I don't know how to apply the theories of famous gurus in investment in upstream plantation segment.

I simply know keeping track of FFB production of all the companies, CPO and soy oil prices, gearing level, area mature and immature, the location of the lands, the palm industry trend for Malaysia & Indonesia.... I found my own theory or SOP of making money in the market.

An investment of 6400 in DLady in 1993 is now worth 108,000 today, excluding the massive dividends received.

An investment of 2000 in Petdag in 2005 (when sold down due to falling China Market!!!!) Is now with 20,000, excluding dividends.

Of course, don't just buy 2,000. When it rained money, take out the big container.😀

In 1993, bought Nestle for 8000 and today it is 120,000 not including the dividends.

My friends sold at 20 many years ago because it was too high. Another friend sold at 90 a few years back because it was too overpriced.

Was I lucky?

Not really.

The big bear market appeared in 1997 and 1998. I did not sell a single share. My portfolio went down with the market. In fact, it was below my capital value.

However, in 2002, the portfolio was worth a lot more tan all my capital invested. I did not lose any money (rule 1 of Buffett). My good fortune was the high quality stocks I have in my portfolio.

I did a favour for a friend. She was stuck with a list of penny stocks in 1999 and 2000. I advised her to sell all but one. Even the one, when it's price climbed to fair value, it was sold. My advice to her is be happy with FD rates

If you have bought Nestle in 2014, you should still have a gain today.

Let me tell you a true story. My cousin inherited 300,000 Nestle Malaysia shares from his conservative father, a long time Nestle distributor since the 1950's, and who had faithfully subscribed for Nestle's share incentive scheme through the intervening years. Soon after Nestle was listed in 1989, he sold his shares at over RM5 so he could get the funds to build his dream house (not in KL or Penang) What a terribly poor decision in hindsight. The 300,000 Nestle shares would be worth RM35 million today and he would have enjoyed superlative dividends over 30 years. The moral of the story is when you have got a real stock winner with a dominant business, stick with it faithfully through the years. As an aside, the Nestle distributorship is long gone, he has sold the dream house and emigrated to greener pastures.

3i could be relying on dividend income to support his life and he was lucky. We, traders, started with a small capital and have to work very very hard to understanding the business of the company or an industry. Market keeps changing and repeating.

Strongly agree
there is no one size fix all formula
based on our ability and know what we capable of
and find out our own strength and weaknesses
know what suit us best and keep doing it
and keep find tuning it
do what we know best and comfortable with

How to educate a fish what it is like breathing out of water? !!😀😀

It is almost a given, at some stage in your investing life, your stock value or your portfolio value may decline 50%. If you are not prepared for this, you cannot be a successful value investor in the long term.

My portfolio value had dropped 50% or so in 1997 AFC and dropped 30% in the 2008 (GFC). In both periods, the major portion of my portfolio remained undisturbed and I did not sell. I did not have to.

A friend declared to me how she and her husband had sold ALL their stocks in 2008.

When I met them again in 2000, they were planning to reinvest into stocks but have not; their reason the stock prices had risen too high!

I can only conclude their chance of becoming successful investors long term in the stock market to be slim.

They should not be in the stock market. Full stop.

The world has changed and with easy access to information and you are now competing with fund managers, sharks, billis, even with cumputer programe trading software and maybe AI in the near future.

So the only rule now that still valid is you can't afford to lose 50% of your capital. Set your cut lose level and also minitor your winners are the micro and macro conditions going to against it, then you better take profit before your paper gain become paper lose.

You can always keep cash and wait for the strom to blow over before reinvest again.

Your portfolio will have no multibaggers.

Sell the lovers and let the winners ride.

Selling the winners to lock in profit will mean you end up with a portfolio of lovers and poor performers.

Listen to the first 5 minutes of the audiobook, Common Stocks and Uncommon Profit.

I have travelled the journey described by Philip Fisher.

Would you be brave to invest a lump sum of RM1 m into a stock, eg Nestle at any stage. Of course, not.

But if you have invested regularly and over many years, you will find you are invested in a greater amount in Nestle for the future.

Good points made by many on the downfalls of ego, focusing on the fundamentals, taking a long-term approach etc. B4 covid, one old man with few teeth left in his mouth(looked to be early-to-mid '70s) used to approach me to talk about his 20,000 DLady shares at every opportunity & go on & on about how he's earning ton$ just from dividends back then( when I as all holders then received $1.10 per share regularly twice a year(& 3x in 2017). I wonder now if that was 3iii himself...Well, going as I do to the supermarket often, I began to notice in 2018 that they were discounting their milk frequently at the same time as competitors like Goodday began to step up aggressive marketing & Nestle entered the milk mkt for the first time.

When I regularly picked Goodday for my milk due to its superior taste, I kinda saw the writing on the wall for DLady & SOLD my small position bought @ $48.66 in 2013 for $64.32 in Oct '18 after receiving more than $15.00 in dividends since purchase.

Another fellow shareholder whom I met attending AGMs revealed she had 11,000 DLady bought in '93 & '04 & had to proxy me to attend their shareholder meeting in '19 as I had ZERO shares by then. Oddly, the price remained high @ $62-65 through most of '19 until memorably beginning its long downfall in Sep shortly after EPF bought another 225,000 shares @ above $65. I had advised the lady who proxied me to sell at least a few of her shares just in case my on the ground observations portended a big fall ahead but she clung on to every single share with justifications such as : 'I get over $20,000 per year from dividends' & 'if Nestle can go to $140, DLady can go to $100' etc....& kept hanging on...until finally demoralized by the drop from $60 to $50 to $40, $30 & then $20, she FINALLY sold in high-to-mid $20s. All her shares were free by then anyway so it wasn't a question of loss but how much MORE she could have made with better discernment. Never fall in love with a stock is a good maxim to follow whoever said it!
