Casual and sports footwear maker Xidelang Holdings Ltd is going to venture into the manufacturing of washable and reusable face masks in collaboration with Fujian BiTiChong Baby Products Co Ltd (FBBP). Both parties inked a collaboration agreement on April 13. Xidelang said it will use its existing shoes (if so required) and garments production lines for the new venture.

SCGM’s share price has been on an upward trajectory partly on account of brisk orders for its face mask products. Its plastic packaging facilitate are also currently running at higher capacity utilization levels as demand for packed and baked food surges amid the heightening Covid-19 cases globally. We revise our FY21-23 earnings estimates higher by about 14% as we raise our margin assumptions given average selling price (ASP) hikes across ~40% of its F&B packaging products. We also peg a higher PER of 25x to FY22 EPS, raising our TP from RM2.55 to RM3.33. Our Outperform call is maintained.

Back in 2018, SCGM was in Tong’s value investing portfolio (theEdge). He bought scgm at an average RM1.75 and decided to cut loss at RM0.85 in July 2019, losing 50% following a string of disappointing quarter results. Since then, sales has grown but profits did not grow in tandem due to higher resin price, increase in depreciation and finance cost and jump in tax cost (due to deferred tax liabilities on new machinery and new kulai plant).

Those hiccups were temporary. The disposable food packaging industry is one of the beneficiaries of the covid19 outbreak. scgm’s healthcare venture is an additional bonus for the investors.

It may be compulsory for the public to wear face masks when they leave their homes.

"But masks must be made available to the needy first. Everyone must have excess to a face mask," Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said at an engagement session with the media on Wednesday.

The authorities have already announced that face masks will be compulsory at public and crowded areas from Aug 1.
