KUALA LUMPUR: Selangor Bersatu chief Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali has played down a news report that he purportedly declined an offer to be appointed party secretary-general.

However, Azmin did not deny if it was true that he turned down the offer to be made party secretary-general.

“Still early before the polls. I will discuss with the party president and take his advice,” Azmin told The Star.

According to reports, Azmin had declined the post, allegedly because he was targeting a more senior position within Bersatu.

On Saturday (July 13), Bersatu proposed its line-up of the top five leaders ahead of its election in October, with Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin “bumped up” as the party’s deputy president.

The party also proposed Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu, Datuk Seri Dr Ronald Kiandee and Datuk Dr Radzi Jidin as Bersatu’s vice presidents and Azmin as secretary-general.

Hamzah is the current Bersatu secretary-general; Ahmad Faizal is the deputy president; Kiandee and Radzi are vice presidents; and Azmin has been appointed supreme council member.

However, party president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said that although the suggested lineup for the five top posts has been made, this should not deter members from challenging the top leadership positions in the election.

Bersatu is scheduled to hold its party polls in October this year.
