Watch EPF for insider trading and keeping prices suppressed- so that they can buy and sell and making 10cts profit is enough. But it is not good for the counter. It will not go and will not rwflect its true value.Bursa must take action!!!

Proton won't be profitable in 4 to 5 years. This is DRB share, not Proton share. Have to study the impact of Geely partnership on DRB and not Proton.

Going forward, the share (49.9%) of Proton loss will be shared with Geely. Resulting lower losses reported in DRB Books. Hopefully, going forward, DRB will start reporting break-even figures.

If I remember correctly, read somewhere, Proton annual losses about RM900 million. If nothing changes, things stay the same, about RM450 million will be reported in Geely books and DRB books will show an improvement of about RM450 million. This is what I am hoping for. We will only know this when we see quarterly result announcement next year.

Previously Proton loss around RM900m per year, now take half RM450m still loss. Only can break-even in 5 years, means, another RM2bn of losses hitting accumulated profit. be frank, next year Proton loss will be close to RM1.2bn, it makes DRB to absorb RM600m. Sure not good.

DRB 51%, Board member 3/5, 2 from Geely, it makes DRB to continue consolidate Proton account. Despite the sharing 49%, it will only show in the NCI. Sell fast!! 1.40 coming.

Li Chunrong named CEO of Proton manufacturing arm

-A+A
SHAH ALAM (Sept 29): After much speculation, DRB-Hicom Bhd and Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co Ltd confirmed today that Dr Li Chunrong will be the new CEO of Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional Sdn Bhd (PONSB).

Chunrong, who recently joined Geely's senior management from Dongfeng Honda Engine Co Ltd, and was widely rumoured to be appointed for the post, will be responsible for Proton's entire operations involving production, manufacturing, operations, marketing, quality, research and development, and sales and marketing.

"My job is not to look at the past, but I will work day and night to make sure Proton is strongly successful," he said following his appointment at a media conference today.

Chunrong, who will be succeeding Datuk Ahmad Fuaad Kenali effective Oct 1, added he would prioritise customer satisfaction, as well as look into product planning, procurement and quality.

Meanwhile, Datuk Radzaif Mohamed will remain deputy CEO of PONSB.

"We are confident now that we have the right team to steer Proton," DRB's CEO Datuk Seri Syed Faisal Albar Syed Albar said at a media conference today.

Daniel Donghui Li, Geely's executive Vice President and chief financial officer, emphasised that the key for the company's success would be the products it offered.

Syed Faisal said the loss-making national carmaker may breakeven as early as 3 years from now, and turn profitable in five years' time.

"In 10 years, the aim is to make Proton the largest brand in Asia," he told reporters.

On the subject of future product launches, Syed Faisal said it would take time to convert Geely's models to right-hand drives.

"For the next fourteen months, there will be no new product launches, but we have to do something to improve customer satisfaction," Chunrong said.

Daniel reaffirmed Geely's support for Proton, saying it would offer Volvo's resources, as well as supply new engines to the Malaysian carmaker.

This will include engines that meet the Euro 6 emission standards, hybrid engines and pure electric engines, Daniel said.

Proton, which is currently using Euro 4 emission standard engines, would need these new engines in order to improve its exports across ASEAN, Syed Faisal added.

Proton Holdings Bhd saw the appointment of Daniel and Feng Qing Feng, Hong-Kong listed Geely Auto's group Vice President and chief technical officer, to its board, which would continue to be chaired by Syed Faisal. The board would also be joined by Shahrul Farez Hassan and Amalamathan Thomas, who are part of the senior management team at DRB-Hicom.

Farez is chief operating officer of properties, corporate planning, and strategy at DRB, while Thomas is group director of group financial services in the same company.

All five directors of Proton will also sit on the board of PONSB, and will be joined by Dr Nathan Yu Ning, Geely's Vice President of international business, and Winfried Vahland, former chairman and CEO of Skoda Auto.

Meanwhile, Proton Edar Sdn Bhd, the carmaker's Malaysian distribution unit, also saw the appointment of Farez, Thomas, Daniel and Yu.

The appointment of Li marks another stepping stone in the conclusion of plans to revive Proton, which DRB's CEO Datuk Seri Syed Faisal Albar Syed Albar said could be completed as early as end-2018.

Geely and DRB had in June this year signed a definite agreement that saw Geely buying a 49.9% stake in Proton, while DRB kept the controlling 50.1% stake.

All eyes are on who national carmaker will select as its strategic partner

A NEW technical partner for Proton Holdings Bhd could be a catalyst for DRB-Hicom Bhd
image: https://cdn.thestar.com.my/Themes/img/chart.png

. For one thing, it would reduce the impact of Proton’s losses on DRB-Hicom.

For another, it will immediately increase Proton’s underutilised assembly plant in Tanjung Malim.

In addition, a collaboration with a new partner could open a new opportunity for the group to expand into Asean markets - which will mean better sales for the national car manufacturer.

These are among the factors for the potential upside of DRB-Hicom stock, which has been trading at a discount to its asset value for years, with investors shying away from the stock on issues such as Proton’s financial struggles.

At the current share price of RM1.26 apiece, DRB-Hicom is valued at a price-to-book value (P/BV) of 0.41 times, lower than the automotive sector’s at 0.7 times P/BV.

Despite seemingly cheap valuations for a company with strategic assets in automotive and logistics services, it is worth noting that DRB-Hicom is a loss-making one.

For the first half of its financial year ending March 31, 2017, the company’s net losses widened to RM478.9mil from RM15.8mil a year earlier.

Revenue during the period fell by a billion ringgit to RM5bil due to lower vehicle sales.

Nonetheless, five out of six analysts surveyed by Bloomberg have a “buy” call on DRB-Hicom, with a consensus target price of RM1.49.

International marques

Apart from Proton, DRB-Hicom also assemble international marques such as Honda, Toyota and Volkswagen.

DRB-Hicom had announced earlier that it aims to reduce its dependence on the automotive segment, which is vulnerable to economic cycles, and that it wants to raise revenue contributions from logistics.

Presently, the automotive and property businesses contributed 81% to the group’s total annual revenue, while the remaining 19% is from its services segment that include logistics and financial services.

In DRB-Hicom’s results for FY16 ended March 31, the firm posted a net loss of RM991.9mil from RM300.2mil in FY15.

During the period, its automotive segment booked almost RM1bil operating losses.

Excluding its automotive’s RM1bil loss, DRB-Hicom should have made a RM370.5mil profit.

With local car sales on the downtrend and the continuous effort to liberalise the automotive segment, the national carmaker has no choice but to buck up.

More sales

The biggest question is can the new partnership turn around Proton, which has been suffering from declining sales, losing market share and is in dire need of a partner with the technical expertise to make it more competitive.

In 2016, Proton sales dropped by 30% to 72,290 cars from 102,174 units in 2015, and lost its market position to Honda.

“What Proton needs is a foreign strategic partner that can help Proton with a new model development, technology transfer, management of development costs, implementation of a more cost effective manufacturing processes, penetration of new markets and revitalise the Proton brand,” RHB Research analyst Alexander Chia says.

He says a typical car manufacturer would have an average product life cycle of about six years.

“Proton’s products typically have an extended life cycle due to a lack of economies of scale where it takes a longer time to sell the requisite number of units to adequately amortise development costs.

“Towards the latter part of this extended life cycle, Protons’ products have become increasingly uncompetitive as they get left behind by newer competing products.

“They need wholesale improvement in manufacturing scale to remain competitive in a demanding market,” Chia says.

For Proton to break even, he says the firm needs to produce at least 100,000 - 120,000 cars per year.

Proton has already been exporting its cars to Brunei, Australia and Chile, but not in a big way.

Another analyst says that the development cost for a new model such as Proton Iriz cost about RM500mil and that it needs to sell at least 200,000 units within five years with the development cost per unit at around RM3,000.

Note that Proton is currently in the midst of finalising a technical partner that could be in the form of China-based Geely or PSA Group of France.

The requirement to collaborate with a well known strategic partner was imposed upon Proton as part of the conditions issued by the Government for its approval of an RM1.5bil soft loan to Proton, in which a bulk of the money would be used to pay its vendors.

Asean market

Aside from fulfilling the condition, DRB-Hicom wants a collaborator that can provide a strategic, operational and cultural fit to the national carmaker.
also ensure that Proto

The Chinaman trying to introduce Boyue in Malaysia. But look at Malaysia market, proton saga being the best selling car in Malaysia ranging around RM40-50k, so how much Boyue is going to sell? Obviously, the Chinaman does not understand our market. Proton customer only can afford 30-50k, nothing more, they could not get loan.

I am also not confident with Boyue, selling about RM100k in China. Proton has not done well in the higher pricing products. I am hoping they will introduce their A segment car, the X1. Which is selling in China between RM25k~40k. Which I am sure the new CEO will realise by himself in a matter of time. This vehicle will give the factory the volume they need to be profitable.

I dont want to pour water, but this water I pour or not also same. Do you know Proton Suprima sell less than 1000 unit per year? This is the fact. Suprima turbocharge with Lotus handling, such a good car, sell less than 1000 unit per year, so you tell me what Boyue can achieve, let it kena jackpot sell 10,000, how? Your target 150k unit per year, can achieve ah?
