Arguably, the greatest value investor of all time. Warren Buffett is the idol of most investors. The biggest success in investing.

Should you adopt his style on Bursa Malaysia?

1. We simply attempt to be fearful when others are greedy and to be greedy only when others are fearful.

Comment: How can you even determine whether others' are greedy or fearful? Market timing is not reliable. Investing based on others' emotions is only part of the equation.

2. Price is what you pay. Value is what you get.

Comment: Price is what you can see. Value is what you cannot see. How to invest based on what we cannot see? That is no different from blind investing.

3. Our favorite holding period is forever.

Comment: This takes the cake. Have you ever seen a successful Malaysian investor that holds stocks forever? Are you as rich as Warren Buffett? Does Malaysia's economy grow as fast as USA? You buy and hold forever, your money will be stuck for an era.

4. It’s far better to buy a wonderful company at a fair price, than a fair company at a wonderful price.

Comment: Often, investors misinterpret it as encouragement to buy wonderful companies at any price. Then, they pay the price. Buying fair companies at wonderful prices may be as profitable, if not more.

5. Know your circle of competence, and stick within it. The size of that circle is not very important; knowing its boundaries, however, is vital.

Comment: Basically, invest in companies you know that will perform. You might know only a handful , or even 100 companies. Circle of competence means you know everything about the industry, from product/service to competitors. Also applies to technical analysis/charting of a company.

6. Rule No. 1: Never lose money. Rule No. 2: Never forget rule No.1

Comment: Why is this the last? Because it's easy to forget. The ULTIMATE STOCK TIP that works anywhere.

Conclusion: I'm a fan of Warren Buffett. However, his investment quotes are generally not applicable to local investors. Prove me wrong.

If you want to follow Warren Buffet, invest where he invests, in the USA, with the federal reserve money printer to backstop all his his "wise sayings".

I have a colleague who says Warren Buffett is a con, just being very lucky.

I roll my eyes, and answer roughly like Milosh. I just ask, so, whats your portfolio return this year?

And this guy is a follower of Wuchang the con artist. He told me price targets and what date I can expect it for some of the stocks, because his sifu has mastered the art of future fortune telling over a 20 years period (like those sifu who went to mountain to meditate for 20 years and obtained enlightenment kinda story). Again I roll my eyes.

Bro if you're seeing this, yes I'm talking about you la!
