KUALA LUMPUR: Pos Malaysia Bhd becomes the 22nd member of the International Post Corporation (IPC) Sustainability Measurement and Management System (SMMS) programme as part of the company's sustainability strategy.
In a statement today, the company said the programme aims to manage sustainability and reduce the postal industry's collective carbon footprint.
Through this unique global industry approach to climate change, posts have reduced their carbon emissions by 34 per cent since the programme's launch in 2008.
Group chief executive officer Charles Brewer said the company is committed to upgrading its internal combustion engine (ICE) fleet to electric vehicles, improving operational efficiency, and utilising cleaner energy sources by installing solar photovoltaic (PV) panels throughout its facilities, among other sustainable initiatives planned.
"Everything we do at Pos Malaysia serves one purpose: to be passionate about building trust to connect lives and businesses for a better tomorrow.
"This commitment guides us in our efforts and sense of responsibility, underscores our values, focuses on our mission, and creates long-term value.
"Fulfilling our purpose requires us to make every dimension of our business sustainable," he said.
IPC chief executive officer Holger Winklbauer said Pos Malaysia is the first South-East Asian post participating in the programme, demonstrating the value of working together as a sector to make a difference for the planet.
The IPC SMMS programme was launched in 2019 to address the sustainability objectives of the postal sector for the next ten years, aligned with the UN Sustainability Development Goals (SDGs).

Pos Malaysia Berhad announced a profit for the first time in 15 consecutive quarters, in the three months ended June 2022 (Q2 FY2022), the Group posted a profit before tax (PBT) of RM0.2 million, reversing a loss before tax (LBT) of RM29.9 million in the preceding quarter (Q1 FY2022). Its Q2 FY2022 revenue came in at RM517.3 million, an increase of 6.8% compared to the previous quarter’s RM484.3 million.
Looking at the six months that ended 30 June 2022 (H1 FY2022), Pos Malaysia registered a loss before tax of RM29.7 million, an 82.1% improvement from the RM165.5 million LBT achieved a year ago. Pos Malaysia attributed its improved performance to better customer mix and yield, and effective cost management, which resulted in lower transportation and delivery costs. I am extremely proud of every Pos Malaysia employee, and for their continued dedication, passion and commitment. In addition to seeing improving results from its mail and parcel businesses, the aviation and logistics segments are also seeing signs of recovery while the outlook remains positive.
sector consolidation that could enable big players to control the market, better cost management, particularly for labour and fuel, while the conventional mail service remains essential for security purposes, and a faster recovery in the global economy, which would boost demand.
KUALA LUMPUR: Raja Ahmad Hidzir Raja Muhamad will join Pos Malaysia Bhd as its group chief people officer on Dec 15, 2022.
According to the postal services provider, Raja Ahamd Hidzir was most recently the head of human resource for Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd where he was part of the transformation team involved in the restructuring exercise in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya.
"Raja is bringing his exceptional talents to Pos Malaysia at an incredibly important moment, and we are immensely excited to welcome Raja to the Pos Malaysia family," said group CEO Charles Brewer in a statement.
He added that Raja Ahmad Hidzir will play a critical role for the group, its employees and customers.
“I couldn’t be more thrilled to be joining Pos Malaysia as its new group chief people officer. Pos Malaysia is on a very exciting transformational journey, and supporting Pos Malaysia employees and prioritising a strong, forward focused and inclusive culture is more important than ever.
"I believe the company is at a unique inflection point and I look forward to working closely with the management team, our amazing employees and all stakeholders,” said Raja Ahmad Hidzir.
GDEX’s balance sheet is robust, as it is in a net cash position, which should allow it to comfortably embark on any merger and acquisition in the event of a consolidation of courier players,” it pointed out.
As at Sept 30, GDEX had a net cash position of RM268 million.
Call for help GDEX managing director Teong Teck Lean says there is an urgent need for government intervention to ensure the sustainability of the last-mile delivery industry.
“By doing so, the competitiveness of the last-mile players can be enhanced to enable expansion to the region and globally,” he tells The Edge.
“This will give rise to opportunities for some domestic players to grow their business and, at the same time, become an essential infrastructure of the country. If the government does not intervene soon, we believe there will be many local casualties in this space.”
It is worth noting that the local last-mile delivery industry has been operating in a very competitive environment that led to razor-thin margins for industry players, with many dependent on volume to stay afloat.
For perspective, Malaysia, with a population of 33 million, has granted 122 courier licences. In comparison, Thailand, with a population of 70 million, has granted only half as many, while Indonesia has 42 for a nation of 273 million.
Many players are exiting the industry, with the latest being Nationwide Express Holdings Bhd, which will cease operations on Dec 15. Founded in 1985 by the late businessman Tan Sri Basir Ismail, it was a leading courier service provider in Malaysia.
Other companies such as KTM Distribution Sdn Bhd, which had a 38-year presence in the courier and logistics business, terminated its operations on Nov 1. CJ Century Logistics Holdings Bhd sold its loss-making courier arm last year for about RM7.5 million.
Teong, who is also the president of the Association of Malaysian Express Carrier, which represents 25 major courier companies in the country, sees more shutdowns ahead. “Definitely. There will be more roadkill ahead. This is an urgent matter that needs immediate attention from the government and regulators because the industry employs 150,000 local employees.”
He notes that the last-mile delivery market is overcrowded, with many start-ups dumping prices to gain market share.
Teong says some e-commerce platforms have also removed choices of delivery partners. “As a result, GDEX and other players have lost a lot of opportunities to deliver items for merchants who sell on e-commerce platforms, even though these merchants are willing to pay for the delivery service on their own.”
Teong points out that the industry’s volume has dropped 20% since last year. However, the number of complaints received by the Postal Forum has increased by 30%.
Looking ahead, Teong says GDEX will be focusing on optimising its processes and resources to help cushion the increased costs, without impacting the quality of service. “GDEX’s strategy is to differentiate our services by launching new products to enhance the customer experience in the first half of next year. The fully automated sorting hub is expected to be up and running then as well, which will double the sorting capacity to 350,000 packages a day, which will result in enhanced productivity and turnaround time,” he adds.
