@Steven Chan Sotong kering is also another word for underwear being had out to dry. Sotong also used to describe a feminine guy / Gay. So please use the word Sotong in the right context.

Just done meeting. For shareholders that demand increase salary for its workers, etc. let the management does it works. If salary of all the workers increase substantially (over the market many folds), it will eat into their profit margin. That time you will complain why maybank earns so less, why EPS so low, dividend so less, etc. On one hand, you want their workers to have high salary, and on the other hand, you want maybank to earn lots of money so you can have lots of dividend. It is hard to achieve it…

@jeffchan1901, what I look see look see RHB are :
It is cheap in term of PE & PB
It's dividend yield is high
Its price has been trading at a very narrow range for years
Its foreign holding has been declining over the years ( from 25.65 in 2020 to 15.41 current March)

When come the share price movement, I think MBB is between RHB & CIMB....so I opt for MBB, (higher beta than RHB but lower than CIMB)

Just my one sen :)

Morning sui sui reached 9.85...afternoon hit a low of 9.76 before closing 9.78.
Hmm.....profit taking days must be....

stkoay,

It is not accurate to say RHB's DY is higher than MAYBANK's.
MAYBANK's DY = 0.60/9.78 = 6.13%.

For RHB,
Out of the 40 sen dividend, 10 sen is DRIP,
Look at past record, RHB DRIP take-up rate was around 85%,
Therefore RHB's DY = (0.3+0.015) / 5.51 = 5.72%.

Posted by Tedinvestor > 1 week ago | Report Abuse

DUMB! You can choose full dividend payment. Drp is optional

Posted by Tedinvestor > 1 week ago | Report Abuse

Having large foreign holdings not necessarily good during bear market.

Posted by prudentinvestor > 1 week ago | Report Abuse

@i3gambler, you must have failed your SPM mathematics badly. After being allocated drp shares, you also choose to sell those shares. Suppose the amount of dividend that you can use to subscribe for drp share is RM4880, you would be allocated 1000 new RHB Bank shares which are worth RM5510 today. Can you re calculate RHB Bank's dividend yield?

Agree that high foreign holding may not necessarily be good....high means chance of selling is higher than adding.
What I am referring to is the trend....whether FF has been buying or selling.

@Stkoay agree. when FF exit and big boys come in, only a matter of time when FF will come again. That time the stocks will fly. Of course big boys will exit to take profit. All these horse trading happens all the time. The trick is when to come in and scoop on the cheap. So as long as KLCI is below 1600 points sure got many more opportunities. At mid 1600 the gravy train will slow down considerably and even stop. the highest was 1800s during the bull run of yester years. Just sharing my thoughts with all here. Dont flame me ya

Indonesia rate hike affect CIMB more than Maybank. Brokerhouse has been promoting CIMB based on its Indonesia growth story.

As for Malaysia, raise rate unlikely as inflation still low for time being.

Reports suggest US has ‘preliminarily discussed sanctions on some Chinese banks’ over their trade with Russia
Analysts say moves to remove China from the Swift interbank financial system could create a ‘huge problem’ for global trade

In the future, will the US seize the whole China foreign exchange reserves like what did to Russia? Borrow money and do not need to pay back the money with interest rate.

Posted by prudentinvestor > 6 days ago | Report Abuse

China's economy is about as big as the US's economy. Seizing China's foreign exchange reserves will also hurt the US badly as China has the ability to fight back on many fronts. Mindful of this eventuality, China has already reduced its US dollar holdings by about $400 billion over the past 6 to 7 years and increased its holdings in gold and other currencies. Anyway, there is absolutely no reason for the US to do such thing even if China were to attack Taiwan one day because it is basically an internal affair.

prudentinvestor,

Let say RHB total out-standing shares = 195200 units.
It has only 2 shareholders, Mr. A and Mr. B,
Each of them holding 97600 shares, or equivalent to 50% ownership.

Last Interim Dividend of 15 sen plus this round of 25 sen Second Interim Dividend.
Mr. A opt to take up DRIP, so he get 14640+14640=29280 Cash and now holding 99600 shares.
Mr. B opt to take Cash, and collected 14640+24400=39040 Cash and now holding 97600 shares.

Mr. A's ownership in term of percentage = 99600 / (99600+97600) = 50.5%
Mr. B's ownership in term of percentage = 97600 / (99600+97600) = 49.5%

Mr. B thought that his investment in RHB give him DY of 39040/5.50/97600=7.27%?
But in actual, part of the Cash that he received is actually from selling 0.5% ownership.

I spend time to explain to you, if you still can not understand, I give up.

Posted by Kicapmanis > 6 days ago | Report Abuse

So by not taking drip, gets diluted yeah? But if hold significant amount of shares then the dilution will be meaningful..?

@i3gambler

Your calculation and the principle that you are trying to illustrate applies to all other stocks too, i.e. the dividend that we are receiving is paid out of the equity value of our stockholdings.

@i3gambler Thanks for the simplified explanation. Saves me the time to explain to my friend when I just send him your explanation. Also, buying cheap shares (DRIP usually sold at low price) will ensure you get more dividend in the future OR if you also decide to relinquish your portfolio in future, you will still be getting that amount (or higher) back then. Thats what I love about DRIP

i3gambler

Posted by i3gambler > 6 days ago | Report Abuse

Kicapmanis,

Look at past records, RHB DRIP take-up rate were around 85%,
Logically, the DY = (0.15+0.15+0.10*(15%) ) / 5.50 = 5.72%.

For Maybank, there were no DRIP for the last 3 dividends,
I hope no more DRIP in future.
For FY2023, DY =0.60 / 9.79 = 6.13%.
So I would say Maybank's DY is higher than RHB.

Last time I did not invest in Maybank, but now I do invest some.

jeffchan1901,

Frankly speaking, I don't like DRIP.
The company total out-standing shares will increase,
Harder for the EPS, DPS and share price to move up.

I bought Maybank because they have stop DRIP,
If Maybank continue DRIP again in future,
I hope other investors like it, then that is the time I will sell.

Pinky,

It is true that the dividend that we are receiving is paid out of the equity value.
However, Cash Dividend is a strong evidence that the company have the ability to pay out.

I never liked DRIP as it wil give me odd lots

Yeah generally ability to pay cash dividends mean that the company is healthy

Pinky,
Say if you are entitled to 12345 DRIP shares, you can ask for 12300 DRIP shares only, the balance will be paid to you in Cash

Posted by prudentinvestor > 5 days ago | Report Abuse

"Look at past records, RHB DRIP take-up rate were around 85%,
Logically, the DY = (0.15+0.15+0.10*(15%) ) / 5.50 = 5.72%."
@i3gambler, someone who has bought RHB Bank at RM5.50 a share and did not take up the DRP shares allocated to him would have received total dividend amounting to RM400 a year. His dividend yield is 7.27%. Your argument is specious. I subscribed for all the DRP shares offered to me and I gain an extra couple of hundred Ringgit. I also bought my RHB Bank shares at an average price of about RM5.50. My dividend yield is therefore slightly higher than 7.27%.

prudentinvestor
You must understand one thing, whenever there is DRIP, the total out-standing shares of the company will increase.
Therefore harder for the company EPS, DPS and price to move up.
Do not just look at the numbers of share you own, but the ownership in term of percentage is more important.

Posted by prudentinvestor > 4 days ago | Report Abuse

i3gambler, with DRP, RHB Bank's total dividend payable this round would be reduced by RM430 million, assuming the take up rate was 100%. It would need to issue an additional 88 million shares to its shareholders but it has an additional RM430 million to spare which it can loan out to earn interest. Maybank has 13 billion shares on issue and Public Bank has almost 20 billion shares compared to RHB's 4.3 billion.
Suppose my total dividend this round was RM10,000. I would be allocated 4,000/4.88 or 833 additional new shares which I can dispose of now at RM5.50 a share for a total of RM4,581.5. With DRP, I have extra RM581.5 or 5.815% extra.

https://www.thestar.com.my/business/business-news/2024/05/01/reeling-in-reluctant-retailers

“Retailers are attracted by a ‘hot’ market but interest on Bursa has mainly been in big-cap stocks, which local institutional investors were buying due to a more positive outlook for the local market following the politically stable environment, higher investments and policy direction. “This has helped the benchmark index rise to a two-year high.

“Retailers are probably waiting for more certainty on a continuation of the trend before returning, but it could be a case when they might get hit by some profit-taking instead,” he said.
