If you perceive that this place is filthy and people everywhere are coughing, sneezing and not clean, you wear mask at least that you dont breath the filth. But masks are not cheap and not easily available.so can make your own--whatever style. If people understand that , you need not tell , they will know what to do.

But covid-19 is a pandemic issue. The perception is one of fear of contracting the infection. That we know there were the Tabligh and import clusters and later foreigners. And the foreigners seem to be the unclear factor -not knowing when they are coming or where they are going or hiding. So they can be anywhere like the covid-19. So as a prevention, it is better to wear than not wearing if you are outside your home. This people will understand.

SweetMemoryLane, Mask is effective for protecting others but not the wearer from contracting Covid-19.

Your argument is flawed.

Maybe you forget not everyone has a face mask or can afford one! So for someone without a face mask he/she cannot come out the house to purchase food necessity, right? Unless, everyone is given free face mask and/or could purchase some (if available), than how to make it mandatory? Obviously, if you have face masks do wear them. That's sound advice.

Posted by QuellingBlaster > 2020-05-12 11:52 | Report Abuse

HO ho HO FancyMe DIY your own masks from old or discarded clothing/cloth/fabric.
Recyclable/washable mask made from fabric is almost as good as surgical 3 ply mask for preventing the transmission of infection from a carrier.

That's just a little extra effort to be able to leave home for those who could not afford to buy a mask.

I believe if a 3rd wave hit us, the main contributory factor could be that we did not make the wearing of mask compulsory outside our homes.

Mask is effective for protecting others but not the wearer from Covid-19 as it had been scientifically proven that the coronavirus transmission is through infected droplets emitted from the nostrils and mouth of a carrier. Asymptomatic and pre symptomatic carriers do not know that they are indeed carriers. A mask will limit the throw of droplets from an carrier thus making social distancing meaningful and effective. Any kind of fabric mask is far better than no mask. In fact, a mask from fabric is preferable as it could be reused after washing and drying.

Take a step back Datuk and please reconsider your stance.
Enforce this like how they do in Hong King, Singapore, China and Taiwan.

Make mask wearing outside one's home mandatory in our country and let's fight covid19 together effectively through science.

anyone DIY mask?

Posted by MoneyMaker168 > 2020-05-12 12:12 | Report Abuse

PLEASE WEAR A MASK whenever you go out. This is to protect the others and also yourself. I am not sure who is advising the DG. He is obviously wrong here. The importance of the mask in prevention spread of virus ( droplet spread ) can easily be illustrated, with a slightly crude but effective analogy. Let say if I were to pee on you, and I am not wearing any clothes? Against me peeing on you with my undies on. Or you peeing with yr undies on? Which will give you a full dose? Which will give you a minimal dose of urine? Crude, but effective illustration, I believe. I apologise for being crude. So that you will remember to wear your mask......

Posted by THEREALDEAL > 2020-05-12 12:12 | Report Abuse

Excellent analogy which many here still don't understand.

They think that the mask is for the wearer to protect himself and thus could be made optional.

They also fail to consider that over 80% of those infected have light symptoms (or are even asymptomatic) which go away without treatment like a cold.
However, such carriers are also infectious.

That's why the wearing of mask outside one's home should be made compulsory so that social distancing of 1-2 metres can be meaningful. Otherwise, that distance should be extended 10 fold.

Posted by ChinaDragon > 2020-05-12 12:13 | Report Abuse

The DG is a professional Doctor who knows there is insufficient evidence on the cost / benefits of masks to justify a simplistic regulation. If you have an infection that can be spread by breathing then its a good idea to wear a mask, if you haven't its of no benefit whatsoever and may even cause damage. BMJ researchers notes masks can cause eye irritations which lead to people rubbing pathogens into their eyes; breathing difficulties that can increase the likelihood of contracting illness; they concentrate pathogens to the point where a infectious viral load can build up on the humid mask, and they distract from other more important measures like washing your hands and not touching escalator handrails in busy Malls. But some folk are more interested in virtue signalling than making informed decisions and for those sheeple masks are recommended.

Posted by XxXTripleXxX > 2020-05-12 12:14 | Report Abuse

Gosh chinadragon......The DG now encourages mask use FYI. Your no benefit argument is biased and myopic. While there is no concrete evidence it is beneficial, there is certainly no evidence that it does not work either. So when science fails, we have common sense coming in for the man on the street. And this dictates that the benefits outweigh the risks!

I would rather you not come near me if you are not wearing a mask thank you!

Posted by ChinaDragon > 2020-05-12 12:15 | Report Abuse

XxXTripleXxX ,Face masks are not used nor designed to protect the wearer. but to protect the nearby person from catching an infection from the wearer (like when he/she has a sneeze). Perhaps, if used to protect the wearer, it should be worn inside out. Many Malaysians (maybe also the officers) do not understand the real purpose of wearing the mask- they just follow orders - that is why you can see people "half wearing" them.

Posted by SweetMemoryLane > 2020-05-12 12:16 | Report Abuse

My exact sentiments on why wearing the mask is not made compulsory when we have practiced self isolation, followed diligently the MCO rules and regulations to avoid contact from the virus transmitted through cough/touch/ and from sprays of cough or sneezes.
The government's decision not to make the mask compulsory most likely is an economical one. Should it be compulsory for everyone to wear mask, our nation may have a massive mask shortage and the government cannot afford to give away masks or import/buy more mask to equip the nation for the next few months. The price at RM1.50 is already ludicrously expensive for the average working class Malaysian. Frontliners in hospitals and retail will have to wear new ones daily so overall the cost outweighs its advantage. In the end, sadly its always about the money not the health aspect.

Posted by traderstrades > 2020-05-12 12:17 | Report Abuse

SweetMemoryLane ,It isn't compulsory. If you feel better for it, you can. A business owner may ask his people who seek his custom to do so, and the people who wish to transact should comply.

Even global medical specialists differ in their views on the usage of masks. Fa recognises this difference when she says wearing of masks is compulsory in many, not all countries. Similarly, Sweden didn't want to impose a lockdown, neither did several other counties. Even among those that did, it was at varying levels.

We often criticize politicians for politicizing matters. Sometimes it is us that do the same. Shouldn't the same rule apply?

Posted by ChinaDragon > 2020-05-12 12:18 | Report Abuse

traderstrades ,My thoughts exactly. But it is okay.

For those of us who are worried, just take the extra precautions and do your best to keep yourself/family members/closed ones safe with whatever method you think works best.

For those who think that Covid-19 is a joke or that they are superman/woman, just leave them be. Sorry to sound cold-hearted but whether they get infected or dies, it is not really our concern.

Let them make their own life choices.

Posted by Wellington Sky > 2020-05-12 12:18 | Report Abuse

Yes guyz...I suppose there are reasons for this. If is the intention that wearing the mask is mandatory then it must be the law. In which case we must state exactly what kind of mask is required ? If we do that then there arises the question of availability and affordability. Government should make sure that masks are available and provide them free of charge as many governments are doing. Otherwise poor people will always be in breach of the law.

Okay, enough of the base-economic and “Vladimir Lenin’s Commanding Heights” stuff I just threw into the mix of our discussion on the global-economic-matrix of the impact of Covid-19. We were supposed to talk about this “human sacrifice” the current government is engaging in. By opening up too soon, so that money can be made. So that the workers, legal and illegal, can be called back to work. There are more than two million of them, whose fate we can no longer ascertain. The recent raid on undocumented migrants is bringing us into the idea of what we wish to salvage as a nation. As a country still struggling to forge a better understanding amongst the Malays, Chinese, Indians, Orang Asli, Iban, Kadasan-Dusun, and others that have been here since before and after independence, as legal Malaysians. Then the undocumented migrants arrived. By the hundreds of thousands. The addiction of the owners of the means of production to profit immensely through the system of modern-day slavery. Now we have got a major problem of what to do with them, when our economy had just nose-dived, tanked! Millions of undocumented migrants hoping for jobs. Some 200,000 Rohingya refugees hoping for citizenship. Legal citizens hoping they will still have jobs. Graduates don't have a clue what awaits them. Government still thinking in the pre-Industry 4.0 paradigm. Chaotic thinking must be fixed. Now. Post-Covid-19, each country must take care of her own citizens. The world has changed. Nationalism is back in popular demand. We are all economic beings, tied to the dictates of citizenship. No jobs anymore for undocumented migrants and hopeful refugees. New reality. For Malaysia, having millions of undocumented migrants is not a good policy to develop her economy. Train the locals first. Fix our labour laws to meet the need of social regeneration and the goals of sustainability rather than think of making immense profits entirely. Herein lie the miseducation of the human rights activists, I sense. In conclusion, I am writing this article on the “human sacrifice” on a national scale, poorly planned by the current government. A rush job inviting fatalities. It is May 6. We will know of the casualties of this war by June 6. Perhaps. I hope we will not be another Italy. Or the US. In our haste to make money.

"The economy can wait to recover. Lives lost prematurely can't be your policy!" - well said, Dr Azly but sadly the backdoor PM thinks otherwise. He is fighting for his political life - a gamble with the rakyat's lives, if successful, will help him sit more properly on the toilet bowl!!

"Opening daycare centres is a huge mistake. Child fatality next? Think!" - what a disgrace that even young children's lives are being gambled with.
No, Dr Azly even as I detest the backdoor PM & his pengkhianat nasional govt. I wish them well.
I hope 3 weeks or a month from May 4th will pass with no major spike in covid 19 infections for our country - that we will not be another Italy/Spain.

Written like someone sitting in New Jersey totally out of touch with Malaysia who doesn't care about the devastation caused to other people. A bit like the racist diatribe against the Rohingya that was thankfully taken down by MKINI last week.

Probably happy at home, fully paid salary or steady gig income, treating the lockdown as a two month "staycation"

Did you lose your job? Did your company close down? Were your savings wiped out? Are you a daily-wage earner with no income for two months? Are you looking after a family and children with no money? Are you a foreign worker on the run from the police because you're scared of deportation? Are you elderly locked at home alone? Are you locked in with an abusive partner every day in fear of your safety - your life? Are you OKU alone with no helpers?

This lockdown destroys people's livelihood and peace of mind. The people responsible are basically untouched or even benefit from the lockdown themselves. Arrogant and indifferent to the suffering they are causing - mostly to the poor and undefended.

They cause this devastation and then walk away leaving those most badly harmed to pick up the pieces alone - or stand in line at the pawn shop because they have no food to feed their children.

"Keep the lockdown at all costs" - To take this lazy line of argument is to put no value on people's lives - because it shows no concern about the damage that is caused. This is the real value judgement - reflects very badly on your line of thought.

Azly's piece in a way a reflection of what
we've witnessed the resurgence of outbreaks in US & Japan something many
would doubt if the PN government has
the ammunition enough to battle this
war if it were ever happened one day.

The situation is dead serious in the US. In New York and New Jersey. Dead serious. After the lifting of the lockdown. The Trump-inspired protests are making it worse.

If MEDICARE pay doctors $13K to diagnose covid and pay hospitals $39K to ventilate covid patients the only surprise is how few covid patients there are.

CDC data shows far fewer cases when commodities are removed
