As @linges mentioned, most people started new by punting speculative high beta stocks.....
....and after got burnt a few times and as they get older, they will slowly switch to lower beta blue chips....
....that's where rich uncles and aunties park their money :)

@stkoay, currently 70% stuck at EPF. I'll keep pumping in for next 2-3 years. switching portfolio instead of holding too much liquidity. waiting to capitalise on EPF free annual dividends. As long as I withdraw less than my annual dividends, my EPF should keep on increasing. FYI, am now semi retired (not by choice) and will reach official retirement in a few years time. Hence why less in riskier investments for me. In case anyone wondering, our EPF is currently one of the best managed funds in the world. if the government continue to leave it alone and not interfere in their investments, members will also be good when they retire. Manny like me no choice but need to think out of the box for cashflow liquidity as very soon will soon be unable to find meaningful employment. The government isnt going to help you unfortunately.

For EPF idea, just sharing with fellow Harimau investors only. All it takes is some caring and sharing and we all reap the benefits together. Stay strong, invest smarter and prosper together.

@stkoay, '...bullets to top up when there's sharp correction. A very safe investment strategy. ...'

like last dividend, before ex-date it was last traded at 8.74. I parked my funds at 8.44 for next day expecting it to drop 30 sens before increasing back so try luck to get at the price. of course we all know that it when further down to 8.34. reason why i didn't buy prior to ex-date was because I didn't was to buy at so high a price just to get the dividend and increase my overall average price, for me at least every increase in average price will reduce my buffer should Harimau again drop very low down to below RM8 and I want to plan my 'exit' before then.. additionally, when you buy low, you will also gain when price will go up again eventually .... like now. so its a safer bet for me...

Nobody can tell if another similar catastrophic event or global recession will happen again in future. No one foresaw Germany entered technical recession last 3 weeks. Now the media are saying the same about to happen to Europe too (https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/international/business/eurozone-in-recession-at-start-of-2023/articleshow/100848910.cms). maybe am playing too safe as an investor but when your life savings at stake better safe than sorry

@happybuying in addition to just pure Dividends, consider taking up their DRIP when the chance arises. it will pay off handsomely in future too. Nothing beats FREE shares. It lowers your average holding price too! This tip I learn from brother @stkoay

Posted by happybuying > 2023-06-20 16:16 | Report Abuse

@jeffchan1901 Thanks for sharing. I did go for RHB DRP. Now it is boring as next dividend payout is Sep/Oct.. No extra cash to top-up...not too happy now..haha

@happybuying depends what is your long term strategy. being a day trader or valued dividend stock investor. calculate your possible annual DY for each stock. whichever gives you the possible higher yield based on the average dividend returns annual ideally should be your choice. on this note, if u managed to buy stock low at low price and enjoy the 'paper gain' and high DY consider your luck. if one chooses to be a day trader, one better be day trading in HUGE volumes. otherwise it's only a waste of your time and cause you to be stressed just to make a quick buck. if day trading is your cup of tea, then if you see the same few old foggies here enjoying their yield and steady income stream, dont ask why they have what they have and what they did the things they do to enjoy where they are now.... peace

Thanks for the advice. My intention is still holding both Maybank and RHB. Just that I took the opportunity to buy RHB at 5.39, which reduce my average cost. Currently, my RHB average price is still 5.56, down from 5.59. I still have about 35K of Maybank, only sold 2300 today at 8.72, and use this money to buy RHB. Not sure if this is wise

Posted by happybuying > 2023-06-21 17:03 | Report Abuse

my average price for maybank is 8.68, so at today closing, I make some paper gain

Posted by happybuying > 2023-06-21 17:23 | Report Abuse

Maybank today gain +0.09, CIMB +0.11, PBB +0.03, RHB +0.00, so, I am buying into RHB and my holding of RHB is now over 21K, after adding 3K today. Hoping that RHB one day will return to 5.70. prey..prey

@happybuying another tip which I have shared before with the Harimau fans here last time is that I do not average down just to make it dropped a few sens (which in your case for RHB is only 0.03) this is because you sacrifice possible Maybank dividend of rm1160 i.e. average dividend 0.58 * 2000 in order to average down only 0.03 sens for RHB. worth it? - only you can decide. for me if i want to average down, i make sure that when I average down the price different is at least 5-10 sens depending on the amount i spend (depending on the share price) or i can feel the impact. . if i invest least then 5k to average down 5 sens it is worth it, if i spend 15k-20k it better be at least 10 sens otherwise i would be committing more funds in the counter which may drop further. ever heard of some investors and their 'falling knife' theory? no? its okay, we all live and learn eventually. what would kill you will hopefully make you stronger. day trading is very stressful as you need to monitor daily. question is do you have the stomach to enjoy the roller coaster? for stkoay and myself at this moment we are sitting back enjoying our glass of ice tea and chilling out in the sidelines while we wait for August announcement ;-)

Posted by happybuying > 2023-06-22 09:28 | Report Abuse

Thanks @jeffchan1901 for your tips and sharing. Appreciate that, save a lot of expensive lessons. btw, Maybank Dividends in August?

Posted by happybuying > 2023-06-22 09:57 | Report Abuse

on second thought, i switch from Maybank to RHB. so instead of missing 2,000 x 0.58 (RM1,160), I would be getting from RHB 3,000 x 0.40 = RM1,200, I am actually not losing out of my dividends.

@stkoay you are right. when I heard RHB skyrocketing I was tempted to buy last year but I knew I was too late. also.noticed how RHB you only last 2 years was 40 sens? before that dovidend consistently between 15 to 20 sens. i didnt have time to dig deeper but i sudpect could be n extraordinary event that triggered the sudden surge in dividend payoutwas already

@jeffchan1901, RHB is cheap in term of valuation...but the stock hardly moves.
I bought it at 4.60 in September 2020, not much profit.
CIMB n Maybank would have been a better buy at that time.
May be it's because it's a mid cap, when institution buy, they gave priority to big cap like MBB and CIMB.

jeffchan1901

@stkoay from my preliminary findings, seems that RHB which usually pays out 30% as dividend has since the last 2 years revised pay out 50% after 2022 strong performance (ROCE 9.7%) as dividend resulting in DY of between 6% to 7% for that counter hence that is why the stock has been so popular and 2023 and 2024 (RHB expect ROCE at 11.5%) they are also expected to continue with this generous pay out too until next year at least (news reported in Feb 2023). But like you said, is it too late to enter now since market would have probably priced in the expected upcoming earnings and adjusted accordingly.

anyway, wish @happybuying the best in his search for the portfolio that fits his play style.

@speakup not just Radium. IPOs are now not a sure fire way to make a quick buck any more. case in point some IPOs are over valued based on the perceive future value and promising future but if doesn't deliver the results (FY2023) will also fall - see FFB, Farm Fresh Bhd, from IPO offer price of 1.35, and dropped as much as 1.28 on 9/6/23. my feeling is that it is not a good time to invest in IPO as its like gambling. unless you apply get it and sell on opening bell to make a quick buck. I applied for CTOS IPO when it was offered at 1.10 and advice by my remisier to sell and not hold on to it. sold at 1.62 few days later and got a nice change. although it did eventually peaked at 2.06 the next 2 days.. oh well.. at least i got something. price now 1.40 due to not so rosy outlook for counter by analysts.
