KUALA LUMPUR (July 20): Malaysia’s economy may be severely impacted if the movement control order (MCO) is re-imposed, says Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

The premier noted that the country’s daily Covid-19 infections have risen to double-digit levels over the last few days, with 13 new clusters discovered throughout the current recovery MCO (RMCO) period, which began on June 10.

“If there is a spike in new Covid-19 cases, this will prompt the government to reimplement the MCO, (which in turn will have a) massive impact on our economy. The closing of economic sectors can cause the country to lose at least RM2 billion per day and millions of workers to lose their income sources,” he said in a live televised speech today.

“All the government and non-governmental organisations’ efforts under the Penjana and Prihatin [stimulus] packages to revive the economy will go to waste. The Prihatin package is expected to contribute over 3% to the country’s GDP (gross domestic product) this year,” he added.

HONG KONG: Hong Kong carrier Cathay Pacific issued a profit warning on Friday, estimating it will suffer a historic loss of HK$9.9 billion (US$1.3 billion) in the first half of 2020 as it reels from the coronavirus pandemic.

"The Group will record a net loss attributable to shareholders of approximately HK$9.9 billion, which compares to a net profit to shareholders of HK$1.3 billion for the same period in 2019," the airline said in a statement.

Like airlines worldwide, Cathay has been battered by the evaporation of global travel during the pandemic.

In Friday's statement, Cathay said June passenger numbers were down 99.1 per cent year on year.

"The landscape of international aviation remains incredibly uncertain with border restrictions and quarantine measures still in place across the globe," chief customer and commercial officer Ronald Lam said in the statement.

He added there was a slight increase in the number of transit passengers following the easing of restrictions at Hong Kong's airport but they are "yet to see any significant signs of immediate improvement."

Hong Kong's government came to the rescue of Cathay earlier this year with a HK$39-billion (US$5 billion) recapitalisation plan.

Cathay chairman Patrick Healy had described the bailout as the only way to save the airline from collapse.

Shareholders approved the plan on Monday.

Under the proposal, Cathay will raise about HK$11.7 billion in a rights issue on the basis of seven rights shares for every 11 existing shares held, while preference shares will be sold to the government via Aviation 2020 for HK$19.5 billion and warrants for HK$1.95 billion, subject to adjustment.

Aviation 2020 will also be allowed to send two "observers" to attend board meetings.

Retail investors, known locally as ants, were a force in a 50% stock-price surge after a virus-induced sell-off in March.

SEOUL: Day traders seeking help for gambling addiction have tripled in number in South Korea, as COVID-19 social distancing and working-from-home has freed up more time for online stock market trading, data showed.

Retail investors, known locally as ants, were a force in a 50% stock-price surge after a virus-induced sell-off in March.

From then through May, however, those seeking help for trading-related addictive behaviour reached 214, showed data from the Korea Center on Gambling Problems. The growth rate eclipsed the overall 16% rise in calls seeking help.

The trend is a worrying sign of things to come should social distancing practices such as work-from-home become the norm, experts said, as isolated individuals have even fewer mechanisms such as peer support to check addictive behaviour.

Compulsive stock trading also lacks the social stigma that may act as a deterrent toward traditional forms of gambling, even though the stimulation behind both is similar, they said.

South Korea has not enforced any virus-busting lockdown measures, even during the height of the outbreak in the country over February and March. Nevertheless, people and businesses by and large have followed government guidelines and refrained from social gatherings and instituted work-from-home arrangements.

One such individual was 35-year-old bank employee surnamed Lee. He has been trading shares online for over a year since hearing of a friend who made a windfall through frequently buying and selling stocks based on rumour and speculation.

Though Lee has seen some success - once making a profit of several hundred thousand dollars in a single trade - increased trading time afforded by working-from-home culminated last month in him losing 1.2 billion won ($1 million) over five days.

On the insistence of his wife, he said, he subsequently sought help from a gambling addiction counsellor.

"We tend to see an influx of people seeking help after a huge market dive," said Kim Yeon-su, treatment manager at the Korea Center on Gambling Problems help centre in Seoul. "It happened with Bitcoin and now it's happening with stocks."

Active trading accounts - the bulk of which belong to retail investors - rose 2.8 million from mid-January through mid-July, versus 1.6 million in the same period last year, financial association data showed.

The surge was reflected in the July listing of SK Biopharmaceuticals Co Ltd, where each share on offer for retail investors attracted 323 prospective buyers whose down-payments totalled 31 trillion won. The successful buyers saw their investment more than quintuple in four days.

Investor message boards on South Korea's dominant internet search portal see high traffic throughout trading hours with posts such as,"I want to become a king ant" and "I was robbed today as usual", plus discussion of obscure stocks and preferred shares.

Mental health experts said trading can become high-stakes gambling, with little to hold back the trader when they can trade easily online at home and often on credit.

"Some of these people are buying, selling, buying, selling... To become a gambler, you need immediate stimulation to the brain. Invest in stable things, wait three months - they don't do this," said psychiatrist Shin Young-chul at the Kangbuk Samsung Hospital.

"For a person for whom 400 million won goes back and forth in a day, can they stay engaged in their job that earns 2 million won a month?" - Reuters

In a statement, AirAsia head of commercial Amanda Woo said a market survey conducted has shown an increasing number of people who wished to travel as soon as the situation improved and flight searches on its website have increased by more than 150% since the recovery movement control order phase

KUALA LUMPUR: AirAsia Group Bhdhas launched a special promotion of 50% discount on the returning fare when customers booked a round trip ticket applicable for any Malaysian domestic flights between July 20 to July 24 for the travel period between Aug 4 to Dec 6 this year.

In a statement, AirAsia head of commercial Amanda Woo said a market survey conducted has shown an increasing number of people who wished to travel as soon as the situation improved and flight searches on its website have increased by more than 150% since the recovery movement control order phase.

“We are increasing our domestic flight frequencies to cater to stronger market demand. In August, we have scheduled 30% more flight frequencies as compared to July, amounting to more than 600 weekly flights across 16 destinations within Malaysia.

“Of these, 70% are flights between peninsula and east Malaysia, with Kota Kinabalu, Kuching and Tawau among the top destinations. We will continue to ramp up our capacity and introduce more exciting offers so everyone can fly affordably, ” she said.

She also said customers could enjoy even bigger savings and greater convenience when they book a flight with hotel combo on SNAP with return flight fares and three days, two nights hotel stay available from as low as RM249 per person from Kuala Lumpur to Penang.

AirAsia provides enhanced flexibility as guests travelling up to Dec 31,2020 may change their flight dates conveniently at any time with no flight-change fee.

“AirAsia assures that the health and wellbeing of our passengers are always our paramount concern besides complying with the advice and regulations from government and health authorities.

“AirAsia has also implemented end-to-end contactless procedures and a series of new safety measures, as well as taking care of those most at risk to ensure the safety of all travelling guests, ” she said. — Bernama
