In Malaysia, we are still lacking in fibre infrastructure and it is estimated that only 40% of mobile towers in the country are fiberised. In order to roll out 5G, we would need more fibre-connected towers or else the implementation will be compromised like the current state of 4G. Individual licensees may not have the financial means to invest in fibre. As a result, in some areas, you could get full bars on 4G but the connectivity is slow if it’s using microwave access.

PETALING JAYA: The National Fiberisation and Connectivity Plan (NFCP) and 5G rollout could see some delays in timeline with the prolonged movement control order (MCO), coupled with uncertainties if the industry regulator revises its plans for the sector, says Kenanga Research.

It said players themselves are having difficulties with installation and expansion work, limiting to infrastructure maintenance and it is likely that network expansion goals driven by the NFCP are also on hold.

It was reported that Ericsson has secured 79 5G commercial contracts at the end of 2019 versus 63 by Nokia and 50 by Huawei. In Malaysia, Ericsson is one of two key telecommunication partners for Celcom. In 2017, Celcom and Ericsson were the first to conduct 5G trials in Malaysia with speeds up to 18Gbps on the 28GHz band.
