The State of the Nation: Investments in water need to keep pace with influx of data centres

https://theedgemalaysia.com/node/718243

I am going to be honest with you. Data centres are not environmentally sustainable,” admits an investor, who is setting up a data centre in Selangor. “And the only reason people come to Malaysia to invest is that Singapore doesn’t want data centres anymore.”

Malaysia has seen an influx of data centre investments over the last three years, coinciding with Singapore’s moratorium on the energy-guzzling boxes between 2019 and 2022. The moratorium was lifted last year.

Between 2021 and 2023, data centre investments approved by the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (Miti) totalled RM114.7 billion, making up 79% of total approved digital investments during that period.

The influx is pushing Malaysia into becoming the region’s new data centre hub, catching up with Singapore.

One factor that could throw a spanner in the works, however, is water.

...............

Data from RSAJ shows that it has received applications for 439.67MLD of water between 2024 and 2035 from data centres. Of this amount, 316.38MLD have been supported, while the remaining 30.51MLD have yet to be supported by the water operator.

Holistic approach to developing data centres

https://www.thestar.com.my/business/business-news/2024/07/13/holistic-approach-to-developing-data-centres

“Firstly, data centre operation consumes a lot of power and water. A lot of companies decided to choose Malaysia as the destination because of our relatively affordable electricity and water tariff.

“In addition, our power and water supply is relatively stable compared to many developing countries in the region.

“However, with the existing and incoming data centres, we need to ask how sustainable is our capacity to supply undisrupted power and water to these data centres without compromising other sectors such as the commercial, residential, medical and/or manufacturing segments.”

Wee Tiam says there needs to be plenty of “planning ahead” when it comes to setting up a data centre.

“Do we plan for the future in terms of sufficient power generation and comprehensive network coverage? Do we plan for sufficient water reservoirs/storage and treatment plants to cater to the sudden surge in usage?

liquid cooling is a technology where coolant is used as a intermediary medium to takeaway heat from DC and then pumped to heat exchanger to transfer back the heat to water.....

water is the greatest heat remover with the cheapest capital investment and operational cost

the pouring investment of DC at Johor in the first place is because of cheap water source

Great thing about Ranhill is that...its actually selling its water to international market (USD) by supplying to DC.

The weak MYR coupled with cheapest water price in the region shows how big the potential is....Singapore DC market will all move to Johor.

'our network and channels have been built over three decades and it will be very tough for any new entrants to come in over the short term' - Mr. Soong

Venturing into power solutions market

As data centres have become more critical to the operations of businesses and organisations, the demand for reliable and continuous power supply has also increased.

On March 22, VSTECS announced that the group was authorised to distribute Schneider Electric’s uninterruptible power supply (UPS) devices, sold under its flagship brand, APC, an industry leader in physical infrastructure and software solutions.

Soong highlights that power solutions and UPS are important and represent a significant market in the data centre industry.

“This year, we will be entering the power solutions market. This is highly complementary to the core offerings of VSTECS’ enterprise systems segment, where our clients require a reliable and uninterrupted power supply to ensure continuous operation of their mission-critical IT infrastructure,” he stresses.

For the longest time, says Soong, VSTECS never supplied power-related products to its customers, whereas the UPS systems and equipment manufacturers had been selling their products through the electric power distributors.

“But now, VSTECS will be going into this space from the IT perspective. We have close to 5,000 resellers, about 2,000 of which are systems integrators, which have been supplying IT equipment for servers and storage. It will be very synergistic if we could ask them to sell UPS products as well because they are serving the same customer base anyway,” he points out.

On top of UPS, VSTECS will also be covering the renewable energy (RE) and electric vehicle (EV) charging businesses in the power solutions space.

“VSTECS also wishes to play a role in the RE space. Today, data centres around the world are consuming huge amounts of electricity. There are many hyperscalers investing in data centre infrastructure in Malaysia and this is where we see the opportunity,” Soong says.

As regional data centres are expected to flock to Malaysia in a big way, Soong says other than supplying the ICT products and offering enterprise systems to its customers, the group also intends to sell power solutions and green energy products.

“We could help data centres measure their power usage and we could offer intelligent green solutions such as portioning out certain parts to RE. We could also install solar panels on the roof of data centres to capture the power for daily consumption, which could help them save on their electricity bills, or to store the energy in the UPS, which is essentially a battery backup,” he notes.

In a nutshell, says Soong, VSTECS’ smart power supply solutions could help data centres go greener. “We also expect that in the coming years, everybody will need an EV charger at home. We believe EV chargers are the next big thing. It will become a consumer product.”

i was wondering earlier why we humans have one thing very distinct from apes physiology despite evolving very recently from the same ancestors.....relative to apes our body hair had diminished with humans ability to cushion themself with skins of animals as clothing but the amount hair on the head and length it grows is exceptionally different! but why?

Its because we need so much capacity to cool down the brain (through sweat and evaporation using the large surface area from hair) and to protect from direct sunlight (overheating)

The same applies to the Data Center...the more the brain capacity, the greater the heat generated and cooling need.

The world is heading towards making a lot of Digital Brain in Johor basically....

That represents a 34 percent jump over the year before, with generative AI workloads believed to be at least partially to blame.

In its report, Google said that its data centers consumed 19.5 million cubic meters of water last year, up 20 percent.

The Secret Cost of Google’s Data Centers: Billions of Gallons of Water to Cool Servers

https://time.com/5814276/google-data-centers-water/

A few weeks earlier in nearby Mesa, Google proposed a plan for a giant data center among the cacti and tumbleweeds. The town is a founding member of the Arizona Municipal Water Users Association, but water conservation took a back seat in the deal it struck with the largest U.S. internet company. Google is guaranteed 1 million gallons a day to cool the data center, and up to 4 million gallons a day if it hits project milestones. If that was a pyramid of water jugs, it would tower thousands of feet into Arizona’s cloudless sky.

Alphabet’s Google is building more data centers across the U.S. to power online searches, web advertising and cloud services. The company has boasted for years that these huge computer-filled warehouses are energy efficient and environmentally friendly. But there’s a cost that the company tries to keep secret. These facilities use billions of gallons of water, sometimes in dry areas that are struggling to conserve this limited public resource.

“Data centers are expanding, they’re going everywhere. They need to be built in a way that ensures they are not taking critical resources away from water-scarce communities,” said Gary Cook, global climate campaigns director at Stand.earth, an environmental advocacy group.

Google considers its water use a proprietary trade secret and bars even public officials from disclosing the company’s consumption. But information has leaked out, sometimes through legal battles with local utilities and conservation groups. In 2019 alone, Google requested, or was granted, more than 2.3 billion gallons of water for data centers in three different states, according to public records posted online and legal filings.
