So why is it not possible that there could be higher intelligent beings? The other surfaces itself is dynamics, tectonic plates moving, some go down, some go up. Earth quakes, lava, these can wiped out the surface evidence. In fact the plates are still moving, just that no beings had survived long enough to tell the stories.
