The Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (Fomca) has warned consumers to brace themselves as it expects the 20-sen increase to the price of RON95 petrol and diesel to have a domino effect on all sectors.

"There will be a negative impact on public transportation, the manufacturing sector, construction as well as the food industry.

"The government should be prepared to face the fallout from the fuel hike," warned its president Datuk N. Marimuthu.

Marimuthu noted that 90% of the public use RON95 which is heavily subsidised as opposed to RON97, which is based on the market price.

"The government is also planning to revise the electricity tariffs, which I think is going to happen soon," he told The Malaysian Insider.

Marimuthu said the government should face the angry public as it has failed to explain how markets operate, how subsidies function and how prices are determined.

"This was never done over the last 56 years and announcements are made as and when the government wanted to hike prices. This is not a good move at all as the public does not like surprises when it affects their pockets," he added.

Yes, no free petrol to ministers, deputy and senior officials. Right now going to office and back, even for lunch, is considered official and therefore eligible for free petrol. As I have said many times, members of administration and senior government servants in the country are enjoy privileges far greater than those in advanced and richer countries. Time to expose and stop them.

Shameless Malaysian Government Fraud Goes Global

Last week, a civil suit was filed at the High Court of Malaysia by a number of very disgruntled investors. They are alleging that Doxport Technologies Sdn Bhd solicited their investments based on false invoices and fraudulent documents and have misappropriated funds of about $4 million.

When their support was solicited in 2008 and 2009, the investors considered that Malaysia was an emerging, secure and accountable business system and assumed that they would gain an honest return on their investment. Today however, after several years of fighting to get their funds returned, they have met with nothing but delays.

The whole affair raises serious questions whether investigation is being stalled by people in high places. This is certainly a matter which would merit investigation by the MACC and by any government concerned in its commitment to battle corruption.

The investors have had many meetings with Malaysian politicians and ministers in London and Malaysia -- including Prime Minister Najib a day after he announced Part 1 of his New Economic Model which included promoting inward investment.

British political leaders are taking up the issue on behalf of these British citizens and in spite of countless reassurances that Malaysian justice can be relied upon, there has still been no definitive action from the Malaysian government.

The original funds were invested in Doxport Technologies Sdn Bhd whose chairman and director is the influential Dato Seri Abdul Azim Bin Mohd Zabidi, former treasurer of the main UNMO political ruling party. The other director of Doxport Technologies is Sivalingam Thechinamoorthy, who is allegedly one of the 'frontmen' for many of Dato Abdul Azim's deals, with Thechinamoorthy's wife, Gurmeet Kaur, playing a pivotal role as well.

This is by no means the first hint of corruption within Malaysia's political elite, despite Malaysia's high-profile anti-corruption crusade. Prime Minister Najib Razak's government professes to be taking a lead in weeding out graft but the perception is growing that corruption under the Najib administration is flourishing.

For example, the global corruption watchdog, Transparency International reported recently that Malaysia scored worst in the world in the 2012 Bribe Payers Survey.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) began its operation officially on January 1, 2009 and according to the official website of International Association of Anti Corruption Authorities, "had focused on investigating cases involving illegal mining and sand smuggling, illegal logging, corruption at the country's entry points as well as distribution of diesel subsidy." An impression is given of a corrupt government hounding the small offenders and ignoring the more important cases of pervasive graft.

Abuse continues in government procurement and scandals such as the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Project, not to mention the Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ) described by Transparency International as "a black mark on the country's history." Another example is the Bakun Dam in Sarawak which was included in Transparency International's 'Monuments of corruption' Global Corruption Report in 2005. The mandate to develop the project went to a timber contractor and a friend of Sarawak's governor. The construction of the dam was found to be faulty and the provincial government of Sarawak is still looking for customers to consume the power to be generated by the project.

However, rather than living up to its promises, the government continues to deal with corruption by shameless blame shifting and paper shuffling. The delay in fully investigating the Doxport Technologies alleged fraud case is yet another egregious example of justice delayed and therefore justice denied. This will not rest here however, as the British victims of the Doxport Technologies alleged fraud are moving their case to a higher level.

British investors have received the support of many of their Members of Parliament, Members of the House of Lords and the Foreign & Commonwealth Office, many of whom have sent letters:

• 9 have written to date, to the Malaysian Prime Minister -- no reply has ever been received
• 6 have written to date, to the Malaysian High Commissioner in the UK -- no reply has ever been received
• 3 have written to date, to the Malaysian Attorney General -- no reply has been received to date
• 3 have written to date, to the Malaysian Minister of Law -- no reply has been received to date

However, letters to the British Foreign Secretary have ensured that the British Government is aware and active in the case and that the Doxport Technologies alleged fraud will have major repercussions.

The persistent corruption in Malaysia is destroying the country's international reputation as a safe and equitable environment for investment and is doing immense disservice and harm to its people. Whistleblowers in Malaysia have not had a fair hearing over the years with ominous reports for example of people falling to their death following interrogation by authorities.

Opposition politicians find themselves facing trumped up charges if their accusations get too close to the truth and Anwar Ibrahim, former Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia and currently the de facto leader of Keadilan, the People's Justice Party, has already spent a number of years imprisoned for his courageous stand against government corruption.

Tackling fraud will be Anwar Ibrahim's top priority if elected when the country goes to the ballot. Prime Minister Najib Razak must dissolve parliament by April 28th and hold the election within 60 days, but a nervous leadership is delaying the announcement to the last possible moment and is bringing the democratic process of free and fair elections into question.

Fraud and corruption in Malaysia have reached a shameless new level and might be seen as the dying efforts of a government on its way out. Certainly the people of Malaysia deserve better if trust is to be reestablished in Malaysia as an international player in global economics. Respect for the law must begin at the top. If Doxport Technologies and its directors cannot be made accountable, hopefully the government of Malaysia will receive a just verdict of defeat in the imminent election and democratic justice will prevail.

The Malaysian Federal Government currently has External Debts worth RM16.4BILLION, by which 11.1BILLION of that debt is denominated in US Dollars while another 5.2BILLION is denominated in Japanese Yen.

With a slumping Ringgit, those debts are now MORE EXPENSIVE to service.

Another worrying factor is that with a falling Ringgit, Malaysian imports which we are dependent upon from the OUTside such as Beef, Mutton, Fresh Milk, Milk Powder and Wheat may actually RISE, making the prices of such producst derived from Wheat and Milk MORE EXPENSIVE.

Petrol, Prime Minister Najib Razak announced, will go up by 20 cents. In a clear sign of the vast gap that separates him from the everyday life of Malaysians, he added that it was not much. That, of course, is not at all true.

Raising the price of petrol raises the price of everything else, from milk to curry powder to pampers to tenggiri. The ordinary Malaysian, stuck with a stagnant paycheck thanks to BN’s incompetence in running Malaysia, will suffer. He will need to borrow ever more to get through the month. Some will resort to loan sharks, who proliferate unpoliced.

This then is life under the Barisan Nasional. They are bereft of ideas. Their projects are all failures, resulting only in large sums of money going into the pockets of expatriates who whoop it up in Bangsar, while Malaysians have to hang their head as they make their way to fly-ridden restaurants.

Wastage and mismanagement

What happened to Najib’s ETPs and whatever else? They were a bunch of meaningless acronyms given false life by Idris Jala’s numbers massaging. Now all Najib can do is raise our taxes.

There is no question that the external environment is a difficult one. China’s growth is slowing thus reducing commodities prices and we are sorely affected. So that’s what we are, a nation dependent on commodities! We have only stuff we dig out of the ground to sell! How we have progressed!

Why then does the government continue to sink money into rubbish like the Multimedia Super Corridor, another of former premier Mahathir Mohamad’s megalomaniacal projects. It has produced naught! It is managed by the same old people who have got it precisely nowhere.

Proton meanwhile is coming up with a new car. It is a Honda Accord, but with headlights of different geometrical shape, and lower overall quality. Brilliant.

There will be more price rises in the coming months courtesy of the BN. To keep you under control, there will be more draconian laws, used in innovative ways to silence you.

If you and your family are going hungry, consider working two jobs. Lots of government servants are doing that already. If all else fails, there’s always the friendly neighbourhood loan shark. His number is on all the lamp posts.

The higher operational costs resulting from the 20 sen increase in the price of RON95 petrol and diesel is likely to be pushed to customers, according to major players in the transport industry.

They also ask the public to brace for the chain effect of more expensive goods and services.

The Pan Malaysian Bus Operators Association, which has 130 members nationwide, expects fares for stage and express coaches to rise between 5% and 30% “in the near future”.

“The hike in diesel price has resulted in an immediate rise of 5% in operational costs and this will have an impact on stage and express bus operators,” association president Datuk Ashfar Ali said.

“We urge the Government to act quickly to minimise the impact as operators will find it hard to absorb the increase in fuel cost,” he told The Star.

Operators are now given a quota of 1,400 litres of diesel per month for a stage bus and 2,800 litres for an express bus. The quota price is now RM1.68 a litre.

Bus operators have to pay the pump price – now increased to RM2 – if they exceed their monthly quota, Ashfar said.

Ashfar suggested that the Government increase the diesel quota for stage coaches to 3,000 litres a month, and for express buses to 6,000 litres.

The Selangor and Kuala Lumpur Lorry Operators Association said that diesel costs made up 30% to 40% of the entire expenditure of its members.

The fuel hike would raise their operation costs by about 5% to 8%, association secretary-general Alvin Choong added.

“This is quite a significant increase. Operators will naturally try to pass the extra cost on to the consumers,” he said.

He, however, believed the increase in the prices of goods due to the fuel spike “should not be very big”.

Choong, who expects the Government to increase diesel prices further in the near future, said it should not be done in stages.

Association of Malaysian Hauliers president Datuk Che Azizuddin Che Ismail said “it is natural” for consumers to pay more when operation costs go up.

He said the additional costs would depend on the type of vehicle an operator used and the kind of cargo transported.

“It is up to the operators how much of the cost they will pass on to their customers,” he said. -thestar
