bad news impacting AA :(

Covid impact: The collapse in demand for air travel due to the Covid-19 pandemic meant that Lufthansa carried 96% fewer passengers between April and June than a year earlier, leading to an 80% drop in second quarter revenue to €1.9bil. — AFP

BERLIN: Germany’s Lufthansa said it does not expect air travel demand to return to pre-crisis levels before 2024 as a steep drop in revenue pushed it to its worst-ever quarterly operating loss of €1.7bil.

The airline said on Thursday the collapse in demand for air travel due to the Covid-19 pandemic meant it carried 96% fewer passengers between April and June than a year earlier, leading to an 80% drop in second-quarter revenue to €1.9bil.

Despite cost cuts, it posted an adjusted operating loss of €1.7bil compared to €754mil a year earlier - the worst quarterly result in the company’s 67-year history.

“We are experiencing a caesura in global air traffic.

“We do not expect demand to return to pre-crisis levels before 2024, ” chief executive Carsten Spohr said, adding the company would not be spared a “far-reaching restructuring” of its business.

Lufthansa said last month it would cut 20% of its leadership positions and 1,000 administrative jobs as it seeks to repay a €9bil state bailout and navigate deepening losses in the face of the coronavirus pandemic.

The company, which had 129,400 employees as of the end of June, said forced redundancies can no longer be ruled out in Germany due to the development of the market and the course of negotiations with unions.

Lufthansa said it plans to increase short and medium-haul capacity to around 40% of the prior-year period in the third quarter and to around 20% of capacity on long-haul routes.

In the fourth quarter, it expects short- and medium-haul capacity to rise to 55% and to 50% on long-haul routes.

Rival Air France-KLM, which also secured state-backed aid, aims to operate at two thirds of capacity before the end of the year.

The company said it expects to post an adjusted operating loss in the second half of 2020 and a further significant decline in adjusted operating profit for the full-year due to very limited operation of important long-haul routes. — Reuters

bad news today caused AA to lose momentum today :(

DUBAI: Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Airways reported yesterday a US$758mil loss in the first half.

This came on passenger traffic falling by nearly 60% due to the coronavirus crisis.

The airline carried 3.5 million passengers in the six months to June 30 compared to 8.2 million in the same period a year ago, it said in a statement.

Etihad has been gradually resuming regular, scheduled passenger services since June after it suspended those flights in March. — Reuters

berani? :)

Friday, 7 August 2020

What is the difference between investing and speculation?

Benjamin Graham addressed the differences between them on the very first page of his book, The Intelligent Investor.

Graham wrote, "An investment operation is one which, upon thorough analysis, promises safety of principal and an adequate return."

Based on this definition, there are three components to investing:

thorough analysis,

safety of principal, and

adequate return.

Graham added, "Operations not meeting these requirements are speculative."

To this, we can add:

(1)  Any contemplated holding period shorter than a normal business cycle (typically 3 to 5 years) is speculation, and

(2) any purchase based on anticipated market movements or forecasting is also speculation.

Value investing meets Graham's definition of investing, addressing on:  its focus on individual company analysis to determine intrinsic value,  the margin of safety concept, and its success over the long term.

The distinction between investing and speculation is important for a reason Graham cited in 1949 and remains true today:  "... in the easy language of Wall Street, everyone who buys or sells a security has become n investor regardless of what he buys, or for what purpose, or at what price...."

The financial media often refers to "investors" taking profits, bargain hunting, or driving prices higher or lower on a particular day.  However, these actions are rightly attributed to speculators, not investors.

Investors and speculators approach their tasks differently.

Investors want to know what a business is worth and imagine themselves as owning the business as a whole. Unlike speculators, investors maintain a long-term perspective—at least 3 to 5 years. They look at a company from the perspective of owners. This means they’re interested in factors such as corporate governance, structure, and succession issues that may affect a company’s future and its ability to create wealth for years to come. Investors may use their voting rights to assist in enhancing company value over the long term.

Speculators, on the other hand, are less interested in what a business is actually worth and more concerned with what a third party will pay to own shares on a given day. They may be concerned only with short-term changes in a stock’s price, not in the underlying value
of the company itself.

The problem with speculation is simple:

Who can predict what a third party will pay for your shares today, tomorrow, or any day?

Stock market prices typically swing between extremes, stoked by the irrational emotions of fear and greed.

Focus on the long term business value

Such dramatic price fluctuation on a day-to-day basis can test long-term investors’ mettle in maintaining their focus on business value.

Remember, the tendency is for business values day-to-day to remain relatively stable.

Day-to-day price changes should hold little interest for the long-term investor, unless a price has fallen to the “buying level” that represents a sizable margin of safety.

But that’s often difficult to remember when newspaper headlines, TV news anchors, friends, and coworkers are lamenting or lauding the market’s most recent lurch forward or back.

AirAsia Group Bhd, Asia’s leading low cost carrier (LCC), has secured financing to the tune of RM1bil that will give it the much needed cash flow to survive the turbulent times of the industry.

Sources say a consortium of local banks has put together the financing package that the LCC can withdraw over time. It will now seek a guarantee from Danajamin for 80% of the loan. Drawdown on the loan is contingent upon AirAsia flying to international destinations. The hope is that travel bubbles will be initiated in stages to destinations in Asia, with Singapore set to be the first stop.

“The money should be enough for now for AirAsia to tide over the turbulent times that the airline industry is going through due to the Coronavirus pandemic. It is also the first major loan that is being disbursed via the Danajamin loan guarantee scheme, ” says a source.

AirAsia is the leading LCC in Asia with its reach stretching up to China. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it was forced to shut down the operations for almost a month in April. The LCC resumed operations in May by flying mainly domestic routes. Passenger bookings, flight frequencies and load factors are gradually improving

Cargo operations are said to be enjoying robust business and load factors are up to 70% but without travel being opened to international destinations, AirAsia will not be able to make a profit by just relying on domestic routes.

According to the latest set of results, AirAsia swung in the red in the first quarter to the tune of RM803.85mil. For the first time in many years, the LCC recorded a negative earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA).

AirAsia’s EBITDA was in deficit of RM28.5mil compared to a healthy RM525.6mil in the corresponding period a year ago. The biggest expense items are staff cost, fuel cost and maintenance and overhaul cost.

AirAsia still has RM1.6bil in its kitty to run its operations. However it would not be enough to see through the operations in the difficult times and the RM1bil cash injection is expected to help it through next year.

“The RM1bil in financing is what the major shareholders of AirAsia were looking for to tide over the tough times. It should be sufficient for now, ” says a source.

Airlines in Asia have resumed flying and in an interview last month, he said the airline is confident its business will continue to survive, given the efforts already undertaken to raise cash and to cut costs, more importantly to see its cash expenses drop by 50% this year.

With revenue now up and costs being cut, the airline’s cash burn rate will lessen and it is also seeing major improvements in its digital businesses that has seen big jumps in activity since the MCO.

“Our logistics model through Teleport is doing really good. We have permission now to use our passenger planes to carry cargo, which means we are operating almost 60% as a freighter. That is a growing business and we are now trying to look at land logistics to supplement our air logistics and no one can match our network. Teleport is very valuable, he said in the interview.

“We have built a nice e-commerce and food platform business. The thesis of our digital business is that you convert your big database into other products. It is predicated by Big Points, which is now the largest Asean points provider.

“Our digital is split into travel and we are now doing a massive deal with a massive airline and that is going to prove the thesis. It is a global brand and they want to be on AirAsia’s platform to sell their products. Because of Covid, we will catch up with Expedia and the other brands in terms of hotel supply.

“What we built in three months we could never do in normal time. We had three months of doing nothing and that enabled us to rethink our whole digital strategy and build it up and really focus on it. What would have been done in 18 months was done in three months. We didn’t waste the time, ” he said.

For a start, AirAsia will launch daily flights between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, and one weekly flight each between Singapore and Penang, Kota Kinabalu, Kuching and Ipoh.

These flights were scheduled for the week of Aug 17 subject to further announcements by the governments, it said.

AirAsia said it welcomed the decision by the Malaysian and Singapore governments to open up cross-border travel for essential business and official purposes between both countries through the RGL scheme.

The RGL scheme requires eligible travellers to abide by the prevailing Covid-19 prevention and public health measures mutually agreed on by both countries, which include undergoing polymerase chain reaction (PCR) swab tests.

AirAsia Group chief executive officer Tan Sri Tony Fernandes said the airline was thoroughly committed towards resuming air connectivity and thus reviving economic activities in the region.

"The RGL might only be the first step but certainly is most important as both countries start to revive the economy,” he said. - Bernama
