KUALA LUMPUR: The Unity Government Agreement signed yesterday will maintain the country's political stability by ensuring that the government, led by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, lasts for five years, said DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang.

"I congratulate the prime minister, (Datuk Seri) Anwar Ibrahim for the unity government agreement signed by political coalitions, parties and individual members of parliament.

"It will not only ensure that this government can last five years and solidify political stability for the country, but is the basis for Malaysia to stop its national decline and to become a world-class nation before Malaysia's centennial anniversary."

The former parliamentary opposition leader said the agreement will provide a reset for nation-building policies and a return to the nation-building principles as advocated by the first four Umno presidents and the nation's founding fathers like Datuk Onn Jaafar, Tunku Abdul Rahman, Tun Abdul Razak Hussein, Tun Hussein Onn, Tun Tan Cheng Lock, Tun Tan Siew Sin, Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu, and Tun V.T. Sambanthan.

Lim added that the agreement is also in line with what is enshrined in Malaysia's constitution and the Rukun Negara concerning constitutional monarchy, parliamentary democracy, separation of powers, Islam as the official religion of the country, rule of law, good governance, public integrity, meritocracy and respect for human rights.

"Let this agreement be an inspiration to every patriotic Malaysian, political coalition and political party inside and outside of Parliament, that we can work with one common mission and purpose - to make Malaysia great again and fulfill the aspiration of 'Bapa Malaysia', Tunku Abdul Rahman for this country to be 'a beacon of light in a difficult and distracted world'".

"This is work not of one prime minister or in one general election, as it must be the mission of many prime ministers and many general elections and should be the Malaysian Dream of every citizen in this country for the next three to four decades.

"Let Malaysia start now under the leadership of the country's 10th prime minister, (Datuk Seri) Anwar Ibrahim and begin the long process to make Malaysia great again."

Lim also called for Malaysia to be among the great world-class nations where there is minimal corruption, a tiger economy, world-class education standards and a sustainable environment that will allow the country to showcase itself as the confluence of four great civilisations - Malay, Chinese, Indian, and Western.

He also agreed with the Conference of Rulers that the Judicial Appointments Committee should be free of influence from the prime minister.

To this extent, he said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azlina Othman Said has initiated the first step to separate the public prosecutor's office from the Attorney-General's Chambers.

The former Iskandar Puteri MP also urged the government to study the call by Sahabat Alam Malaysia for a Royal Commission of Inquiry into the worst landslide disaster in Batang Kali, as well as the larger question of risks arising from climate change.
