"queue at RM 5 .."
@Henryjohny, possible to get this price if Malaysia registers -5% economic growth for 4 consecutive quarters.

Good counter with good dividend
Waiting for lower to collect more, to get better DY
Nothing against it, pure from angle of improving dividend yield

A lot of malaysian with small head but like to wear big hat , this leyman crisis 2.0 sure will have many people default n bankrupt , do u think this will affect malaysia banks or not ???

Tiger bank cash flow will be a bomb during this leyman crisis 2.0 ! Dont chase high now , wait until rm 4- 5 !

Posted by prudentinvestor > 2023-03-14 19:58 | Report Abuse

Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank which collapsed recently are small banks in the US. They don't even rank among the top 15 banks. When Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy in 2008, it had more than US$600 billion in assets, probably equivalent to US$1 trillion today. No comparison. Don't pretend that you know a lot of things.

When price drops due to sentiment and not due to any fundamental change......it's time to buy buy buy.....

Look like a lot of ppl want to buy banks cheap that's why they equate Maybank with svb. They are miles apart!

Those banks were affected by the repriced of the bonds held by them. Without even disposing the bonds, the losses/value of the bonds in hand are mostly in losses position. Worse scenario is even after disposing all the bonds at lost, the banks still did not have enough of cash to meet the withdrawals from the savers/depositors.

Exactly

Posted by prudentinvestor > 2023-03-14 22:53 | Report Abuse

Of course we are different. US bank shares can drop by over 90% in a single day. A 10% drop in Maybank shares would be considered disastrous.

“(For those worried about the same issues here), look for banks that have lower portfolio investment risk, like Public Bank, and with high capital ratios like Maybank and RHB Bank,” Chua advised.

MIDF Research maintains their ‘positive’ call on the sector.

“We believe that any weakness is a buying opportunity, especially given that banks offer attractive dividend yields,” it said.

Kenanga’s last call on the sector was ‘overweight’, noting banking stocks would be firmly held up by resilient earnings.

We continue to expect MAYBANK to provide the most sustainable returns via its consistent market leading dividend yields (7%-8%) despite us toning down our numbers. This is further secured by the group’s long-term vision to ensure operational sustainability remains in check, and affirm its leading position in the market. MAYBANK is one of our 1QCY23 Top Picks.

FY22 net profit of RM8.23b (+2%) and full-year dividend of 58.0 sen came within expectations. Deposits competition will put pressure on profitability though the lapsing of prosperity tax and possible writebacks would translate to substantial growth in the coming year. Maintain OUTPERFORM but with a lower GGM-derived PBV TP of RM10.10 (from RM10.40) on more moderate FY24F BVPS. MAYBANK is still a Top Pick for 1QCY23 for dividend yield sustainability.

Near-term challenges notwithstanding, we continue to like the Group’s prospects, underpinned by its M25+ initiatives. Our earnings estimates are left unchanged, alongside the introduction of FY25 numbers, with Outperform call and TP of RM9.70 retained.

Reiterate BUY, TP drops to MYR9.65 from MYR10.20, 11% upside with c.7% FY23F yield. We raise our COE assumption for Malayan Banking to reflect the persistent uncertainties in the macroeconomic environment. There is no change to our earnings forecasts and, as such, the adjustment of our TP reflects a lower implied fair P/BV. Maybank has a strong, established track record with respect to shareholder returns. In a range- bound market, its dividend yields should be the key driver of total returns.

Credit Suisse nxt to collapse?

The problem is that all regional banks in US are about to be hit. Depositors are withdrawing their money and transferring it to the "too big to fail banks" i.e. Chase manhattan, JP morgan, Citibank ....

Credit Suisse shares tank over 30% after Saudi backer rules out further assistance

Shares of embattled bank Credit Suisse hit another all-time low for a second consecutive day.
Credit Suisse’s biggest backer, Saudi National Bank, has said it won’t provide further financial help for the bank.
Speaking to CNBC’s Hadley Gamble during a panel session in Riyadh on Wednesday morning, Credit Suisse Chairman Axel Lehmann declined to comment on whether his firm would need any sort of government assistance in the future.

First Republic Bank was cut to junk by S&P Global Ratings and Fitch Ratings amid concern that clients will pull holdings from the lender, even after U.S. regulators pledged support for the banking sector.

The California-based bank’s credit rating was lowered to BB+ from A-, and it remains on credit watch negative, according to an S&P statement Wednesday. Shortly after, Fitch cut the bank to BB from A-, a step below the S&P rating, and placed it on a negative rating watch.
