PETALING JAYA: The Transport Ministry must address flight delays following the recent increase in the number of late departures, says MCA deputy president Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon (pic).

He said delays had grown “alarmingly frequent,” noting a news report on businessman Datuk Seri Yusuf Taiyoob who had his flight retimed four times, leading to the plane only leaving over four hours later than its original departure time.

“Such delays are unacceptable as they disrupt passengers’ schedules and reveal a pattern of inefficiency and disregard for travellers’ time.

“The Transport Ministry led by minister Anthony Loke must urgently tackle this issue. A thorough review of timetables, delay management procedures and customer service protocols is crucial.

“Airlines must be held accountable for failing to adhere to published schedules. Stricter penalties and regulatory measures should be implemented to ensure compliance and prevent further inefficiencies,” he said in a statement.

Yusuf, the managing director of one of the largest date importers in the country, had complained that his 45-minute flight was supposed to depart for Penang at 5pm but was delayed at least four times and only took off at 9pm.

He said no one from the carrier gave him an explanation as to why the flight was delayed.

Meanwhile, Dr Mah said the ministry must also investigate airline operational practices and schedules, as well as regular audits and evaluations, to ensure airlines meet standards.

“Additionally, airlines must provide timely and transparent updates about delays and cancellations to minimise passenger inconvenience.

“Clear policies for compensating passengers affected by significant delays are also needed to mitigate the impact on travellers.

“It is evident that this issue extends beyond a single flight and reflects systemic problems in airline operations.

“Such recurring delays not only disrupt the travel plans of individuals, but also adversely impact the broader business community – which relies on timely and reliable air travel,” he said.
