PETALING JAYA: A boat was stopped by the Selangor Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) for carrying more than 30 passengers over the limit of 11.

Selangor MMEA director Captain Abdul Muhaimin Muhammad Salleh said the boat was stopped at 1pm yesterday (Sun) around 0.3 nautical miles south of Tanjung Harapan. It was en route to Pulau Ketam at the time.

"Inspections showed that the vessel had been carrying 45 passengers, surpassing the permitted number and that they had not been wearing life jackets.

"The boat was helmed by two crew members aged 19 and 40 years old," Capt Abdul Muhammad said in a statement today.

The boat's passengers were brought to the Pulau Ketam jetty whereas the two crewmembers were escorted to the marine police jetty in Pulau Indah for further investigation.

The case is being investigated under the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952 for violating the terms of the license for bringing more than the limit of 11 passengers and not wearing life jackets.
