second and third wave can flare up anytime in the major market for AA, and all the SOP and cost cutting would go down the drain as the route shutdown again.

BEIJING: A coronavirus vaccine candidate developed by China National Pharmaceutical Group (Sinopharm) could be ready for public use by the end of this year, state media reported on Wednesday, ahead of a previous expectation it may become available in 2021.

Sinopharm Chairman Liu Jingzhen told state broadcaster CCTV the company expects to finish late-stage human testing within about three months.

Sinopharm's unit China National Biotec Group (CNBG), which is responsible for two coronavirus vaccine projects, said in June the shot may not be ready until at least 2021 as a lack of new infections in China made it difficult to find people to test it on.

But China has since found alternative trial sites abroad, overcoming some of the obstacles it faces in the global race to produce a vaccine to fight a pandemic that has killed over 600,000 people globally.

READ: China's Sinopharm begins late stage trial of COVID-19 vaccine in Abu Dhabi
Sinopharm's experimental shot has entered a Phase III trial involving around 15,000 participants and two vaccine strains in the United Arab Emirates.

Another potential vaccine, developed by Chinese firm Sinovac Biotech using a similar technology, has also been given to participants in a Phase III trial in Brazil.

A vaccine candidate developed by CanSino Biologics and China's military research unit, which appears to be safe and induced immune responses in most subjects in a closely-watched mid-stage study, is also looking for opportunities to run a Phase III trial outside China.

Aiyoo guys please be rational. Even vaccine is available by Sept or Dec 2020, it takes another 6-12 months to produce, distribute and vaccine at least 5 billions of people. Do you think its easy ah?

Airasia will be likely to recover by 2022 or 2023. No chance at all by next year.

If you want to buy now you can but hold it until 2022/3.

A handful of travel-starved Taiwanese recently boarded a plane at Taipei International Airport that never took off.

The flight to nowhere gave passengers an opportunity to dream about vacationing abroad but it was also emblematic of the challenges facing aviation and jet fuel suppliers.

With air travel not expected to return to pre-virus levels until 2023 at the earliest, refiners are caught in a balancing act as they juggle the uneven fuel recovery and what to do about excess jet fuel output.

While they can produce more products such as gasoline and diesel, they also face the prospect of adding to gluts, especially with the pandemic raging unabated in many regions.

While jet fuel typically accounts for a fraction of a processed barrel of crude, refiners have a number of options to reduce that further. Processors can split kerosene -- the raw ingredient for aviation fuel -- into lighter streams to make products such as gasoline or heavier streams for diesel.

"This is the easiest way to reduce jet," said Kendrick Wee, associate director of global refining and marketing for energy consultant IHS Markit, adding that most refiners would probably favor blending kerosene into diesel given the strong margins.

Processors could also cut run rates or switch their feedstock from crude to straight-run fuel oil, which produces less lighter fuel, he said.

Diesel and gasoline will lead the recovery in demand, with consumption returning to 2019 levels next year, but jet fuel is unlikely to get there until at least 2023, according to a note from Goldman Sachs Group Inc. earlier this month.

While refiners are generating small profits from producing aviation fuel again after making losses through parts of April and May, average margins are about 86 per cent lower this month from January before the virus hit.

Many Asian operators are opting for higher diesel output.

At least two South Korean processors are producing more of the industrial fuel by blending in excess jet fuel, according to traders who supply and buy oil for the refiners who asked not to be named as they're not authorised to speak to the media.

However, with margins improving, jet fuel yields are starting to expand slightly, a refinery official said separately.

Indian Oil Corp, the nation's biggest refiner, is monitoring diesel demand domestically and overseas to decide how much more of the industrial fuel to produce, according to a spokesman.

The company has significant flexibility to convert jet fuel to other products and is reluctant to cut run rates.

"Indian refiners have been able to make substantial shifts in yields away from jet fuel," said Senthil Kumaran, an oil markets consultant at FGE. Yields hit a record low of 3.6 per cent in May, about half the usual average, he said.

Taiwan's Formosa Petrochemical Corp lowered its jet fuel yield to around 5.0 per cent from its usual 8.0-12.0 per cent, and intends to keep it that way for the rest of the year, according to spokesperson Lin Keh-Yen.

Meanwhile, Japan's biggest refiner, ENEOS Holdings Inc, reduced output of the aviation fuel by half due to weak demand, its chairman said Friday.

AirAsia Indonesia is offering drive-through rapid COVID-19 testing for passengers leaving from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Banten.

The service is provided daily from 4 a.m. to 8 p.m. for Rp 95.000 (US$6.51) at Soewarna Business Park located at the airport.

To use the service, passengers are required to show their booking ID and identity card. After registering and completing payment, a sample will be taken and passengers are to wait 10 to 15 minutes for the result.

The rapid test results and medical certificate will be valid for 14 days.

In a statement, AirAsia Indonesia director Veranita Yosephine said, “The service will be expanded to Indonesian cities that AirAsia currently serves.”

The airline has gradually resumed its operations and is now serving domestic routes from Jakarta to Medan, Surabaya, Bali, Lombok and Yogyakarta.

Earlier this month, AirAsia Indonesia updated its baggage policy and announced that passengers could bring two carry-on bags with certain requirements.

The total maximum weight for both bags should be 7 kilograms, otherwise they will be placed with checked baggage.

AirAsia Indonesia provides a free baggage allowance of up to 15 kg for domestic flights. (wng)
