Pet cat contracts Covid-19 from Belgian owner

BRUSSELS: A pet cat has been infected with the Covid-19 coronavirus in Belgium after being contaminated by its owner, Belgian health authorities said on Friday.

Cases of contamination of pets are rare and authorities ruled out any risk of contamination to humans from home animals.

The report follows similar cases in Hong Kong where two dogs tested positive for Covid-19 during a screening campaign carried out on 17 dogs and eight cats living in contact with people carrying the virus.

In Belgium, the discovery was made by researchers at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Liege.

This is “an isolated case” which can occur after “close contact between animals and infected humans“, said Doctor Emmanuel Andre, a government agency spokesman on the pandemic.

The virus can be transmitted from humans to animals but “there is no reason to think that animals can be vectors of the epidemic in our society“, he said.

In Hong Kong, “the dogs showed no symptoms“, while in Belgium “the cat was suffering from transitory respiratory and digestive problems“, said the Belgian food safety agency AFSCA in a statement.

“So far, there is no evidence that a domestic animal can transmit the virus to humans or other pets“, the public authority said.

As a precautionary measure, it is “strongly recommended” to apply standard rules of hygiene when dealing with pets: “avoid close contact with pets... wash your hands after handling any animal, do not let the animal lick your face.”

The aim is to prevent the transmission of the virus to the animal and to prevent the animal itself from becoming a carrier of the virus.

Actually Two things will happen.

Either we will move onto a post-apocalyptic society or the stocks will make a comeback like every other crisis before this.

If the first one was to happen, there is not much difference between wasting your money on stocks compared to anything else. Even stocking on supplies will not help you on the long run.

However, if the markets recover, like they do all the time, then you would be buying the stocks when they cheap, making you a hefty profit. But this might require a long patience, and unfortunately not many people have that.

No locally transmitted Covid-19 cases in China

reported no locally transmitted coronavirus infections for the previous day and a small reduction in new cases involving travellers from overseas, as new restrictions on the entry of foreigners kicked in.

Effective Saturday, China has temporarily suspended the entry of foreign nationals with valid Chinese visas and residence permits.

The new restriction reflects worries in Beijing over the risk posed by so-called imported cases of the virus after widespread lockdowns within China helped to bring domestic transmissions under control.

Beijing has also ordered airlines to sharply cut international flights from Sunday.

A commentary in the People's Daily newspaper on Saturday reflected the concern.

"At this time, we must be extremely vigilant and cautious, and we must prevent the post-epidemic relaxation from coming too soon, leading to the loss of all our achievements," it said.

China's National Health Commission said on Saturday that 54 new coronavirus cases were reported on the mainland on Friday, all involving imported cases. There were 55 new cases a day earlier, one of which was transmitted locally.

The total number of infections for mainland China now stands at 81,394, with the death toll rising by three to 3,295, the commission said.

Hubei province reported no new cases, and three new deaths.

The province of 60 million, where the virus was first detected, has recorded 67,801 coronavirus cases and 3,177 deaths.

Chinese President Xi Jinping told US President Donald Trump on Friday that China would support US efforts to fight the coronavirus.

The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in the United States rose by at least 16,000 on Friday to nearly 102,000, the most of any country.

why China can be so successful?

- 100 million party members who works tirelessly to make sure full compliance by everyone
- they are able to solve problems as they arise making compliance more likely.
- they use a lot of technology to solve problems and make sure full compliance.
- the solution is........testing, isolation and quarantines of contacts, suspects
-they got quarantine stations,...got people who take care of the children and the needy.
