KUALA LUMPUR: The FBM KLCI closed lower on Thursday, its third straight session in negative territory as US economic data spooked investors.
At 5pm, the 30-stock index ended down 4.66 points, or 0.33% to 1,424.89 after rising to an intraday high of 1,431.32.
Market breadth turned negative as losers overpowered the gainers on a ratio of 450-to-321 stocks. Traded volumes stood at 2.5 billion shares worth RM1.54bil.

U.S. stocks ended the short trading week higher on Thursday as investors digested weekly data on the number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits, while looking to Friday’s jobs report for signs of a slowing economy and the future of the Federal Reserve’s interest rate policy.
However, the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite booked their first losing week in four, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained a modest 0.6% for the week, according to Dow Jones Market Data.
The U.S. stock market will close on Friday, April 7, in observance of Good Friday and reopen on Monday, April 10.
What happened
The S&P 500 SPX, +0.36% gained 14.64 points, or 0.4%, to end at 4,105.02.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.01% inched 2.57 points higher, to end nearly flat at 33,485.29.
The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.76% advanced 91.09 points, or 0.8%, to finish at 12,087.96.
On Wednesday, the Dow gained 80 points while both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq declined.
What drove markets
U.S. stocks finished modestly higher on Thursday after a volatile session.
However, with the exception of the Dow industrials, U.S. stocks still finished the week lower after three consecutive weekly gains for the S&P 500 and the tech-heavy Nasdaq. The Dow industrials rose 0.6% for the week, while the S&P 500 shed 0.1% and the Nasdaq slumped 1.1%, after scoring its best quarter since 2020, according to Dow Jones Market Data.
