https://www.theedgemarkets.com/article/tata-sons-plans-quit-airasia-india-venture

NEW DELHI (July 13): Tata Sons plans to quit its budget airline venture with AirAsia Bhd as the Covid-19 pandemic batters the aviation business, according to an Indian media report on Monday.

Malaysia's AirAsia Bhd owns 49% of AirAsia India, the maximum foreign ownership allowed in an Indian airline, while the remainder is held by Tata Sons.

"Tata is not very keen on staying invested in AirAsia India. AirAsia's Malaysian partner has approached Tata Sons to sell its 49% but Tata has not accepted the offer.

“In fact, the plan — which is at a preliminary stage — is to exit its holding in AirAsia India and focus more on Vistara," Livemint.com reported, citing sources.

Vistara is another one of Tata Group’s airline venture, launched in partnership with Singapore Airlines.

An AirAsia India spokesperson declined to comment when contacted by Bernama.

The airline, which began operating in June 2014, had talked about its plans to launch international services as well as a stock market listing before the pandemic sent the global airline industry into a tailspin.

It has more than two dozen aircraft and a network of 21 destinations in India.

@Mabel Thanks for your detailed explanation. However, Yeo and Jack have highlighted the pressing challenges facing AA and it certainly is a storm.

It seems, TF had taken precautionary step by declaring about 90% dividend declaration. By adding past dividends, it should have made him net winner, as a shareholder.

He sure did...

Fortunately, he did shared his winning as I too managed to enjoy the RM (0.90 + 0.12+0.40+0.12) dividend from this Airlines..I remember many were cheering those days..what a great Airlines AA was...

According to the "50 Airlines" annual report recently released by Brand Finance, AirAsia is among the 30 airlines globally capable of weathering the 2019 coronavirus epidemic crisis; this report is the most valuable and has the most Companies with strong brand strength.

Samir, managing director of the consultancy Asia Pacific, said: "Only a few brands can grow in value, and AirAsia can definitely compete with the world's best aviation brands."

At the same time, he believes this is due to AirAsia's efforts in brand building.

AirAsia is the only low-cost airline on ASEAN's list. Its brand value has increased by 15.5% year-on-year, the highest increase in Asia, and it ranks second even in the world.

Therefore, AirAsia can overcome the difficulties. Just as an airline in South Korea faced the crisis, it can also turn into a profit and become an excellent airline! The stock price of that Airlines has also risen!

AA is operating in 25 countries, mainly with international flights, but also with local offshoots such as AirAsia Indonesia, Thai AirAsia, AirAsia India or Philippines AirAsia.

Indian operation makes only 8% of the total revenue and has been lost making from day 1..It's OK if Tata want to Tango with Singapore Airlines...

AAGB still have AA Malaysia with 61 % revenue, Indonesia 30%, Philippines 22%

AA are ready for a post-Covid-19 digital world

● Travel has changed, and so have we
● We are more than an airline. We are a digital travel & lifestyle company
● Group reorganisation completed in 2019. Two pillars: airline & RedBeat Ventures.
● Leveraging our extensive reach on AirAsia.com and its low customer acquisition cost

Leaner airline operations

● Leaner and tighter ship with headcount rationalisation.
● Cash is king. Reduced fixed cost burn by 60% for 2Q20. Variable cost negligible.
● Restructured major portion of fuel hedging contracts
● Capital:
Malaysia : Prihatin Economic Stimulus Package (ESP) close to closing
Other forms of capital raising being explored
Philippines : Bank financing
Indonesia : Bank financing
Thailand : Bank financing & government support
● Airports have been supportive. Relationship with airports have improved especially with MAHB. All requests positively looked at.
● Sale leaseback of airplanes benefitting us today. Leasing gives more flexibility to scale back operations & renegotiate terms. No need to impair asset value due to aircraft grounding.

Extensive cost reduction exercise in 2020 & 2021

In 2Q20, 60% of fixed costs have been reduced. For FY20, AAGB hopes to halve cash expenses YoY. Here are some of action which is under progress

1. AAGB targets to reduce CASK from 3.80 US cents in FY19 to 3.60-3.70 US cents by FY21.
2. As at 6 Jul 2020, 70% of its Brent fuel hedging contracts have been restructured. The FY20 average Brent hedge price is USD61.41/bbl.
3. AAGB expects to record more losses on settlement of fuel hedges in 2Q20 but does not expect to record as much in 3Q20 and 4Q20.
4 Other measure to preserve liquidity in FY20 are to:-
a) Defer operating lease and maintenance payments - AAGB may return 38 aircraft in the next 3 years. It is also exploring lease rates based on utilisation rather than a fixed lease rate per month or year.
b) Get customers to accept credit shells instead of cash refunds – 80% of customers have opted for credit shells.
c) Delay taking delivery of new aircraft – In fact, AAGB is cajoling Airbus to refund some of its aircraft purchase deposits.
d) Rollover working capital loans
e) Review pilots’ allowances
f) Institute pay cuts across the board including that of directors
g) Seek debt, equity and hybrid financing
f) Encourage associates to seek their own financing
g) Get fuel vendors to refund prepayments
h) Renegotiate IT and maintenance contracts

Money and job worries pose real risk to global recovery

TheStar Tue, Jul 14, 2020 07:30am - 20 minutes ago

A new YouGov survey across 26 countries showed consumers everywhere are concerned about their jobs and household budgets. They’re also cautious about spending or investing the money they do have.

LONDON: The coronavirus pandemic is throwing the world into financial insecurity, posing a threat to the recession-hit global economy if it means consumers keep saving rather than spending.

A new YouGov survey across 26 countries showed consumers everywhere are concerned about their jobs and household budgets.

They’re also cautious about spending or investing the money they do have.

It suggests that signs of a rebound in some measures of activity – cited by a number of policy makers as reason for optimism – will take time to get people back in shops, airports or restaurants.

Job security is a major concern for many, with more than 30% feeling less secure in their job than a month ago.

Around half of the respondents were still cutting back on non-essential expenditure.
