On June 18, Federal Territories Minister Tan Sri Annuar Musa said that there are still undocumented migrants trading in the vicinity of the market, but there are none within the premises itself.

Before covid going to Selayang market and outside surrounding the market with foreigners and their stalls one would feel it a foreign place compared to the 90's.
Employment should be for locals and without foreigners the greedy stall owners won't be able to hire cheap labour . They should use locals and forklifts and modernize etc and reasonable wages to attract locals. Many locals are also unemployed.

Aiya you should have seen the surrounding area where this whole sale market were located...it was may be it is still like a slum in India..Feces..betel leave spat stain...hoarding....not to mention the amount of criminal activities and homicide among these migrants....this people never uttered a word to improve the living quality of the people in that area or taken effort to clean that area...Sekarang dia mahu the whole selayang to be slum...

Most Malaysian workers who have hardship and retreachment actually do go to PSM because it is the only party which truly helps the workers. So PSM is the champion of all Marginalized groups and are color blind unlike some self centered people who only think about their skin, their religion, their family and their well being. If Malaysia is serious to should arrest all employers and bosses who employ illegal migrants. This they wont do because money speaks. And Apa Aku Dapat will cheer when illegal and refugees arrested not knowing the real issues. Keep dreaming

Don’t you know that Malaysians are predominantly insecure. So the best way to alienate them is to tell them what to do

I realise that being told what to do was the way you were raised, and you probably know nothing else

But can’t you make some effort to work together. Suggestion:

“PSM would like to suggest that DBKL reverse their decisions on...... “

Then outline the reasons behind your request

That way you might open up avenues for discussion

But telling DBKL what to do is guaranteed to get the door slammed in your face

Which is just what you deserve
