Carter said the Taliban were essentially "country boys" who lived by the so called "Pashtunwali", the traditional tribal way of life and code of conduct of the Pashtun people.

Taliban is like CCP at that time everyone afraid of communism but look what happen to China under CCP rule.

Taliban is Pashtun people holding islamic idealogy but remember China is now Socialism with Chinese characteristics. Communism idealogy by name only.

The Taliban wiped off Opium in Afghanistan.

so the US came...
and with US help...
Afghanistan again became the World No. 1 Exporter of Opium.

Drug Lords are now celebrating coz the expected shortage of opium and heroin in world markets will most likely push up drugs prices.

Its just like OPEC.
