Hahaha, may continue drop until Friday. If repairing works is smoothly done by this Sunday, water supply should resume on Monday.

PAN Corporate Communications and Consumer Affairs Unit director Mohd Fazil Ismail reportedly said on Jan 5, that the commission has conducted a Tariff Setting Mechanism (TSM) study to ensure a fair tariff adjustment for both water companies and consumers, adding that the water tariffs adjustment is expected to take place this year.

Mohd Fazil said the expected average increase imposed on consumers would only be an additional RM3 to the monthly bill, which works out to be 10 sen per day.....

Remark: increase only RM 3 /month !!!???

PBA you make sure you maintain the water tariff increase to RM3 per month only per customer.

I stick to my target of RM2.50 for PBA which has not taken into account any potential tariff hike in 2024.

@hng33

Agree with you that some might have misinterpreted the statement and taken profit.

The statement:
"the expected average increase imposed on consumers would only be an additional RM3 to the monthly bill"

The keyword is "average". Another keyword is "expected".

How is the average calculated? For which usage bracket? Referring to average user? First 35,000 litres per month? Referring to which states?

Many states are applying for tariff increase. Penang, Kedah, Perak, Melaka, Johor, Selangor, etc.

If we use Selangor as an example then it's easier to understand.

Selangor current tariff structure:

0-20 cubic metres = RM0.57
>20-35 cubic metres = RM1.03
>35 cubic metres = RM2.00

So, if a resident in Selangor uses 30 cubic metres (30,000 litres) per month, the current water bill is RM21.70.
Hypothetically, if tariffs increase by about 15%, new tariff will look like

0-20 cubic metres = RM0.66
>20-35 cubic metres = RM1.19

New monthly water bill is RM25.10, difference of RM3.40

Penang current tariff structure is very low. For the FIRST TWO usage brackets
0-20 cubic metres = RM0.22
>20-40 cubic metres = RM0.46

A resident in Penang is currently paying a ridiculous RM9 for 30 cubic metres of monthly water usage.

Previously Penang was seeking tariff review for:
0-20 cubic metres = RM0.55
>20-35 cubic metres = RM1.10
>35 cubic metres = RM2.00

Based on this, the monthly bill would be RM22, difference of RM13.

This was the previous suggested tariff back in 2021. It could be even higher in 2024.

Other states that have much higher tariff than Penang are also applying for a review, like Selangor for example.

So, Penang would obviously get a much higher tariff increase as it currently has the lowest domesitc tariff among all states in Malaysia.

Also take note of what SPAN said previously in its annual report 2021 page 48: Only Pahang, Perlis and Penang are allowed to increase tariff by more than 30% because of their existing low rates. Other states limited to 30%.

But what if the tariff is lower

Posted by StartOfTheBull > 2024-01-10 06:28 | Report Abuse

If water tariff is lower then more people can afford to use water running hose to wash car.

The cost is really cheap, so it is fair to adjust a bit. But iguess wont be crazy

Posted by StartOfTheBull > 2024-01-10 14:31 | Report Abuse

No reason Penangites who enjoy higher income compare to other states cannot accept an average water tariff rise.

Worst case scenario +RM10 to water bill for B40 which is already very small chance to happen.
Again worst case scenario only husband working with RM1500 salary, what is the % of increase against salary?

RM10/RM1500 = 0.7%

Many Penang people earn more than RM1500

Examples:
Minimum salary class RM1500: Impact =10/1500 = 0.7%
M40 people RM5000: Impact = 10/5000 = 0.2%
T20 people RM10k salary: Impact = 10/10000 = 0.1%

Which one is worse... old pipe not replaced causing no water 1-2 days a year or pay extra 0.5% on average of your salary so that whole year can get water?

Seems like there will be an announcement of water tariff hike tomorrow: https://www.chinapress.com.my/?p=3769371. If PBA share price rises tomorrow, then it means that corporates should not be involved in CSR initiatives, assuming that the market is semi-strong form efficient: https://klse.i3investor.com/web/blog/detail/neohjiaen/2023-11-24-story-h-214216010-PBA_Holdings_Berhad_The_Aberration_Named_as_CSR

If announcement from SPAN is to implement on all states, then the largest impact will be on PBA. +22c for every 1,000 liter. PBA is now selling 32c per 1,000 liter, thats almost 69% up

FAQ released by SPAN confirmed that there will be ICPT mechanism for water operators: www.span.gov.my/document/upload/RXVrajDKL5HM2r0FgvKfLZPrg5ZKPcG1 (add .pdf). Water bills will be split into two parts: (1) base tariffs that are revised every three years; and (2) electricity surcharge/discount that is revised every year.

Population is perpetually increasing.

Clean treated WATER is as precious as clean air we breath in to live.
World experts said water is more precious than air,
bcos the water recourses r limited n finite!

in north america, their gov privatize all utility biz except water.
why? water is free as the raw material.
power utility is the worst. the cost of raw material in coal n n gas is ever increasing n
its ASP is not, as politikus must buy votes to stop tariff increase for multi yrs, like in msia.,.

water tariff must be allowed to increase every 3 years to preserve it.
bcos when cheap cheap, iliot just let it flow freely to the drain.,.

i had 20 unit or m3 FOC in selangor per mth.
then i complained why its so so expensive water here.
its ever increasing as water is owned fully by the city hall.

from 1.90 to now 4.62 per m3 in 12 yrs.
that FOC 20 unit, i paid 20 x 4.62 x 3.5 = rm$323 per month n with fear of increasing soon!
