Agreed..... In stock market anything could happen.... any price level also possible (up & down) someone may say 3.00 but someone will say impossible not but in months or years to come it might be there :-)

If you believe the company then continue invest if not then stop invest and move to other counter of your favorite and preference....

dont care bear or bull. if the economic fundamental of the company have changed it is time to let go. yet some change can be temporary while some might be a sign of fundamental weakness further.

Hi Stock : I cannot agree more with your criteria in investment.

Nevertheless, although I have heavy vested interest in Padini, I would chose to fairly voice out my opinion that our beloved Padini does not score very high mark on these set of criteria. Certainly, this is a very personal centric type of judgment and judgment of each one would be in wide variety.

Let me open my score cards with assumption that I have limited fund and I need to choose ONE only in between Padini and LPI :

1) What kind of Business that you really really would like to own? LPI is A+, Padini is A-.
2) Are you really really comfortable with the Business? : LPI is A+, Padini is B+.
3) Can you sleep well at night and smile yourself to sleep Owning this Business? : LPI is A+, Padini is B+.
4) Do I really really understand its Business? : LPI is A, Padini is A.
5) IS it recession proof? : LPI is B, Padini is C.
6) Consumer Business? : LPI is B-, Padini is B+.
7) Does it have a strong Brand? : LPI is A, Padini is B.

With the above, I conclude Padini does not score very high mark. But it is still a close A company.

Talking about the real "sleep well" investment, I rate LPI as number #1. Since I bought LPI 5 years ago, I seldom look at its share price but only the qtrly report(sometime I also forget about it) and the half yearly dividend(never forget). A share which can comfort you till you do not look at its share price is the share which I classify as the real "sleep well" counter. I cannot find many of this kind of counters?

LPI is a result of luck and the great name of Tan Sri Teh HP.

In fact not many long term counters give me good return. Most of them are much lesser than market return such as CIMB, Gent, GenM.

One of my favorite and the highest weightage in portfolio is Mahsing which ironically is not the favorite counter of most of the forumers and analysts. Total return is 92%. Duration: 40% of capital was invested in 2009 and another 60% in 2012-13.

I am not too sure on Padini and the returns one can get over a 5 year period as i did not study it much. The dividends are good and price is not overly volatile, although and surely like others, it is affected now though, by market sentiment and consumers.

Big caps may move slower but steady. Mine i was lucky to get into Wellcall, CBIP... looking at a 5 year chart will have a better idea how much it has appreciated.

Some of my current bets are MYEG, Ptaras, LTKM

Hi Firebird2 : are you the one who i communicated thru Welcall ?

I have waited Welcall for years. One of the counter which I wait for big correction to collect in big amount is Welcall. Unfortunately, it is so stubborn at its high price. I have no luck to get it. I hate this, as I know its biz very well and I study it for long enough, but the timing (price) is not for me. Sigh !!!

With the very low price on NRL and significant expansion on its capacity, I foresee its earning to grow higher and higher.

bsng, I have also reserved funds to buy in more for Wellcal, but like you say, its stubborn and refuse to ease up on its current price. I am still waiting and my funds are still waiting for it haha.

Yup, i think next year will be even better year for them.

Are you in Padini too?

Firebird2 : Yes, I have invested significant amount into Padini mainly for its high dividend. But if you ask me which one I like more between Welcall and Padini, I would very honestly to say it is Welcall. However, Welcall does not want to marry me but Padini does, so I married with Padini loh. This is life which will not behave exactly in the way you want it to be.

bsng, Padini may be stable soon and i hope it would find itself growing its business like Wellcal. Dont lose sight on Wellcal though, one day, perhaps if market weakens further, it comes begging for you to marry her LOL. Just get ready some dowry in case the marriage have to happen soon. Haha hope situation like this dont happen in marital life, haha, not being able to marry the one you prefer and end up with one you dont prefer.

2 of my criteria are growth prospect and high dividend. In term dividend both are quite equal or maybe Padini is slightly higher, but on growth prospect, Welcall is well ahead judging from its very low cost of raw materials, weakening RM vs USD, capacity expansion, and high demand from customers. On the other hand, Padini is facing high uncertainty on GST, lower margin, higher cost, higher competition from new players and significantly affected spending sentiment due to high inflation. Although I listed few challenges facing Padini, it does not mean Padini cannot get thru with them. Time will tell. The plus point of Padini is that it is selling much cheaper than Welcall.

Stock : I do not wait for -30% to buy more. I bought when it is -10%. I bought Padini at 1.90 and then 1.70. The next entry price would be 1.50. Or maybe today on, I should follow you waiting for -30%.

bsng, glad you have some good reasons to point out in Wellcal as well.
Yup, growth potential is a big criteria for me to buy, as for dividends, some dividends will do for me, in case i have to hold for long,, so something to help me with my margin interest.

I like dividend and I am building a portfolio with high div yield so that I can have passive income each month. Getting old, need to build passive income.

Welcall gives about 5% div yield. Margin interest is 4.8%. You can net in 0.2% plus the high potential growth in its biz and subsequently share price and your capital. Beautiful.

Firebird2

bsng, yes, i bought some time ago and my cost is lower, so i do get more than 5% though. so what i am holding pays for the margin plus some leftover for me, while i wait for the potential to be realized. I am not sure if Wellcal will go below 1.50, so anything below slightly above that means i am ready to buy.
Would Padini make the same cut too? any potential growth that we might be waiting for besides the good dividends ?

Firebird2 : My main reason buying into Padini is for its consistent and high div yield with the fact that its growth rate is relatively lower but steady. I do not expect Padini to demonstrate high growth, thus expecting high capital gain from Padini is unrealistic.

If you are looking for high growth and relatively steady company, how about my favorite Mahsing.
Its CEO has internal goal to grow 20% on sales each year. Its CEO has personal aim to grow big as Cheung Kong(Hong Kong). Its yield is not bad too at 4% on RM2.30. My yield from MahSing is 7%.

bsng, as long as Padini continues to do well, dividends will be consistent. I am sure they are good in what they do, though consumers are spoilt for choices now. Hope they pay higher dividends in the years to come. thx

Hi Stock: if the profit margin is sustained then top and bottom lines will move parallel. My worry is that its margin is shrinking for the last consecutive qtrs. Furthermore the current biz environment is not in favor to grow the margin. The mgt did mention that the company need to let go some margin to grow sales such as bundle sales.

bsngpg

2,842 posts

Posted by bsngpg > 2014-12-04 15:58 | Report Abuse

The latest qtr's net margin is 8.5%, its lowest since Q2 2007.

Latest qtr : rev grows 4.4% while net margin drops 30%.

One qtr does not represent the whole year, nevertheless I wish the mgt work harder and find a way out.

For the 29 qtrs, there was only one qtr with negative growth on revenue which was Q1FY11.

OK, I need to off for today. It is very nice talking to you and Firebird. Bye, good luck.
