kcchongnz,I consider myself a newbie, having only seriously investing for a little over a year. I have no financial knowledge and no time to watch over the eggs.
In fact, I am probably the simplest of all investors. First grade school compared to all the other sifus here.
If I can do it, then I think anyone can do it.

One of the reason I decided to do the investing myself was the erratic performance of the unit trusts. One year it would perform well and the next it would be in the bottom half while extracting a certain percentage of the fund value for themselves.
I am sure it is not easy to continue that kind of performance, but rather than let the managers play with my money, I would rather invest myself.
After all I don't believe in diversification anyway.

Foreign funds /conglomerates would love to see continuity in the government as the system is already in place and they know exactly what to do to get projects / contracts (which button to push and where, who to grease etc). yes it is greasy alright.

another rule: stay away from GLCs. They might just use your money to bail out some sons, daughters or inlaws of somebody, buying poor assets at premium price.

One of my rules of investing: stay away from companies known to be run by people with names starting with 'syed' or 'tan'.

A compounded annual return of 10-12% will include those Holland stocks as well. There are numerous Holland stocks.
To keep it simple, just avoid the Holland stocks and we should do much better. A very simple and effective rule.

Gosh, was away for a few days and rlch called me a liar.
Let me clarify:
1. I like Skpres but I do not have a single share of this company. Not yet anyway.
2. I am sure cheetah has business somewhere else but certainly not at the retail counter here. Maybe they have bulk contracts. It must be making money, but I don't buy shares which bothers me somehow.
The analysis and input that I have read here is awesome. Will really need time to comb through them. Thank you everybody.

I like skpres. It fulfills what I like to see in a company. Growth, low PE with good dividends. But I don't really understand the business well. If I am not mistaken it is dependent on a few big clients. The warrants bother me as well. I am not a financial/investment guy and my worries may seem naive/simplistic to some. I use only commonsense in my investing.
As for cheetah I don't see anyone buying their products at the local department store. Again commonsense.

Maybe as a conservative GARP investor I should have a detailed look at the counter. I tend to shun construction company as I did not have a very good experience with another one. Tend to invest in companies with business I can see like padini & Aeon credit.

Ok, maybe not exactly downward trend all the way, just the revenue. From 52 mil to 44mil for the quarter ending Sept 2012. There was a small rise along the way but generally down.
Income , eps is going upwards for the past 3 quarters though.
So they must be getting more and more efficient, less sales but more income. That is really good.
Of course there must be some good reason for the decreasing revenue and some good forecasts and proposals for the years ahead.

Everything about Pintaras looks good, until you look at the downward trend of the past 4 quarters.
I will pass.

They will not shut down the casino, but will post some hajis to make sure the muslims, both local and foreign cannot go in. I think they are pragmatic enough to realise that if they started imposing their laws on the non muslims then there will be lots of kites for them to fly next time.

I usually spend less than 10 minutes researching a stock. I don't spend any money on super software (google is the best). I don't lose sleep over Dow, Nikkei, Europe etc. That's minimal effort.
BTW online brokerage charges are usually less than RM 10 per transaction. That's cheaper than unit trust charges.
I go against the common unit trust idiocy of diversification. Diversification is just a method by the fund managers to cover their own weaknesses.

Unit trusts are rubbish, trust me. I was fooled once by their seemingly professional approach, know all attitude and glossy prospectus.
But since last year, my own investments has gained more than 50%(with minimal effort) while the unit trust in the hands of so called professionals has gone into the red.
I am in the process of pulling them all out.
Lesson learned.

If you gain in the market and you believe it is due to your good luck, then I think you are / will be in trouble.
I only invested in 3 counters, with gains between 10 to 100%. All investments were made with common sense and observations.
Luck it is not. Intelligence it is not.
Just common sense.

Buy and hold good AND growing companies is the only way. There are only a handful of them.
Sure their prices may go up and go down, but i don't care and i don't panic. Many times i don't even know about the fluctuations until much later.
But in the long run it has been rewarding.

All malaysians have significant overseas investments as well as investments in luxury goods ( diamonds, berkins) being held in trust by others. Held in trust as in 'pagar' and 'padi'
That is why we are definitely on track.

We should feel proud to know that every income tax paying malaysians has a part in some key assets overseas, as well as many Diamonds and Berkin bags which we alone cannot afford.
These assets and luxuries are currently being held in 'TRUST' by some people, but we ordinary Malaysians contributed to it.
Am I proud to be Malaysian!

Picking winning stocks is very simple actually, using the available data available on the internet. No hard formulas or equations needed.
It is the discipline that is hard. It is the belief in yourself when the market plunge that is hard.
Like what Lynch said, the key organ is the stomach.

Imagine a GLUTTON who goes to a 'all you can eat' restaurant which closes at 10 pm. When do you think the glutton will leave the restaurant? 8pm? 9 pm?
There you are. GE in April 2013.

khorlh9909, I believe what Soros said was true. Investment is boring. If it is exciting, then something is wrong. Your account should be steadily increasing in value in a very boring way.
