Education Ministry releases amended 2020 school academic calendar

PETALING JAYA: The mid-semester and year-end school holidays have been shortened.

The Education Ministry said the mid-semester school holidays for Semester Two will now be from Aug 20 to 28 while the year-end school holidays will be from Dec 18 to 31, depending on the state.

This is a four-day reduction for the mid-semester break from nine days to five days.

The year-end holidays for schools in Johor, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu have been reduced from 42 days to 14 days, while schools in Melaka, Negri Sembilan, Pahang, Perak, Perlis, Penang, Sabah,

Sarawak, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya will have a 13-day holiday, the ministry said in a statement on Tuesday (June 23).

“The ministry amended the 2020 School Academic Calendar to assist schools in planning the students' teaching and learning process, ” it said.

The total number of physically being in school days is now 168 for all schools, it added.

Form Five and Form Six students spent at least 55 days learning from home throughout the movement control order (MCO), conditional MCO and recovery MCO period, it continued.

As for the other school students, the ministry said the total number of days spent learning from home will depend on when they will return to school.

The date has yet to be announced.

The ministry have to take into consideration that the teachers still taught the students during MCO. It did not make sense to shorten the holiday.

Posted by XmenOrigin > 2020-06-24 09:46 | Report Abuse

ChineseKungFuMaster ,the teacher need to take into consideration during school holiday they still take the salary, school holiday mean for student not for teacher but after long time teacher take for granted school holiday become teacher holiday.

Reality check!
Teachers in the government sector are safe where their jobs are concerned!
Life however is dismal in the private sector. So many have lost their jobs are taking massive pay cuts some even having their salaries halved! They are forced to take unpaid leave and thus get a drastic reduction in their pay.
Yet teachers complain.Nobody asked for this. Ultimately let’s think of the students future...the nation builders of tomorrow.

HO ho HO Unprecedented times comes with unprecedented measures. All the best, lets groom our future leaders, dear educators. Start working!

Posted by WellingtonSky > 2020-06-24 10:19 | Report Abuse

I'd like to believe that these complains do not come from the teachers themselves. If frontliners who worked all throughout MCO risking even their own lives and neglecting their own children, who are we to complain when we are asked to work a few more days to help our students catch up on their studies. Not all students were able to follow online lessons during MCO. Also the number of hours of online lessons were so limited, it is nothing like being in the presence of yr teachers from 8am - 1pm. Thk God teachers still keep their jobs, are paid their salaries and will receive their pensions. There is no better place to be a teacher than in Malaysia.

Posted by QueenElizebeth IV > 2020-06-24 10:19 | Report Abuse

Hahaha they are many teachers not even carrying out their duties during MCO. Simply handed out the exercises, not even conducting the online classes. Most of our educators are hopeless.

Teachers should think of the welfare of their students. How about the homework loads and the exams the students have to face. The fear that they are not able to cope up which lead them to stress.

The new school calendar won't work at some school, and at all schools in flood stricken areas in november - december. Unless KPM want us to wade thru the water please provide them ferry speedboat and jetsky each.

Posted by MoneyMaker168 > 2020-06-24 10:22 | Report Abuse

yeah i agree. Some schools are even used as relieve centres during flood period.

Posted by ChinaDragon > 2020-06-24 10:22 | Report Abuse

I have seen the struggle that teachers went through during MCO. This is not about teachers opposing the school term schedule, It is about neglecting teachers before taking the decision and previously on April education minister informed that the school term is unchanged despite the MCO holiday(which is something that teachers never asked for). During MCO period teachers are asked to provide worksheets in online platform, as many of the students doesn't have accessibility to google classroom , teachers have to come up with other alternative to ensure that the T&L is ongoing. Teachers need to do lesson plan and submit it to administrator during MCO. Teachers were asked to work from home. Despite all the hardmanship that teachers went through during this MCO period, what really upset the teachers are the work that they done during the MCO period is not counted. Btw school starts at 7.30am and ends at 1.45 pm (teachers are required to be at school before 7.00 am) and its not 8am-1pm work. We shall and should remember that teachers are the unsung frontliners who are not appreciated by many although they have done their best work during this MCO.

ChinaDragon, agreed your point of view but during the MCO period, did the teachers have their salary cut or reduced as compared to the the private sector? Thanks

Posted by Zillionaire > 2020-06-24 10:24 | Report Abuse

Yeah chinadragon... extreme circumstances require extreme measures. Some have been working even more during MCO, some lost their jobs. But of course, any comments on improvement should be taken into account.

Just to say, many lost their jobs and got pay cut. Do you want it to happen to you? Government servant are very much lucky compared to others... You can't be complaining since education needs to be back on right track to catch the learning time lost during MCO... This is precedented situation to all. Nobody wants it anyway. I dislike the MCO too.. Even bankers, police, doctors, nurses, militaries work as usual during the pandemic. So stop complaining... Always look at the bright side of the road. Think positive, OK!

Posted by LOVE IS IN THE AIR..... > 2020-06-24 10:26 | Report Abuse

Teachers also need a break. Same with children also need a break. During CMO teachers and children also do online studies. Please don't add on more stress to them.

Posted by FantasticBeast > 2020-06-24 10:26 | Report Abuse

Everyone had enough of sleep during mco. Now back to action.
