Pfizer said Friday that its easy-to-administer Covid-19 pill, used in combination with a widely used HIV drug, cut the risk of hospitalization or death by 89% in high-risk adults who’ve been exposed to the virus.

It’s now the second antiviral pill behind Merck’s to demonstrate strong effectiveness for treating Covid at the first sign of illness. If cleared by regulators, it would likely be a game changer in the ongoing global pandemic fight. Pfizer said it plans to submit its data to the Food and Drug Administration “as soon as possible.”

Pfizer’s pill, scientifically known as PF-07321332, is part of a class of medicines called protease inhibitors and works by inhibiting an enzyme the virus needs to replicate in human cells. Protease inhibitors are used to treat other viral pathogens such as HIV and hepatitis C.

The HIV drug helps slow the metabolism, or breakdown, of Pfizer’s pill in order for it to remain active in the body for longer periods of time at higher concentrations, the company said.

The company said its data on the drug is based on a mid-to-late stage study of 1,219 adults who had at least one underlying medical condition and a laboratory-confirmed infection within a five-day period. Participants were also given a low dose of ritonavir, a medication commonly used in combination treatments for HIV.

Pfizer said there were six hospitalizations and zero deaths out of the 607 trial participants who received the pill in combination with the HIV drug within five days of symptom onset. That compares with 41 hospitalizations and 10 deaths out of the 612 people who received a placebo.

@1invest1 Actually, I like that Genting bosses are not putting all their eggs in one basket. (unlike gloves). Instead of pumping everything into more and more casinos, Genting diversified into Hotels, Theme Park (admittedly both are casino linked), plantation, medical research, etc.
Heck, even RWLV is supposedly going to make most of it's revenue from non-gaming. (I'll believe it when I see it)

I'm confused what's going on with GenHK though... instead of genting bailing out GHK, genting bought assets from them at severely discounted price? ... I have no idea what the actual market price for that thing is though, so maybe it wasn't such a huge discount after all. hmm.

(Reuters) -A trial of Pfizer Inc's experimental antiviral pill for COVID-19 was stopped early after the drug was shown to cut by 89% the chances of hospitalization or death for adults at risk of developing severe disease, the company said on Friday.

The results appear to surpass those seen with Merck & Co Inc's pill, molnupiravir, which was shown last month to halve the likelihood of dying or being hospitalized for COVID-19 patients also at high risk of serious illness.

KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 7): Fitch Ratings has assigned Genting Malaysia Bhd's indirect 49%-owned associate Empire Resorts Inc a final "B+" long-term Issuer default rating (IDR) following the closing of Empire Resorts' new US$300 million (about RM1.25 billion) senior secured bonds and fresh US$75 million holding company (HoldCo) loan.

In a statement on Friday (Nov 5, 2021), Fitch said it had also assigned a "BB+"/"RR1" rating to Empire Resorts' senior secured notes.

"The rating outlook is stable. The stable outlook reflects the property's recent healthy operating performance and regional gaming's broader solid recovery.

"Empire (Resorts) completed a recapitalisation that included US$300 million of senior secured notes, a new US$75 million HoldCo loan, and a US$150 million preferred equity investment by Genting Malaysia," Fitch said.

WASHINGTON, Nov 7 (Reuters) - The United States is expecting a flood of international visitors crossing its borders by air and by land on Monday after lifting travel restrictions for much of the world's population first imposed in early 2020 to address the spread of COVID-19.

United Airlines is expecting about 50% more total international inbound passengers Monday compared to last Monday when it had about 20,000.

And Delta Air Lines (DAL.N) Chief Executive Ed Bastian has warned travelers should be prepared for initial long lines.

"It's going to be a bit sloppy at first. I can assure you, there will be lines unfortunately," Bastian said, adding that "we'll get it sorted out".

Delta said in the six weeks since the U.S reopening was announced it has seen a 450% increase in international point-of-sale bookings versus the six weeks prior to the announcement.

White House spokesman Kevin Munoz said on Twitter "As we expect high demand when the US lifts its existing air and land travel restrictions Monday, we are taking critical steps to be prepared by providing additional resources."

The Biden administration has held multiple calls with U.S. airlines to prepare for the influx of additional travelers that will begin arriving at U.S. airports and has warned travelers crossing from Canada and Mexico by land or ferry to be prepared for longer waits starting Monday.
