15 sen per shares projected on last 3 mths 2021. AVG tin price last qtr ard 130k MYR = 31 k USD . Bare in mind last qtr still affected by force majeure n yet fully operated in pulau Indah plants.

This year 2022 Jan n Feb avg tin price ard 42k usd , which is 35% more then last qtr tin price and CEO also stated their production for this year will be more. I foresee next qtr result will be very interesting to look at.

Tin ore usually contain 70 to 75% of tin metal. Therefore, 12ton/day extraction of tin ore will provide a yield about 756 to 810 ton of tin per quarter.


"Tin concentrates from the alluvial mining areas of Southeast Asia are relatively free of impurities, although there may be small quantities of related minerals such as wolframite, scheelite, and columbite. Concentrates shipped to the smelter usually contain 70 to 75 percent tin metal. On the other hand, the complex sulfide ores found in underground deposits, such as those of Bolivia, require more complicated mineral processing, often involving froth flotation, in order to produce a clean tin concentrate. Even then, Bolivian concentrates may average only 50 to 60 percent tin."

It would be very good performance if MSC manage to achieve 70% yield or 3,024 tonnes of tin concentrates per year from the 12tonnes/day tin ore mining in 2022.

MSC Production of tin-in-concentrates:

2020 - 2350 tonnes
2019 - 2288 tonnes

KUALA LUMPUR: Electric car batteries will be the key growth driver for tin commodity in the next few years as it is now being used as the base metal, aside from nickel, to produce faster charging car batteries.

Malaysia Smelting Corporation Bhd (MSC) chief executive officer Datuk Dr Patrick Yong Mian Thong said tin is greatly used in electric car batteries and it will be the growth base metal and the biggest user of tin due to its ability to fast charge and discharge ability.

"Undoubtedly, tin price will see solid uptrend in the next 5 years when the production and demand for batteries goes up, especially from the electric car segment. - he told The New Straits Times in an interview.

Tin smelting is a competitive business. Net profit margin 5% is considered very good. Tin Mining operation remains the main contributor.

Tech startup, Nanode, has developed a low-cost tin foil anode technology for lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries to increase volumetric energy density up to 50% while saving up to 60% on raw material costs and processing costs.

Once Nanode achieves cycle life targets and potentially gains traction in the EV sector, this could result in a significant new use for tin.

Our view: ITA has been closely tracking R&D on tin foil anodes for lithium-ion batteries and are keen to see this first example of commercial ramping. This anode variant is of particular interest to the tin industry as it has the highest tin content.

The simplicity and large-scale nature of melt spinning makes this low technology approach particularly attractive, with previous interest in similar tin metal variants in India and China. Tin mining division has the potential to push up its production to 3,000 tonnes of tin in year 2022 after upgrading their tin ore production to 12/tonnes per day.

Tin mining production :

2021 - estimate about the same with 2020
2020 - 2,350 tonnes
2019 - 2,288 tonnes
2018 - 2,355 tonnes
2017 - 2, 226 tonnes

New smelting Top Submerged Lance (TSL)furnace capacity is able to process 60,000 tonnes of tin concentrates or max 42,000 tonnes refined tin a year. MSC managed to produce merely 16,400 tonnes (Year 2021) of refined tin due to covid impact and switching to TSL furnace gradually. If TSL achieves average production capacity of 75% (45,000 tonnes) processing tin concentrates in year 2022, the output of refined tin will be 31,500 tonnes.

Smelting refined tin production output in the past few years:

2021 - 16,400 tonnes
2020 - 22,325 tonnes
2019 - 25,752 tonnes
2018 - 27,085 tonnes
2017 - 27,172 tonnes,
2016 - 26,802 tonnes

Many people didn’t know Russia is one of the country that produce tin . With this conflict wow I can’t imagine how high tin prices going to shoot up to . I m perturbed after the quarter announcement why MSc price still at below rm5.
