Every year at the beginning of the year, investment banks would recommend some stocks which they think would out-perform the market. Maybank, Public Bank, CIMB, TM, Tenaga, Digi, Axiata, Sime, AirAsia etc, the same ones are always on the lists. Nothing wrong with the recommendations as most of them would do well I believe. But the problems of these recommendations are:
1. Almost every investment bank is recommending the same companies, is there any chance that they would earn extra-ordinary return as everyone is chasing the same stocks?
2. Nearly all funds, local or foreign own them because of the liquidity which is good. But if every fund has to own them, won’t the price been chased up long ago to its intrinsic value?
3. Is there any conflict of interest with the investment banks who have funds holding these stocks, or have business dealing with the companies recommending these stocks?
4. Most companies recommended are big capitalized companies. What is the potential of high growth in order to achieve high return in the future?
5. These stocks are well known by everybody in the market, the institutions and retail players. What is the chance that they are selling at bargain price, and hence the chance of high return?
Do you have any hidden gem which is tucked in some where undiscovered, unloved and institutional investors have no mandate or interest to buy them for the time being, and selling at bargain price. The chance to earn 50% return a year, a double bagger, five baggers or even ten baggers. An ugly duckling which would turn to a beautiful swan in the near future? Which one and why?
kccongnz just to let you know.. when you advice people to buy a stock.. dont hide when it is down OK.. be here.. to advice people to buy it... because one should buy stocks when they are down not up.. simple.. so dont cheat people and pretend to know anything OK.. go back to when KFIMA was down.. and see for yourself OK.. were you there to say it is a good share.. or was i there alone..
Melvin, why MHC? I don't know anything about it. Tell me the story behind and see if it is worth take a deeper look. Seriously I am only a small retail investor. My knowledge is limited. You can see even if I know the company well, I may not get it right, especially the price part, and especially in the short term. But don't blame me, that is the inherent nature of the capital market.

Hidden GEM to me should be PETRONM, no doubt about that. Just do your studies and research carefully on this company. I trust all are seasoned investors here, no need for long winded explanation.
I initiated this thread for the purpose of sharing hidden gems in the Bursa, hopefully everybody who is interested can benefit. I aim to talk about fundamentals and value, then only if the present price presents value. I am glad that this thread achieve its intention if you can check back on some of the recommendations by some and take a closer look at them. I never ask people to buy or sell for the simple reason that you can be wrong and it often happen that your price call will be wrong. No, I never have the intention of asking people to boost about now much they made from buying which share, and provide opportunity for people to ridicule others for making bad calls and act like a mad dog talking about craps.
datuk, excellent post. Just one question about your second point. If the institution fund is already a top 30 shareholders, will it be still a hidden gem? I mean, wouldn't the price has almost reflected its value?
KC......if you have done your research well.....you won't be surprised by the mistake made by the so called institutional players. Also.....no one could predit the industry reccession accurately or the factors outlined in my write up above....
Take for instance......KPS.......ingress, Kfima, alam martini....all showing the same..
UEMLand is a stock involved with iskandar.. it had great prospects.. however it has already risen.. now it is a bit high.. if you mean the sense that it will rise due to some political reason.. then maybe.. but again there are many stocks in the market that can perform better with better backing.. if you are interested in investing in property counters. i recommend... UAODEV Paramon DAIMAN and reits.. these rest maybe mrcb and tebrau teguh.. so UEMLand maybe for a quick ride but for a medium to long term investment with potential returns like dividends. i would think otherwise.. Anyhow thanks for the thought.. cheers...
Take for instance....asset theme....the value of its asset is yet to revalue or realize.....Daiman......NTA is about rm5....but the real value of its NTA is more than rm20..........most asset is located in sri iskandar......

datuk, i would like to take the opportunity here to clarify something here. No I can't do my so called research well enough. Heck I a just a small retail investor living far away from home trying to invest in Bursa. How much thing i can get besides all published available information from Bursa?
Are you saying that institutional investors are not in the hidden gem companies yet as "they made mistake" of not knowing the good intrinsic value of the hidden gem? Because if they are in already, that they didn't make any mistake, did they? And as I said the price would have been almost reflected its intrinsic value already, won't they?
THis is the perfect timing to describe the cyclical stock....steel stock.....as long as you are in this industry.....inevitable....the performance is either in red...or profit in dropping trend.....sure follow by the drop in price......the seed for the formation of hidden gems has been laying down......and .......
This book is the result of the author's many years of experience and observation throughout his 26 years in the stockbroking industry. It was written for general public to learn to invest based on facts and not on fantasies or hearsay....
