* US stocks fell sharply on Wednesday after President Donald Trump told the country to brace for a "very, very painful two weeks" amid the coronavirus pandemic.
* The White House projected that the US could see 100,000 to 240,000 deaths from COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus.
* The losses came on the heels of the worst-ever first quarter for the Dow Jones industrial average.

US stocks fell Wednesday after President Donald Trump issued a dire new warning about pain ahead due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Trump told Americans to brace for a "very, very painful two weeks" during a press briefing Tuesday evening, adding "this is going to be three weeks like we've never seen before."
The White House is now projecting that the US could see between 100,000 and 240,000 deaths from the coronavirus pandemic, peaking over the next two weeks. Right now, the US has 189,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19, currently the largest outbreak in the world. As of April 1, 4,000 have died of coronavirus in the US.

Here's where major US indexes stood at the 4 p.m. ET market close on Wednesday:
* S&P 500: 2,470.50, down 4.4%
* Dow Jones industrial average: 20,943.51, down 4.4% (974 points)
* Nasdaq composite: 7,360.58, down 4.4%

Investor sentiment is falling as the impact of the coronavirus pandemic is "maybe starting to hit home for people that had been hoping for better news," Liz Ann Sonders, chief investment strategist at Charles Schwab, told Markets Insider in an interview.
The losses came after the Dow Jones industrial average posted its worst-ever quarterly performance on Tuesday, slipping more than 23%. Both the Dow and the S&P 500 also posted their worst monthly returns since the depth of the financial crisis in October 2008, falling 14% and 13% in March.

Last year, the central bank reduced the base rate use for lending to 3% from 3.25% in May.

Imran Yassin expects BNM to slash another 25bps, bringing the OPR to 2.25% at the next MPC’s meeting.

“It is very unlikely that the OPR will go to zero because we opine that BNM will need to maintain some buffer to give them room to manoeuvre should the economic conditions worsen,” he said.

In a report, Hong Leong Investment Bank said BNM will likely reduce the policy rate by a total of 50bps this year to bring the rate down to 2% in 2020.

OPEC+ to Meet, With Cuts Expected
Oil ministers will be brushing up on their video conference skills tonight.

OPEC+ will hold its virtual meeting Thursday that many (bulls) are hoping will result in production cuts to stabilize the market.

WTI futures spiked 11% in late trading as Algeria revved up expectations, saying “massive” output cuts were on the cards, which could be around 10 million barrels per day.

That added to enthusiasm about Russia planning to offer cuts of 1.6 million barrels, Reuters reported, citing a Kremlin source.

U.S. participation could be the key to whether a deal goes through. But the world’s largest crude producer signaled it will contribute about 1.2 million bpd at most in cuts that would be market driven, not an official reduction.

Real unemployment in the United States has likely hit 14.7%, the highest level since 1940
Over a three week stretch, 16.8 million Americans have filed for unemployment.

Another 6.6 million Americans filed initial unemployment claims in the week ending April 4. That follows 3.3 million and 6.9 million in the two previous weeks, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

Before this three-week stretch of 16.8 million of initial jobless claims, there were already 7.1 million unemployed Americans as of March 13, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. When the figures are combined, it would equal 23.9 million unemployed, or a real unemployment rate of 14.7%—which would be the highest level since the early years of World War II.

The ringgit was lower against the US dollar in the early session today on weaker demand for the local note due to the country’s bearish economic outlook..... as if other countries economy is good. That's our analysts standard.
