Traffic snapshot
• The MAHB network of airports started the year on a positive note, registering 9.08million
passenger movements in January 2023, an increase of 90.0% over January 2022 and a
recovery of 81.3% against 2019 levels.
• International and domestic passenger movements registered 4.2million and 4.8million
passengers respectively, at 78.0% and 84.5% recovery against 2019 levels.
• On a twelve-month basis, the MAHB network of airports registered 88.2million passengers,
an increase of almost 2 folds over the same corresponding period a year ago.
• It is encouraging to note that January 2023 passenger movements for Malaysia remained
above the 6million mark (6.3million passengers) that was first recorded in December 2022,
reaching 74.7% of pre-pandemic levels.
• International passenger movements fared equally well with 2.8million passenger movements
recorded, the same levels seen in December 2022. This also translates into a recovery of
62.5% against 2019 levels, partly driven by China’s reopening of international borders from 8
January 2023, the resumption of Qatar Airways flight frequencies, Chinese New Year holidays
and other airlines additional frequencies.
• On the other hand, 3.5million domestic passenger movements were recorded, driven by the
festive season, MYAirline flight expansions to more domestic destinations and AirAsia
additional frequencies.
• Istanbul SGIA recorded 2.8million passenger movements in January 2023, an increase of
39.2% over January 2022 or 1.2% growth over January 2019. International and domestic
passenger movements registered 1.5million and 1.4million passengers respectively.

Malaysia Airports. Maintain BUY recommendation with unchanged TP: RM7.75, based on SOP. We have seen MAHB reporting lower losses over the quarters and is expected to breakeven in 4QFY22, driven by the improving air travel demand and international air travel mix for both Malaysia and Turkey operations. We expect FY23 to be a profitable year given the expected higher air travel demand and higher airlines’ capacities (reinstating their fleets back to pre-pandemic levels).

Capital A. Maintain BUY recommendation with unchanged TP: RM0.88, based on unchanged 8x FD PE tagged to FY24 EPS. While CapA has not shown meaningful lower losses in the past quarters (affected by depreciated RM/USD, surge in jet fuel prices and higher repair and maintenance charges to reinstate aircrafts), we do expect a better FY23 given the improved situation of RM/USD, jet fuel prices and full 205 fleet of operating aircrafts by mid-2023 (103 aircrafts as at 3QFY22), enabling the group to take advantage of the increasing air travel demand. Nevertheless, the group is still under PN17 status. Management plans to distribute in specie Aviation Group to shareholders, which will subsequently be acquired by AAX (to be renamed as Aviation Group) through a share swap exercise to maintain listing status. Hence existing shareholder of CapA will subsequently own shares in CapA (aviation services and travel fintech) and Aviation Group (airlines).

KUALA LUMPUR: Harga tiket akan terus kekal tinggi seiring dengan pertumbuhan industri penerbangan, kata Ketua Pegawai Eksekutif Capital A, Tan Sri Tony Fernandes.

Beliau berkata, pengekalan harga tiket yang tinggi ini adalah disebabkan syarikat penerbangan mengambil peluang daripada ledakan perjalanan pasca pandemik.

Namun, secara dasarnya, beliau menegaskan bahawa harga tiket penerbangan ketika ini adalah dalam julat harga yang sangat baik.

"Saya fikir syarikat penerbangan sentiasa memandang rendah produk mereka.

"Orang ramai kini terkejut dengan harga tiket penerbangan kerana sedikit lebih tinggi, tetapi sebenarnya kami telah berada di belakang keluk itu sebagai sebuah industri.

"Bagi Capital A, harga tiket naik sekitar 30 peratus," katanya dalam temubual bersama Bloomberg TV.

Syarikat penerbangan di seluruh dunia telah menaikkan harga tiket apabila permintaan melebihi bekalan berikutan pemulihan pesat perjalanan.

Ia selepas sekatan pergerakan disebabkan pandemik COVID-19 menyebabkan banyak syarikat penerbangan berada dalam keluk kerugian.

Tony berkata, harga tiket penerbangan ketika ini juga sebenarnya tidak tinggi tetapi ia adalah harga sebenar semasa.

"Ini adalah harga tiket sebenar yang anda sepatutnya lihat pada 2019 juga. Selepas tiga tahun tidak mengembara, nilai perjalanan rakyat juga meningkat.

"Harga bahan api juga semakin meningkat, ia memberikan faktor kukuh kepada harga tiket ini," katanya.

Sementara itu, Tony berkata Capital A menjangkakan operasi perniagaan penerbangannya akan kembali pulih sepenuhnya pada suku kedua tahun ini.

Beliau berkata, berdasarkan permintaan terhadap penerbangan semasa, semua pesawat milik Capital A di bawah AirAsia akan mula kembali terbang bermula Mei ini.

Katanya, ketika ini 150 pesawat daripada lebih 200 angkatan pesawat milik AirAsia telah memulakan operasi penerbangan.

"Kami menjangkakan perniagaan akan kembali ke paras sama seperti tempoh sebelum penularan COVID-19 dalam beberapa bulan lagi.

"Kumpulan yakin semua angkatan akan kembali ke udara pada Mei ini. Ini kerana permintaan terhadap perjalanan udara adalah sangat baik ketika ini.

"Malah, pembukaan sempadan China juga terus menyumbang kepada pemulihan berterusan kumpulan," katanya.

Tony berkata, China adalah pasaran penting kepada Capital A kerana ia menyumbang sekitar 15 peratus kepada pendapatan kumpulan serta 16 peratus dalam kapasiti, yang diukur dalam kilometer tempat duduk tersedia (ASK).

Beliau berkata, sebagai syarikat penerbangan terbesar dari luar China yang terbang ke negara itu, AirAsia akan memastikan peluang pembukaan sempadan ini akan digunakan sepenuhnya.

"China adalah pasaran penting dan kumpulan merancang akan memperkenalkan lima laluan baharu ke negara itu.

"Malah, kami juga mendapat sokongan daripada kerajaan China. Permintaan juga semakin bertambah baik," katanya.

KUALA LUMPUR: Perkhidmatan 'teksi terbang' atau seru pandu udara akan mula dilaksanakan dalam tempoh beberapa tahun lagi selepas ekosistemnya lengkap sepenuhnya.

Ketua Pegawai Eksekutif Capital A, Tan Sri Tony Fernandes, berkata ketika ini masih banyak perkara perlu diperhalusi terutamanya mengenai ekosistem dan peraturan trafik udara.

Beliau berkata, teksi terbang bukanlah satu perkara yang sekadar angan-angan tetapi ia akan menjadi kenyataan dalam tempoh terdekat.

"Teksi terbang akan tersedia tidak lama lagi tetapi pada masa ini ia masih belum bersedia sepenuhnya.

"Ini kerana, kita masih tiada perincian mengenai harga tiket, ekosistem dan kerangka lengkap sistem trafik udara," katanya dalam satu temubual bersama Bloomberg TV.

Tony berkata, Capital A melalui cabang perniagaan penerbangannya, AirAsia Aviation Group Limited (AirAsia) bagaimanapun telah melaksanakan beberapa langkah awal seperti tempahan pesawat dan menjalin memorandum persefahaman dengan pelbagai pihak.

Beliau berkata, jika dilaksanakan kelak, 'teksi terbang akan menjadi pasaran yang besar terutamanya kepada Capital A.

Capital A sebelum ini menyatakan akan menjadi syarikat penerbangan pertama di Asia Tenggara menyediakan perkhidmatan 'teksi terbang'.

The group foresees a healthy international travel demand, a continuation from a robust demand in the fourth quarter of 2022 supported by the recent lifting of China’s Zero-Covid policy.

“Cost optimisation remains our key focus as we are committed to building a sustainable business, while providing low fares to our passengers. Further cost reductions and greater network connectivity is expected from the recent joint venture between AirAsia Aviation Group Limited (AAAGL) and Sivilai Asia to establish AirAsia Cambodia,” Capital A said in a filing with Bursa Malaysia.

“The outlook for Asia Digital Engineering (ADE) is promising, boosted by the newly launched hangar in Senai and upcoming 14 new lines in KLIA Aeropolis, which is expected to complete construction by the second half of 2024,” it said.

Additionally, ADE is working towards obtaining approval to expand its scope of service offerings to be able to serve a wider client base, which in the long run will help ADE to achieve a balanced mix of revenue from AirAsia and regional third party airlines.

Meanwhile, three new Airbus A321 freighters are scheduled to be delivered to Teleport in stages starting in the second quarter of 2023, in conjunction with the reopening of China, where trade and e-commerce activities are expected to surge tremendously.

In the fourth quarter ended Capital A returned to the black with a net profit of RM256.2mil against a net loss of RM756.6mil a year ago.

For the quarter under review, its earnings per share stood at 6.20 sen from a loss per share of 19.40.

Its revenue for the quarter surged to RM2.4bil versus RM821mil previously.

(Feb 28): High airfares are here to stay as airlines take advantage of the post-pandemic travel boom to lock in higher charges, Capital A Bhd chief executive officer Tony Fernandes said.

“The fare environment is very good,” Fernandes said in an interview with Bloomberg Television on Tuesday from the sidelines of the Aviation Festival Asia in Singapore. “I think airlines have always underpriced their product. People are getting a little bit of a shock because they see prices a bit higher, but really, we’ve been behind the curve on that as an industry.”

Airlines around the world have pushed up fares as demand outstrips supply, following rapid rebound in travel after years of pandemic-era restrictions and as carriers struggle to get planes back in the sky.

“It’s not high prices, it’s real prices,” Fernandes said. “I think the fares you’re seeing now are really what you should have seen in 2019 as well.”

“After not having travelled for three years, peoples’ value of travel has also gone up,” he added. “If you don’t have it for three years, you see how important it was.”

AirAsia will have its entire fleet of more than 200 planes back in service a year earlier than initially planned, Fernandes said.

“The main obstacle for us has been getting our planes back into service, and bringing 204 planes back is no mean feat,” he said. “And what was initially predicted to be finished by May of next year, we’ll do by May of this year.”
