KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 5): Share prices of rubber glove makers Hartalega Holdings Bhd, Top Glove Corp Bhd, Kossan Rubber Industries Bhd and Supermax Corp Bhd rose in Wednesday (Jan 5) Bursa Malaysia morning trade in an apparent reaction to news on the emergence of IHU — a new variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes the Covid-19 pandemic.

The emergence of IHU appeared to have raised fresh pandemic concerns after the variant emerged in France recently, news.com.au reported on Wednesday (Jan 5).

It was reported that IHU was first detected in France last month, but is now making international headlines after catching the attention of global experts.

"The medical world is on alert yet again after a new mutant Covid-19 variant emerged in France recently. At least 12 cases were confirmed near the Marseilles area, and it is understood that many of those patients were hospitalised with the illness.

"Variant IHU, which is believed to be linked with travel to the African nation of Cameroon, has 46 mutations which experts fear could mean it is more resistant to existing vaccines.

Hong Leong Investment Bank Bhd analyst Ng Jun Sheng wrote in note on Wednesday (Jan 5) that the research house sees increased volatility in the Malaysian stock market on factors including "the emergence of new Covid-19 variant IHU (studies [of which] showed more mutations than Omicron), fluid domestic politics and the impact on sectors/corporates after widespread flooding in many states in Peninsular Malaysia”.

Omicron variant could be a ‘Christmas gift’, says German health expert
The Omicron variant could be a “Christmas gift” and may make the pandemic end sooner, a German clinical epidemiologist has said.

Professor Karl Lauterbach, who is running to be Germany’s next health minister, said the new variant could be positive if it causes milder illness.

He suggested that Omicron has so many mutations - 32 on the spike protein alone, which is twice as many as Delta - meaning it could be optimised to infect and be less severe, in line with how most respiratory viruses evolve.

It comes as experts in South Africa claim Omicron is causing milder symptoms than previous variants.

South African infectious disease expert Professor Salim Abdool Karim said existing Covid vaccines should be “highly effective” against the Omicron variant.

Professor Abdool Karim, who served as the South African government’s chief adviser during the first wave of the pandemic, said he believed vaccines would protect against hospitalisation and severe symptoms of coronavirus.

But he added it was “too early” to say whether Omicron, which has triggered many countries into reintroducing coronavirus restrictions, led to more severe clinical symptoms than previous variants, such as Delta.

He told a news conference on Monday: “Based on what we know and how the other variants of concern have reacted to vaccine immunity, we can expect that we will still see high effectiveness for hospitalisation and severe disease, and that protection of the vaccines is likely to remain strong.”

South African doctors who have treated Covid patients say Omicron so far appears to be producing mild symptoms, including a dry cough, fever and night sweats.

Professor Abdool Karim, a professor at South Africa’s University of KwaZulu-Natal and Columbia University in the United States, said no “red flags” had been raised so far.

Elsewhere on Monday, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said the emergence of the variant serves a reminder that “Covid-19 is not done with us”.

Addressing a special session of the World Health Assembly, WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, warned that “hard-won gains could vanish in an instant”.

He said: “The emergence of the highly-mutated Omicron variant underlines just how perilous and precarious our situation is.

“South Africa and Botswana should be thanked for detecting, sequencing and reporting this variant, not penalised.”

This year got 1 new variant as per informed by news.

We will see the momentum first.

If market reaction is still similar as 2021 then nothing much we can expect for glove stock in 2022.

Even as the world battles the uptick in COVID-19 cases owing to the Omicron variant, scientists in France have found another variant.

The discovery of the variant, dubbed B.1.640.2, was announced in a paper posted on medRxiv.


Called IHU, as of now, the strain was discovered by academics based at the IHU Mediterranee Infection on 10 December.

Here’s what we know so far of this new COVID-19 variant:
IHU!?

• Researchers say that it contains 46 mutations — even more than Omicron — which makes it more resistant to vaccines and infectious.
• Some 12 cases have been spotted so far near Marseille, with the first linked to travel to the African country Cameroon.
• Tests show the strain carries the N501Y mutation — first seen on the Alpha variant — that experts believe can make it more transmissible
• According to the scientists, it also carries the E484K mutation, which could mean that the IHU variant will be more resistant to vaccines.
• It is yet to be spotted in other countries or labelled a variant under investigation by the World Health Organization.

WHO Incident Manager Abdi Mahamud says studies point to the Omicron variant infecting upper part of the body, rather than lungs.

A World Health Organization (WHO) official has said evidence is growing that the Omicron variant of the coronavirus is affecting the upper respiratory tract, which results in milder symptoms than previous strains.

“We are seeing more and more studies pointing out that Omicron is infecting the upper part of the body. Unlike the other ones, that could cause severe pneumonia,” WHO Incident Manager Abdi Mahamud told a media briefing in Geneva.

While hailing the potentially “good news”, Mahamud stressed that Omicron’s high transmissibility means it will become dominant within weeks in many places – thus posing a threat in countries where a high portion of the population remains unvaccinated.

His remarks on the reduced risks of severe disease chime with other data, including a recent study from South Africa. However, Mahamud also sounded a note of caution, calling the country an “outlier” since it has a young population among other factors.

Asked about whether an Omicron-specific vaccine was needed, Mahamud said it was too early to say but noted the decision required global coordination and should not be left to the commercial sector to decide alone.

A recent study, which is yet to be peer reviewed, showed that when compared with both Delta and the original coronavirus, the Omicron variant was quicker at getting into the upper airways and lungs, but much slower at infiltrating the lung tissue itself.

A combined United States and Japanese study – still under peer review – found that rodents that were infected with Omicron had less lung damage, lost less weight and were less likely to die than those infected with Delta.

The US reported nearly 1 million new coronavirus infections on Monday, the highest daily tally any country has seen in the world. The cases are nearly double the previous US peak that was set a week back with the spread of the highly contagious Omicron variant.

President Joe Biden urged concern, not alarm as he emphasised that vaccines, booster shots and therapeutic drugs have lessened the danger for the overwhelming majority of Americans who are fully vaccinated.

Meanwhile, Texas officials on Tuesday indicated that about 40 per cent of its Army National Guard members are refusing to inoculate themselves against Covid in the latest challenge to the Biden administration order which requires all members of the military to get jabbed.

In the UK, prime minister Boris Johnson has said he will stand by the implementation of Plan B restrictions currently in force in England despite the UK recording a further 218,724 cases of Covid on Tuesday. The prime minister also announced that 100,000 critical workers would be given rapid tests for the virus every day.

Speaking to a virtual Downing St press conference, he said:
Anyone who thinks our battle with Covid is over is profoundly wrong.
This is a moment for the utmost caution.

Prior to the latest worrying developments sparked by Omicron, Mr Johnson’s government had been deeply reluctant to reimpose restrictions at all, despite consistently high case numbers.

While the vaccines have consistently kept death rates low since the spring, infection levels have remained consistently high, typically hovering around the 40,000-per-day mark but in recent days have been more than double that.

Mr Johnson may also be concerned that further restrictions might lead to social disorder, having seen anti-lockdown protests - some of them violent - erupt in Austria, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Denmark, Italy and Croatia...
