Investors were spooked by the outlook for the software and training service provider, now that its second-largest revenue contributor is no more. For context, about 43% or RM78.33mil of the group’s total revenue in the first nine months of the financial year 2018 ended Sept 30 was contributed by SKIN.

However, a source close to the management told StarBiz that Prestariang had “little to worry”, as the company would likely gain all future earnings of SKIN as its compensation. This was due to the existence of an exit clause in the contract signed under the previous Barisan administration, he claimed.

“The management had previously mentioned in closed-door discussions that the government would be liable to compensate the entire future earnings or the contract value of RM3.5bil if it revoked the contract.

“This would protect Prestariang against the recent decision by the Home Ministry to cancel the border control project. Imagine this, isn’t it better for the company if it receives all future earnings in one lump-sum payment rather than working for it for a period of 15 years?” said the source.

Analysts viewed the cancellation of SKIN as a bad sign for Prestariang’s future prospects.

“If the value of SKIN is removed, Prestariang’s share price is possibly worth less than 20 sen. I expect the stock to take a further beating, going forward,” said an analyst who did not want to be named.

According to him, the cancellation of SKIN means that the burden to drive revenue falls more strongly on Prestariang’s core businesses such as software distribution, training and certification.

“However, the earnings contribution from these businesses has been thinning. Prestariang’s wholly owned University Malaysia of Computer Science and Engineering (UniMy) continues to bleed financially. Overall, I do not see many upside catalysts,” he said.
