KUALA LUMPUR: All public and private sector construction projects worth RM10mil and above are required to adopt the Building Information Modelling (BIM) system, says Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan.

The Deputy Works Minister said a new working committee will be formed and combined with the existing committee for Industrialised Building System (IBS) to oversee technology-related matters for all construction projects.

"The National Development Action Council and the ministry have agreed to adopt the BIM system for all new government and private sector projects.

“The move is aimed at reducing construction issues and clashes, especially related to sewage mapping in Kuala Lumpur.

"BIM is not just for building but also sewage and road construction," he told the press after opening the 13th International Conference on Geotechnical Engineering in Tropical Regions (Geotropika) and 3rd International Conference on Highway and Transportation Engineering (Chitra), collectively known as Geochitra 2024.

Ahmad noted that the new committee called the "New Construction Technologies Committee" will be formed and led by the ministry's new secretary-general to standardise the use of BIM and other new technologies in road and building projects.

He added that the government will also work with universities to develop its own BIM software to reduce reliance on costly overseas systems.

In June, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had announced the government's plan to adopt BIM for both public and private projects, effective Aug 1.
