Economist Associate Professor Dr Aimi Zulhazmi Abdul Rashid described TH and Felda’s deviation from their objectives as a “major blow” and that its economic implications, especially to the government, were “tremendous”.

Citing Felda Global Ventures Holdings Bhd as an example, he said “the purpose of investing is to share the wealth with stakeholders, namely the settlers and not just for the pockets of certain individual and serving their political agenda”, adding that political intervention in institutions, such as TH and Felda, was “unnecessary and pointless”.

He said TH and Felda needed professionals, not political appointees.

“Those placed there through political means would always invest or frame their business plans according to political benefits and mileage. Projects would be placed at locations of those in power, while development would only come to the targeted voters.”

He said they would only opt to please those vital to their political survival, leaving those in other constituencies who had no effect onthem in the dark.

Another vital factor that should be taken into consideration, Aimi said, was good governance and transparency of these institutions. He proposed that not only do these organisations report to their respective ministries but also tabled their reports in Parliament.

Political analyst and communications expert Professor Datuk Syed Arabi Syed Abdullah Idid used the Malay idiom “harapkan pagar, pagar makan padi” (betrayal of trust by those in positions of responsibility) to describe the current scenario in TH and Felda.

“We always take for granted that Malays are God-fearing, always caring but in reality we are not.”

Kok said the markets indicated positive trends on the traded prices in the future.

“Traders are more confident that post-end 2018 and into the early part of the new year, prices should go beyond the RM2,000 level,” Kok said.

She said generally, 2019 is being predicted as a better financial year for palm oil.

She said some analysts forecast a higher demand for the commodity by mid-2019 that should surpass its supply. “Prices would move much further north than current traded values.

“On our part, the move towards B10 palm biodiesel will also help reduce stock levels and support palm oil prices. We are also confident that through some of our strategic market penetration activities already on-going, uptake of Malaysian palm oil in large traditional markets like India, China and Pakistan will pick up.

“In addition, new markets in Asean, Africa and the Middle East, bolstered by their large population, are hungry for more affordable palm oil and our marketers are already active in these regions,” Kok said.

For the small players in the industry, she said, a rethink in strategy was overdue, and the ministry would spearhead efforts to increase their low yields for better output.

She added that this would result in them enjoying higher overall income, which would not be easily threatened by cyclical prices as seen in the current quarter.

wow privatisation for fgv?

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa could be the one presenting the problems at TH, while it has been reported that Economic Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali will table the White Paper on FELDA on Monday.

Earlier, The Edge had reported that the White Paper on FELDA would include three proposals for the beleaguered government agency, which is now saddled with RM8 billion in debt. These are: (i) to improve the management of FELDA; (ii) the privatisation of subsidiary FGV Holdings Bhd; and (iii) merging FELDA with the Federal Land Consolidation and Rehabilitation Authority Bhd (Felcra).

The financial capacity of shareholders to determine fate of FGV

By MAHANUM ABDUL AZIZ - December 7, 2018 @ 6:03pm
KUALA LUMPUR: The plan to delist FGV Holdings Bhd from Bursa Malaysia will depend on the financial capability of its major shareholders.

Current major shareholders are the Federal Land Development Authority (FELDA) who hold 21.24 per cent, followed by the Retirement Fund (Incorporated) or KWAP and Lembaga Tabung Haji at 7.83 per cent each.

Among the earlier global investors in FGV are Qatar Investment Authority, Hong Kong-based AIA Group Ltd, Fidelity Investments, Hong Kong-based Value Partners Group and other local retirement fund managers who purchase almost 20 percent during the initial public offering (IPO) exercise.

However, many investors have reduced their investments to cut down their losses.

Current market capitalisation of the world's leading palm oil plantation company stands at about RM3 billion.

Market analysts said FGV's share price is now 'cheap' and gave the stock a 'Buy' call.

Negative news such as legal actions taken against former director and the poor performance for the third quarter contributed to the fall in stock prices, one analyst said.

Meanwhile, Minority Shareholder Watchdog Group (MSWG) chief executive officer Devanesan Evanson said the move to make FGV as a private company is an option, but it is not the only option available to restore FGV and increase its shareholder value.

He considers FGV to be in good track record with the new directors and their actions in turning around the company.

FGV, Devanesan said, is also implementing various efforts to strengthen governance to rectify past mistakes.

"Whether to take the company private is its shareholder issue. Let us give time to the Board to do the right thing. The Board is taking proactive actions to restore FGV," he said.

Speculation of delisting FGV from Bursa Malaysia came to light after stock price plunged below RM1.00 per share, with some saying the move to make FGV a private company would be one viable option to restore it.

At the close of today's trading, FGV share price went up 0.005 sen to 79 sen.

FGV started trading on Bursa Malaysia on June 28, 2012, which saw its share price jump as high as RM5.46, an increase of 20 percent from the IPO price of RM4.55.
