DRB-HICOM is a Malaysian conglomerate that operates in various sectors, such as aerospace, defence, automotive, banking, postal, and services¹. The company's share price has been on an upward trend since the beginning of 2024, reaching a 52-week high of RM 2.80 on February 13, 2024². Some of the factors that may contribute to the company's performance include:
- The successful completion of the sale of its 49% stake in Proton Holdings to China's Geely Automobile Holdings, which resulted in a net gain of RM 1.1 billion for the company³.
- The strong demand for its defence products, especially the AV8 Gempita armoured vehicles, which have been delivered to the Malaysian Army and exported to several countries in the Middle East and Africa⁴.
- The expansion of its postal and logistics business, which has benefited from the growth of e-commerce and the digital economy in Malaysia and the region⁵.

Bank Muamalat is an Islamic bank in Malaysia that is 70%-owned by DRB-Hicom, a Malaysian conglomerate that operates in various sectors¹. DRB-Hicom acquired its stake in Bank Muamalat from Bukhary Capital, a company controlled by Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Albukhary, in 2008². Bank Negara Malaysia, the central bank, approved the acquisition on condition that DRB-Hicom would eventually pare down its stake to at least 40%².
However, DRB-Hicom has not been able to find a suitable buyer or partner for Bank Muamalat, despite having talks with several local and foreign financial institutions over the years². The latest attempt was with Bahrain-based Al-Baraka Banking Group in 2010, but the deal did not materialize². DRB-Hicom has also considered listing Bank Muamalat on the stock exchange as a way to reduce its stake, but there has been no progress on this front either¹.
According to sources, Syed Mokhtar has no plan to exit the banking business and still intends to trim his stake in Bank Muamalat through a listing in the next two years or so¹. However, the banking industry is facing increasing challenges and competition, especially in the Islamic segment, which may affect Bank Muamalat's performance and valuation². Therefore, it is uncertain when and how DRB-Hicom will be able to divest its stake in Bank Muamalat. 🤔
