A simple approach to the present bear market (fair value, bargains, value traps)


So the stock market has gone down the last few weeks. You as a value investor is excited, searching for companies to invest for the long term.

Here is a very simple way to look at the businesses that are in the stock market:

1. Those that are fairly valued, even though the prices are lower than before (FAIR prices).
2. Those that are under-valued (BIG bargains at present day prices).
3. Those that are value traps (the values of these companies may go down to zero, therefore these are BAD bargains here; avoid, avoid and avoid.)

Price is NOT value. Price is what you pay, value is what you get.

You are looking to buy GREAT COMPANIES AT FAIR OR BARGAIN PRICES.

You are also looking to buy GOOD COMPANIES AT BIG BARGAIN PRICES.

You should avoid buying GRUESOME COMPANIES AT ANY PRICES (VALUE TRAPS).

Results will be revealed in 10 years.


what is the premis of this comparison?


My thesis: In the long run (10 years), it is better to own a wonderful company at a good price than a good company at a wonderful price. Avoid gruesome company at any price.


Though DLady was trading at high PE, I am confident in the long term (10 years from now), DLady will be a bigger company than today and delivers higher returns.

BEIJING--A private gauge of China's service sector activity rebounded sharply to a nearly ten-year high in May as domestic demand recovered amid government measures to buoy economic growth.

The Caixin China services purchasing managers index rose to 55.0 in May from 44.4 in April, Caixin Media Co. and research firm Markit said Wednesday. The reading stood above the 50 mark that separates expansion from contraction, after it plunged below 50 for three straight months due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The rebound was the steepest since October 2010, as service-providers said an easing of restrictions imposed to control Covid-19 had driven a renewed expansion of activity.

A very simple approach to looking at the 3 financial statements:

1. Income statement

I look at the top line and the bottom line.
The revenues and earnings should be consistent and growing.


2. Balance sheet

I look at the Current Ratio. Is it >2 ? For some industries, it maybe less than 2. Also look at the financial leverage: is it net debt or net cash positive? What is the total debt to equity? (ideally <1)


3. Cash flow

How much of its earnings convert to cash from operations?? (Ideally > 80% or more). How much are the capex? What are the FCFs over the years? Are the FCF trending upwards?



You can do this very quickly with a check list. May just take 5 minutes. If you like the company and understand its business (qualitatively and quantitatively) dig in with more hard work before putting your money into the company's stock.

Risk is always present anywhere in Bursa. Just gotta learn to live with it.

I actually sold some TDM to get into NetX. TDM was about 40, and that time looking like coasting toward 50 then 60. But I just thought, I just have to get some TDM.

At the time I was thinking, okay 'sacrifice' some potential immediate gains in TDM for even greater future gain by NetX.

And you know what actually happened? TDM has reversed back to 30, no thanks to mahathir's big mouth, while NetX has remained rock steady at 2 sen.

Which means that, I would have actually saved some significant paper loss on TDM, had I sold more of it to buy into more NetX.

NetX has been trying a lot of products over the past almost 20 years. Raised money for Payallz..MPEX..GEM... no results so far

calvin will always be calvin. if he does not promote, we wouldn't have known him for his good and his bad. For someone who is so active, he is truly a intellectual idiot and arrogant. If only he is a bit humble, perhaps he can be accorded some respect. Also he is rude in depriving those who participate in this forum from having their posts remaining long term. The deletions just show us his character. Look at the thousands of posts deleted in this thread. Is this forum his grandpa's property? Just asking the obvious.


As much as he likes to portray his smart alec arrogant behaviour, we just have to do our role to highlight the alternative facts. Dismissing others as tunnel vision and stupid or idiotic, with no firm basis, speaks loudly of his integrity.


I am a student of invesring for decades. In humility, I approach investing mindful of the yncertainties and probabilities. The best investor can at time has a humble moment. His protection is to know himself, share honestly and intelligently and generally given the facts (the good and bad) allow others who wish to share to make their individual decision.


Recently cslvin promoted another stock. His side kick lieutenant went of the rampage spamming many threads in i3. Kindly respect this forum There are many people in this forum The most vocal and the most noisy have generally been found to falter badly.

If a big shareholder is selling a lot of shares at 1 sen, what do you think is his intrinsic value for Netx?


Will it be 1.5 sen, 2 sen, 2.5 sen, 3 sen or 8 sen (calvin's target?

Or will it be lower than 1 sen?


Failure to invert and challenge one's own simple thinking can be detrimental.

Let us be kind to calvin too. He is the biggest loser so far in NetX. Having bought from 1 sen to 1.5 sen to 2 sen to 2.5 sen and even perhaps 3 sen. Pity him. We will never know how many houses he has lost so far since he sold his houses to buy into NetX in late last year.

This give raider a good return loh......!!

Although....Padini do not have huge discount on nta....but its dividend yield and PE is still attractive loh....!!
Also Padini is net cash mah.....!!
