Dr. Robert Redfield, director of the Centers of Disease Control, testified today that the majority of Americans will not have access to a COVID-19 vaccine until the middle of next year. Redfield appeared before the Senate Appropriations Committee to discuss the Trump administration’s response to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and answer questions about the vaccine development process. When pressed about how quickly the vaccine could become widely available, the CDC director said that the most vulnerable populations would receive the first doses and less high-risk Americans would receive it later. Redfield says that for a vaccine to be ‘fully available to the American public ... to get back to our regular life, I think we are probably looking at late second quarter, third quarter 2021.’ This predicted timeline contradicts recent messaging from Pres. Trump, who said in an ABC town hall last night that 'we're within weeks of getting' a vaccine and in a press conference Wednesday that Redfield was mistaken or ‘confused’ about when the vaccine would be available for mass distribution. The CDC director also added that the agency does not have the estimated $6 billion it requires in order to mass produce and distribute a vaccine — funds that need to be approved as part of Congress’ next round of coronavirus relief.

Conclusion: Vaccine won't be out until middle next year 2021.

Please know the difference between available and widely accessible. It can be out as soon as October in USA but may not be widely available till mid 2021 (to reach poor countries eg South Africa region etc).
