Poor mgmt,Catering contracts, overstaffing, productivity, unprofitable practices if any such minumum no of staff per plane, longer reporting line than necessary, big title with big fat salary n benefits, excessive power of the union with its costly demand etc caused the mas to fail miserably in the past. If mas to revive, then all these issues must be overcome :)

the union is ruining themselves too, if mas is unprofitable, then no bonus, etc etc.... if excess staff need to leave, then let it be... everyone will win in the end.. unprofitable practices such as minimum of staff per plane, no multi-tasking (if any) such as air steward/stewardess must help to clean the toilet etc etc would incur more cost, unnecessary long reporting line with big title & big fat salaries & benefits would also eat into mas's profit, etc... uncompetitive contracts, purchase price & terms, all these must be reviewed.... etc etc .... hope they could see light at the end of the tunnel... otherwise, tax payers' money will wasted continuously.:)

Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) director-general Azharuddin Abdul Rahman stunned participants at an aviation conference this morning after he abruptly asked the media to leave the hall halfway through his speech.

An awkward silence fell at the opening of International Air Transport Association (Iata) Ops Conference as a stressed-looking Azharuddin refused to continue his speech after he realised the media was present, reported The Star.

"I'm sorry, is there any media here? I didn't know there are media here.

"I'm sorry, can I ask the media to stay out please?" he was quoted as saying at the conference at Sheraton Imperial Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.

Azharuddin was explaining the timeline for the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 and the ongoing search efforts but stopped some one minute into the speech.

He also refused to address the media when he left the conference after the speech.



Later, conference participant Tom Ballantyne was quoted as saying he was puzzled why Azharuddin had asked the media to leave the event.

"It was totally unnecessary. He didn't say anything that has not been reported over the past few weeks. His office was also told beforehand that the media would be here so I don't know why he suddenly stopped," he was quoted as saying.

He added Azharuddin had only told the audience about the ongoing search efforts for the missing aircraft.

The conference is intended to discuss issues related to safety, operations and infrastructure in the aviation industry.

Flight MH370 lost communication over the Gulf of Thailand on March 8 and subsequently altered to an unknown trajectory.

Investigators believe the aircraft "ended" in the Indian Ocean but have yet to find a piece of wreckage from the plane. - Mkini

PERVERSE as it may sound, there may be a silver lining to the MH370 incident for Malaysia Airlines in a renewed business recovery effort for the ailing carrier.

It appears that senior officials are looking at the catastrophe as a critical juncture to put the floundering airline back on track, and rightly so too.

For too long MAS has been seen in a negative light because of its not-too-positive finances that have resisted most efforts to put the airline back on its feet.

With MAS's image as a safe airline taking a battering with numerous questions on all aspects of operations aimed at its chief executive officer Ahmad Jauhari Yahya at press conferences daily, it could be time to start off on a clean slate.

Both Ahmad Jauhari and MAS chairman Tan Sri Md Nor Yusof are said to be in one mind on the matter despite the former just having a year left on his contract.

The CEO has also parried questions on whether he will step down in the wake of the crash.

Be that as it may, a turn-around for the national carrier is greatly needed to take it out of the hazy skies that it has been flying through for some time.

The crash could not have come at a worse time for MAS, which has been weighed down by its financial burden.

The airline's net loss widened to RM1.17 billion last year from RM432.59 million in 2012 even as the airline undertook cost-minimising measures.

An insider said the crash had "forced" senior management into thinking of taking up the matter with stakeholders on the premise that the incident provided new impetus for all to study ways of rejuvenating the carrier.

But senior management needs to sharpen its recovery plan so that stakeholders find it palatable and practical to implement.

Even as things seem moribund, senior management is looking ahead to the future with a view towards picking up the pieces and improving the bottomline to making the carrier a viable financial proposition.

MAS certainly has many of the essentials necessary for success in terms of staffing (its pilots are in demand in the region, standing equal to their counterparts in Singapore Airlines) and government backing (which can be seen both as a boon and a bane) and the willingness to rebuild the brand after the March 8 incident.

It is good that MAS has finally decoupled itself from the probe to embark on its own track of accounting on the crash.

After 20 days of pure concentration on the MH370 issue, its senior management needs to take a little time off to consider its future as a corporate entity.

Pakatan: Putrajaya To Blame For Local And International Scorn Over MH370


KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s handling of the MH370 crisis has not only invited scorn from international communities but also made it difficult even for fellow Malaysians to support Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his government, opposition MPs said today.

After being allegedly snubbed again from an official briefing on the search and recovery operation originally scheduled for tonight, the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) MPs said they will not settle for anything less than a briefing by a minister who has all the facts in hand.

“We feel not only sad, ashamed, but also angry about how so many mistakes and weaknesses could have happened,” DAP’s Lim Kit Siang told reporters in Parliament here.

“Everybody wants to give our utmost support in this tragedy, but these actions highlighted questions about our system’s incompetencies.”

The Gelang Patah MP said Malaysian authorities have gone through a series of blunders since the jetliner went missing, the latest being the conflicting last messages from the plane.

Malaysia’s civil aviation department said late yesterday the last words spoken by one of pilots of missing plane were “Good night Malaysian three seven zero”, and not the more casual “All right, good night” originally reported.

Malaysian authorities’ handling of the search has been heavily criticised by international communities, especially by Chinese relatives of those on board the missing plane, who accused the government of incompetence and even a cover-up.

In one show of this alleged incompetency, Deputy Defence Minister Datuk Abdul Rahim Bakri was recently forced to backtrack on a remark he made in Parliament on the air turnback by the missing jet.

The leader told the House that the military had initially assumed that a Malaysian jet detected on its radar on March 8 was ordered to turn back by air traffic controllers.

But shortly after, Abdul Rahim admitted that his remark was merely based on his own assumption, which was inaccurate.

Lim, however, said he believes otherwise.

“I believe what he said in the house was not his own opinion, but he was given information, he was given a briefing by government staff,” Lim claimed.

PKR’s Azmin Ali pointed out that Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim had promised a briefing on the crisis for PR MPs tonight, but it was no longer possible with the absence of Defence and Acting Transport Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein.

“This morning we received information that the minister had run off to Hawaii for another conference,” said Azmin, referring to Hishammuddin’s meet with his defence minister counterparts from Asean.

“I see that Barisan Nasional are the ones politicising the issue. They’re not serious in working with PR to find a solution for such an important issue.”

This comes as Lim pushed for a Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) on the incident to start three weeks from last Sunday, regardless whether the “black boxes” of the missing flight MH370 are found or not.

The opposition pact insisted again today for the PSC or Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) to be held soon so PR lawmakers can help out in the crisis.

Last Thursday, Shahidan insisted that Putrajaya will not set up a special parliamentary committee or a panel to conduct a royal inquiry into the missing Malaysian jet before the “black boxes” are found.

Shahidan stressed that the federal government’s top priority now was to find the Malaysia Airlines flight MH370’s flight data and cockpit voice recorders, key pieces that could unravel the puzzle over the plane’s fate.

On March 25, Acting Transport Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said he was not in a position to decide whether a PSC or Royal Commission of Inquiry should be formed to look into the disappearance of flight MH370.

Merdeka Centre Poll: Majority unhappy at government handling of MH370

Majority of Malaysians are unhappy at the manner in which the government is handling the Malaysia Airlines (MAS) Flight MH370 crisis, according to a survey by pollster Merdeka Center.

The survey found 50 percent of respondents to be dissatisfied at the crisis management, while 43 percent said they were satisfied.

The world's airline industry has rebounded from the recession and expects 2014 to be the most profitable year on record, thanks to stable fuel prices and growing travel demand.

If 2013 was the year of the world’s largest airline merger, then 2014 will be the year of the Wright Amendment.

The end of flight restrictions at Dallas Love Field will be among the top stories to watch in the local airline and aviation industry in 2014. Here’s what we’ll be watching.


The Wright Amendment

For 35 years, the Wright Amendment has restricted flights from Dallas Love Field to several nearby states. But starting in October, carriers can fly anywhere in the U.S. from Love. Southwest Airlines, which dominates the 20-gate airport, will likely alter its flight schedule to include trips to New York, Chicago and Los Angeles instead of flying a dozen times a day to Houston or San Antonio. Delta Air Lines has announced plans to add four cities to its operations at Love. But it remains to be seen how the changes will affect fares on competing flights at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport.


American merger

The deal is finally done and now the hard work begins to bring together American Airlines and US Airways. The airlines, which completed their merger in December, are combining two operations into the world’s largest carrier. US Airways is expected to drop out of United Airlines’ Star Alliance and join American’s Oneworld group in the first quarter. Customers will also be able to earn and burn frequent-flier miles on each airline this month. Most of the major technology integration is unlikely to happen until 2015, but the airline’s new leadership will need to tackle thousands of policies and processes this year.


New leader at DFW

After 19 years of Jeff Fegan’s steady leadership, DFW Airport has a new pilot at the helm. Former Virgin Australia executive Sean Donohue took over the top spot in late October and hasn’t made any significant changes yet. But in 2014, Donohue will face renewed competition from Love Field when the Wright Amendment ends and will try to keep cost overruns in check on the airport’s $2.3 billion terminal renovation project.


Cellphones on planes

The Federal Aviation Administration appears poised to allow fliers to make cellphone calls during flights. Several carriers, including Delta and Southwest, have publicly said they won’t allow cellphone use. But if the government does allow calls, it will be interesting to see which carriers let their travelers yak all they want.


Airline profits

2012 was a good year for airlines. 2013 was even better. Could 2014 be the best ever? The International Air Transport Association said it expects global airlines to earn a net profit of $19.7 billion in 2014 on revenue of $743 billion. If that occurs, it will be the largest profit for the airline industry, the association said. Passenger demand is expanding in the 5 to 6 percent range, and passengers are paying more in ancillary fees, which help boost revenue.

KUALA LUMPUR: If it was meant to happen, it will happen, despite all precautions taken.

That is the case with the Malaysian Airlines (MAS) Flight MH370 that went missing en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on March 8.

However, many among us have been so carried away by emotions and political interests that we misdirect our anger and come up with conspiracy theories.

Is not what is more important at this time solidarity, as the country is facing a challenge unlike any nation has before?

It is sad that there are Malaysians who even resort to attacking the credibility of MAS, one of the best airlines in the world.

Stop pointing fingers

Former flight attendant V. Priscilla Jayakanes, 34, said some Malaysians have unfairly rated the level of safety and security of national carrier Malaysia Airlines by basing it on the MH370 incident alone.

"All airline companies employ the same methods of training and will only recruit pilots who are highly experienced.

"It is unreasonable to blame MAS when we have yet to establish the fate of the plane. Accidents can happen anywhere, maybe at home or while on a car journey with loved ones. Are we going to leave the house or refuse to travel by car?" she reasoned.

Priscilla said it was only logical to continue life as usual and found no need to discuss ways to reinstate confidence in the national carrier.

"I think Malaysians need to be mature and rational when discussing this issue," she said.


Still a fan of MAS

Priscilla, who had 11 years of experience under her belt, said that the incident did not at all affect her faith in the national airline's credibility and would readily travel by MAS in the future.

University lecturer Kenneth Lee Tze Wui, 29, agreed and vowed continuing support for the flag carrier.

Twenty-eight-year-old Nor Saifullah Ramada Syahruddin acknowledged that the incident have affected the image of the national airline, but believed that Malaysians should continue to shower it with undivided support.

"Yes, the incident has hugely impacted MAS, but we, as Malaysians, have a responsibility to help rebuild its good reputation," he said.

He said what happened was unprecedented and hoped the issue would not be politicised, as doing so may hurt the feelings of many parties.


On resignation of MAS CEO

Sadly, the bizarre incident had not only been politicised, but recently, there were also attempts at pressuring MAS Chief Executive Officer Ahmad Jauhari Yahya to resign, in light of the MH370 incident.

Insurance adjuster Vishnu Morgan, 31, said fellow Malaysians should not be to quick to blame leaders but need to review the system itself.

"Asking him to resign at this stage of the incident is not a good idea. This is not the time to start anew with a new CEO," he said.

Vishnu, who flew by MAS at least thrice a year, also said he would continue with the airline, as it was still one of the best in the world.

Priscilla, meanwhile, believed that no one had the right to call for Ahmad Jauhari's resignation.

In addition to that, the latter was more acquainted with every effort and challenge presented during the course of unravelling the mystery of the missing airplane.

The Boeing 777-200ER jetliner carrying 227 passengers and 12 crew members, left the KL International Airport at 12.41am on March 8 and disappeared from radar screens about an hour later. It was to have landed in Beijing at 6.30am on the same day.

Seventeen days after its disappearance, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak on March 24, announced it "ended in the southern Indian Ocean" based on an unprecedented type of analysis of satellite data by the United Kingdom satellite telecommunications company Inmarsat and the UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch.

Kerajaan, MAS dan industri penerbangan negara ‘sakit’ (Bahagian 2)

Mungkin ia hanya satu kebetulan apabila saya menulis artikel bertajuk “Kerajaan, MAS dan industri penerbangan negara ‘sakit’ Bahagian 1” yang dikeluarkan di portal berita ini pada 6 Mac lalu, dua hari sebelum pesawat Sistem Penerbangan Malaysia (MAS) MH370, yang dalam penerbangan dari Kuala Lumpur ke Beijing hilang.

Kini, tumpuan seluruh dunia ke arah ke selatan Lautan Hindi ketika semua aset pertahanan serta perisikan tercanggih dunia giat melaksanakan operasi mencari dan menyelamat (SAR) pesawat MH370 yang hilang di kawasan berkenaan.



Ketika rakyat Malaysia serta waris keluarga 239 penumpang dan anak kapal MH370 masih berada dalam keadaan terkejut dilanda kesedihan akibat tragedi yang terus misteri serta tidak diduga itu, pelbagai implikasi serta kesan sudah pasti akan berlaku dalam industri penerbangan negara berikutan peristiwa berkenaan.

Apa yang pasti, “post” nahas MH370 akan memberikan kesan secara langsung kepada MAS, yang sebelum kejadian itu, melaporkan kerugian lebih RM1.7 bilion pertengahan Februari lalu untuk tahun kewangan 2013.

Sebagai syarikat penerbangan negara, dan dimiliki kerajaan melalui syarikat pelaburannya, Khazanah Nasional Bhd (Khazanah) pelbagai usaha dilakukan sejak 1998 bagi menyelamatkan syarikat ini, sesuai dengan statusnya sebagai “harta” milik Malaysia.

Namun timbul persoalan usaha serta pelan pemulihan MAS yang dilakukan Khazanah terus “memusnahkan” yang suatu ketika pernah dibeli dengan harga RM8 sesaham oleh tokoh korporat negara Tan Sri Tajuddin Ramli.

Masih ramai yang tidak lupa bahawa kerajaan menubuhkan Penerbangan Malaysia Berhad (PMB) dengan modal terbitan bernilai RM2 bilion untuk membeli pesawat-pesawat MAS yang kemudiannya dipajak kembali kepada MAS, dalam usaha mengasingkan pemilikan pesawat dan operasi yang dinamakan pelan penstrukturan WAU (Widespread Asset Unbundling) pada 202.

Melalui skim berkenaan, liabiliti MAS untuk membeli pesawat dipindahkan kepada PMB dan MAS dijangka akan terus untung kerana hanya menanggung kos operasi penerbangan sahaja.

Tidak sampai beberapa tahun, pelan pemulihan berkenaan gagal, dan PMB terkubur sehingga mengakibatkan kerajaan melalui Khazanah terpaksa menyerap semua kerugian yang dianggarkan bernilai berbilion ringgit.

Selepas mencatatkan kerugian mega pada tahun kewangan 2011 berjumlah lebih RM2 bilion, pemegang saham utama MAS melancarkan pelan penstrukturan MAS dengan melancarkan pembiayaan untuk syarikat penerbangan negara ini, yang berjaya menghasilkan dana sejumlah RM9 bilion.

Pelan pembiayaan untuk MAS itu, sebahagian besar dibiayai terbitan bon oleh Kumpulan Simpanan Pekerja (KWSP) dan Kumpulan Wang Amanah Pencen (KWAP), dua tabung amanah caruman rakyat yang bertujuan untuk menjaga kepentingan pada masa tua.

Malah pada ketika itu, terbitan “perpetual bon” untuk membiayai kos operasi dan bukannya untuk pembelian aset sehingga diwarwarkan sebagai suatu pembiayaan perniagaan yang inovatif khusus untuk menyelamatkan MAS.

Bagaimanapun, kerugian demi kerugian yang terus dicatatkan MAS walaupun mempunyai wang hasil pembiayaan daripada KWSP dan KWAP dan ia dapat disaksikan dengan penurunan harga saham syarikat berkenaan daripada RM1.35 sen kepada RM0.30 sebelum tragedi MH370.

Jadi, timbul persoalan dimanakah peranan Lembaga Pengarah KWSP dan KWAP, yang membenarkan wang pencarum digunakan untuk membiayai operasi MAS tetapi syarikat itu terus mencatatkan kerugian.

Lebih menghairankan alasan yang digunakan untuk menubuhkan PMB diketepikan apabila MAS kembali pesawat baru, seperti Airbus A380 yang berharga berbilion ringgit dan menggantikan pesawat lama.

Langkah berkenaan sebenarnya amat penting dalam memastikan syarikat penerbangan ini, terus dapat kekal bersaing dengan kompetitif dengan syarikat penerbangan antarabangsa lain.

Yang menghairankan saya, MAS tidak sepatutnya mencatatkan kerugian sebelum penstrukturan semula kerana susut nilai pesawat yang rendah tetapi dengan pembelian pesawat baru, susut nilai dijangka akan meningkat.

Selain itu, sejak kebelakangan ini, pengurusan MAS juga melancarkan perang harga demi survival bisnes mereka hingga menyebabkan syarikat penerbangan penuh ini, dilabelkan sebagai syarikat penerbangan murah.

Tindakan ini, jelas menjejaskan syarikat penerbangan tambang rendah seperti AirAsia dan Malindo Air sehingga ada tuduhan kerajaan tidak telus dengan menggalakkan persaingan antara sebuah syarikat penerbangan penuh serta syarikat penerbangan murah.

Sebenarnya, kerugian demi kerugian yang terus dicatatkan MAS walaupun menerima suntikan pembiayaan khas daripada kerajaan melalui KWSP dan KWAP ini, seakan mengulangi semula sejarah PMB yang akhirnya terpaksa

馬航主管業務的副總裁於上月27日與在京家屬溝通時,首度公開承認,MH370失事當天,馬航地面指揮中心曾兩次嘗試通過衛星電話呼叫MH370航班,但均未得到回應。他並未給出兩次呼叫的具體時間,也沒有提供衛星電話服務供應商的名稱。
週二下午在北京麗都飯店舉行的溝通會上,有家屬追問,馬方是否已對機上有無電話撥出展開調查。馬軍方代表對此回應稱,一個位於吉隆坡的調查委員會正在調查MH370從機場登機門推出後所發生的所有事情,目前已針對衛星電話的調查請求傳遞給這一委員會,待調查結束後,將由調查委員會向公眾公佈調查結果。
此前,馬航飛行主管阿末尼沙曾表示,雖然MH370航班上配備有衛星電話,但馬民航空管部門考慮到衛星電話不屬於有關程序規定的動作,同時飛機已移交胡志明空管區,便沒有動用衛星電話聯絡MH370。

Missing MH370: MAS adequately covered by insurance

PETALING JAYA - The cost of the search and rescue operation, as well as insurance matters related to the missing aircraft, are being handled by insurance brokers appointed by Malaysia Airlines.

The insurance companies will also pay for the accommodation of family members of the missing persons.

Even if the incident was the result of a terrorist attack, which is mere speculation at this point, MAS is adequately covered for all eventualities, said a source close to the matter.

US-based Willis Group Holdings is the insurance broker and the insurers comprise reputable companies in the aviation market, including Lloyd's.

The brokers and insurers have been working with MAS on every aspect of the cost issues since the aircraft went missing on March 8.

One factor that experts around the world warned about is that the search operation would be "costly and complicated".

It is the norm for airlines to insure their aircraft and the insurers will make sure the airlines keep the planes in good working condition.

MAS has a stringent aircraft maintenance and service policy.
